[Maitreya said:] The qualities of the grahas and of the rāśis which have been declared by you — those I have now heard. Desiring to hear [further], tell me the distinctions of the bhāvas.
BPHS Adhyāya 6, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Parāśara's undertaking to state the sixteen vargas

Śloka 3 — Enumeration of the sixteen vargas (first eight)

The Pitṛs are the lords of the Moon's horā; the Devas are declared [the lords] of the Sun's. A horā is half a rāśi, and these are held to be twenty-four.

Of those horās, beginning from Meṣa, there are two rounds. The third-parts of a rāśi are the dreṣkāṇas, and they are said to be thirty-six; of them there are three rounds, in order, beginning from Meṣa.

Śloka 51 — Ṣoḍaśavarga combinations — Śakrasiṃhāsana, Goloka, Śrīvallabha; closing of the varga-bheda list
By the Śakras [fourteen] it becomes Śakrasiṃhāsana; by the tithis [fifteen], Goloka; by the kings [sixteen] it is named Śrīva[lla]bha. Thus the varga-distinctions have been set forth.

Śloka 52 — Which vargas are to be taken as auspicious
The vargas of the lord of one's own ucca, of one's mūlatrikoṇa and of one's own bhāvana, and likewise — reckoned from the ārūḍha — the vargas of the lords of the kendras, are to be taken [as favourable] by the discerning.
BPHS Adhyāya 6, śloka 52
Śloka 53 — Which grahas' vargas destroy the yoga
Grahas that are combust, defeated [in planetary war] by another graha, gone to nīca, and likewise weak, or fallen into śayana and the other [avasthās], or ill-placed — such grahas are destroyers of the yoga.
