Now, therefore, O best of the twice-born, I shall fully expound the rāja-yogas — by the mere knowing of which a person becomes honoured by kings.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 1
Śloka 2

From the kārakāṁśa, or else from the janma-lagna, O twice-born, one should consider — carefully — the two pairs of clearly determined grahas that bring about rāja-yoga.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 3
Śloka 4
One yoga is to be reckoned from the ātmakāraka and the putrakāraka; and likewise (a second) from the lords of the tanu-bhāva and the pañcama-bhāva, O best of the twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 4
Śloka 5
According to the mutual relation of the lords of the 1st and 5th, and of the ātmakāraka and putrakāraka, and according to their strength, this yoga is always full, half, or a quarter.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 5
Śloka 6-7
When the lord of the lagna stands in the 5th bhāva and the lord of the 5th in the lagna; and when the two kārakas named ātmaja (putrakāraka) and ātman (ātmakāraka) are in the 1st or the 5th bhāva, in their own rāśi, their own aṁśa, or their exaltation sign, and are aspected by benefics — that is the yoga called Mahārāja; one born in it is renowned and happy.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 6-7
Śloka 8
The kāraka (ātmakāraka) and the lord of the 9th, placed in the sign of the 1st, the 5th, or the 7th, and aspected by or joined with benefic grahas, are held to bestow royal enjoyment.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 8
Śloka 9
If, counted from the kāraka or from the lord of the lagna, the 2nd, the 5th, or the 4th is occupied by benefic grahas, the child becomes a king — there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 9
Śloka 10
If, counted from those (the kāraka and the lagna-lord), the 3rd and the 6th are aspected by or joined with cruel grahas, the native is a king; if they are mixed (benefic and malefic together), he is born possessed of wealth.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 10
Śloka 11
If Śukra stands in the svāṁśa (kārakāṁśa), or in the 5th from it, aspected by or joined with Jupiter and the Moon; or likewise if he stands in the lagna or in the lagna-pada — the man becomes one of the royal class.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 11
Śloka 12
If the janma-lagna, or the horā-lagna, or the kalā-lagna is aspected by some one single graha, whichever it may be — in these three yogas he is a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 12
Śloka 13
When the ṣaḍvarga of the lagna is aspected by or joined with a single graha, rāja-yoga is certain for men; the fruit is in proportion to the aspect.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 13
Śloka 14
By a full aspect, a full yoga; by a half aspect, half of it; by a quarter aspect, a quarter yoga — so the wise should understand it, in order.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 14
Śloka 15
If a graha standing in its own rāśi or in exaltation occupies the three lagnas, he becomes a king; and likewise if such a graha occupies the lagna, its aṁśa, or its dreṣkāṇa.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 15

When the pada is joined with the Moon and with benefic grahas, while Jupiter occupies the 2nd, and it is aspected by a graha standing in its own exaltation — rāja-yoga beyond doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 16
Śloka 17
A benefic in the lagna, a benefic in the 2nd, a malefic graha in the 3rd, and a benefic in the 4th — he is a king, or the equal of a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 17
Śloka 18
The Moon, or Jupiter, or Venus, or a strong Budha — placed in its own exaltation and occupying the 2nd house — bestows prosperity upon the embodied one.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 18
Śloka 19
Grahas standing in debilitation in the 6th, the 8th, or the 3rd; and the lord of the lagna, in its own rāśi or in exaltation, aspecting the lagna — this produces rāja-yoga.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 19
Śloka 20
The lords of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th being combust, or standing in debilitation or in an enemy's sign; and the lord of the lagna, in its own rāśi or its own exaltation, aspecting the lagna — this gives kingdom.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 20
Śloka 21
The lord of the 10th, standing in its own rāśi or in exaltation and aspecting the lagna, gives kingdom; and benefic grahas placed in kendras assuredly bestow kingdom as well.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 21
Śloka 22
The kāraka in a benefic rāśi, or in a benefic aṁśa, is a giver of wealth; and when a benefic occupies a kendra reckoned from that aṁśa, he is born a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 22

Śloka 24
If a graha in its own exaltation aspects two, or indeed all three, of the bhāva-lagna, the horā-lagna and the kalā-lagna, it is a bestower of rāja-yoga.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 24
Śloka 25
From the rāśi, the dreṣkāṇa and the aṁśa; or from the rāśi and the aṁśa; or else from the rāśi and the dreṣkāṇa — a graha that aspects the lagna is a giver of the yoga.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 25
Śloka 26-27
When a benefic graha occupies the ārūḍha — and especially when it is occupied by the Moon, or occupied by Jupiter and Venus, or by any exalted graha — then, in the absence of grahas causing evil argala, rāja-yoga is certain. Likewise when the Moon is in that benefic ārūḍha and Jupiter is in the 2nd from it.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 26-27
Śloka 28
The lords of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th, standing in debilitation and aspecting the lagna, become producers of rāja-yoga for men — there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 28
Śloka 29-30
When the lagna sign is aspected by the lords of the 4th, the 10th, the 2nd and the 11th, and the pada is joined with benefic grahas, and the 11th from the pada is aspected by Venus — the one born is a king, or the equal of a king; there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 29-30
Śloka 30-31
A graha placed in the 6th, the 8th, the 3rd or the 11th and standing in debilitation, if it aspects the lagna; or, if a benefic occupies a kendra reckoned from the lagna's navāṁśa — then is born a king who dispenses both mercy and punishment; there is no doubt in this.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 30-31
Śloka 32
Now I shall fully declare the supreme rāja-yoga and the rest — the fruit, according to the difference in the grahas' placements and according to the aspects.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 32
Śloka 33
The lord of the tapaḥ-sthāna is the counsellor, and especially so the lord of the mantra-sthāna; if the two of them are situated in each other's places, the one born here becomes a possessor of kingdom.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 33
Śloka 34
If those two (the 9th lord and the 5th lord, from the preceding verse) are conjoined in whatever bhāva, or else stand in mutual 1st–7th positions, a child born in a royal line certainly becomes a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 34
Śloka 35
The lord of the vehicle-bhāva (4th) is in the māna-bhāva (10th), and the lord of the 10th stands in the 4th; if [this] is aspected by the lords of intellect (5th) and of dharma (9th), [the native] is a possessor of kingship.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 35
Śloka 36
When the lords of the son-bhāva (5th), of the sky-bhāva (10th), of the happiness-bhāva (4th) and of the body-bhāva (lagna) are joined with the lord of dharma (9th), they make the native a king whose fame pervades to the ends of the directions.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 36
Śloka 37
Or else, if the lords of the happiness-bhāva (4th) and of the karma-bhāva (10th) are conjoined with the minister-lord (5th lord), or are joined with the lord of dharma (9th), the one born [then] is a possessor of kingship.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 37
Śloka 38
Or when [the 9th lord or the lagna lord], accompanied by the lord of the son-bhāva (5th), has gone to the body-bhāva (lagna), the fourth, or the sky-bhāva (10th) — whether it be with the lord of dharma (9th) or with the lord of the lagna — the man becomes a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 38
Śloka 39
When Jupiter has gone to the dharma-sthāna (9th), it being his own house, and is joined by Venus — or else is joined by the lord of the 5th — the one born [then] is a possessor of kingship.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 39
Śloka 40
After midday and after midnight, two and a half nāḍikās are auspicious; one born in that [span] becomes a king, or else the equal of a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 40
Śloka 41
The Moon [aspecting] Venus and Venus [aspecting] the Moon, the two being placed in the third and the eleventh and mutually aspected — or standing anywhere at all yet aspecting each other — this is declared to be a producer of rāja-yoga.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 41
Śloka 42
When the Moon, being strong, stands in a vargottama navāṃśa and is aspected by grahas numbering four or five, the man becomes a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 42
Śloka 43
When the lagna occupies a vargottama aṃśa and is well aspected by grahas numbering three or more, the Moon excluded, the man is assuredly born a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 43
Śloka 44
By grahas standing in exaltation even fewer than three, one born in a king's lineage becomes a king; but one of a lineage other than that becomes equal to a king in wealth and the rest.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 44
Śloka 45
By grahas numbering four or five standing in their own exaltation or in a koṇa, even one born in a base family becomes a king; no deliberation need be made about this.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 45
Śloka 46
By six grahas gone to their own exaltation a man becomes a sovereign emperor. Thus, O Maitreya, the manifold rāja-yogas are held [so] by the good.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 46
Śloka 47
If even a single one — Mercury, Jupiter, or Venus — is seated in exaltation, and the kendra is occupied by benefic grahas, [the native is] a king, or else the equal of a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 47
Śloka 48
With all the benefics gone to the kendras and the malefics [gone] to the third, the sixth and the eleventh, a man born even in a base family becomes a lord of the earth; there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 40, śloka 48
