Śloka 1 — Introduction — the radiance of the five mahābhūtas as a means of knowing the running daśā
अथ ब्रवीमि ते पञ्चमहाभूतप्रभां द्विज !। यज्ज्ञानतो ग्रहाणां विद्यमाना ज्ञायते दशा ॥ १ ॥
Now, O twice-born one (Maitreya), I shall declare to you the radiance of the five great elements, by the knowledge of which the currently operating daśā of the grahas is ascertained.

Śloka 2 — Assignment of the five elements to the grahas Mars through Saturn
भौमादयोऽग्निभूम्याका-शाम्बुवाताधिपाः स्मृताः। बलानुसारं खेटानां भूतानां फलमीरितम् ॥ २ ॥
Mars and the rest are held to be the lords of fire, earth, ether, water and air (respectively). In accordance with the strength of the grahas, the result of the (corresponding) elements is declared.

Śloka 3 — Elemental constitution from the strongest graha — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter
भौमे बलिष्ठे तु शिखि-प्रकृतिर्मानवो भवेत्। ज्ञे धराप्रकृतिर्ज्ञेया देवेज्ये खस्वभाववान् ॥ ३ ॥
If Mars is the strongest, the man is of fiery constitution. If Mercury (is strongest), an earthy constitution is to be known; if Jupiter, he is of the nature of ether (space).

Śloka 4 — Elemental constitution — Venus, Saturn, and mixed
सिते वारिप्रकृतिको मन्दे वातस्वभाववान्। मिश्रप्रकृतिको ज्ञेयो मिश्रखेटैर्द्विजोत्तम ! ॥ ४ ॥
If Venus (is strongest) he is of watery constitution; if Saturn, he is of airy nature. By a mixture of grahas (being equally strong) he is to be known as of mixed constitution, O best of the twice-born (Maitreya)!

Śloka 5 — Sun and Moon's elements; each graha reveals its elemental radiance in its own bhukti
रवावग्निप्रकृतिकश्चन्द्रेऽम्बुप्रकृतिर्भवेत्। खेटाः स्वभुक्तौ भूतोत्थां बोधयन्ति निजां प्रभाम् ॥ ५ ॥
If the Sun (is strongest) he is of fiery constitution, and if the Moon, of watery constitution. The grahas, during their own bhukti, make manifest their own radiance arising from (their) element.

Śloka 6 — Lakṣaṇas of the fire-natured person
अग्निस्वभावो मनुजो बुभुक्षुर्बहुभुक् चलः। शूरः कृशाङ्गो गौराङ्गो मनीषी मानवान् खरः ॥ ६ ॥
A man of fiery nature is always hungry, eats much, is restless, brave, lean-limbed, fair-bodied, intelligent, self-respecting (fond of honour), and harsh (sharp).

Śloka 7 — Lakṣaṇas of the earth-natured person
भूमिस्वभावो मनुजो भोगाढ्योऽतिबलः सुखी। पद्मकर्पूरसुरभिः क्षान्तः पञ्चाननस्वनः ॥ ७ ॥
A man of earthy nature is rich in enjoyments, exceedingly strong and happy; he is fragrant like lotus and camphor, forbearing, and his voice is like a lion's.

Śloka 8 — Lakṣaṇas of the ether-natured person
नभःस्वभावो मनुजो नयविज्ञानवानपि। असंवृतमुखो लम्बः शब्दार्थज्ञोऽतितीव्रधीः ॥ ८ ॥
A man of the nature of ether is versed in polity and in knowledge; his mouth is uncovered (open), he is tall, a knower of word and meaning, and of exceedingly keen intellect.

Śloka 9 — Lakṣaṇas of the water-natured person
अम्बुस्वभावो मनुजः प्रभावान् मृदुलः सुधीः। भूपोऽनेकसुहृद्-भार-वाहकः प्रियभाषणः ॥ ९ ॥
A man of watery nature is lustrous (influential), gentle, of good intellect, a ruler of the earth, one who bears the burden of many friends, and sweet of speech.

Śloka 10 — Lakṣaṇas of the air-natured person
वातप्रकृतिकश्चण्डो दानी गौरतनुर्नृपः। क्षीणोऽटनप्रियश्चारि-मर्दनो मनुजो भवेत् ॥ १० ॥
The man of airy constitution is fierce (wrathful), liberal in giving, fair of body, a king, thin (wasted), fond of roaming, and a crusher of enemies.

Śloka 11 — Effects of the manifest fire-radiance (agni-prabhā)
अग्निप्रभायां मनुजः स्वर्णाभः शुभदृष्टिमान्। सर्वार्थसिद्धिमाञ्जेता वित्तलाभान्वितो भवेत् ॥ ११ ॥
When the fire-radiance is manifest, the man has the sheen of gold and an auspicious gaze; he attains the accomplishment of all his objects, is victorious, and is endowed with gain of wealth.

Śloka 12 — Effects of the manifest earth-radiance (mahī-prabhā)
महीप्रभायां मनुजस्तनौ चारुसुगन्धवान्। सुस्निग्धदन्तनखरो धनधर्मसुखान्वितः ॥ १२ ॥
When the earth-radiance is manifest, the man has a lovely fragrance in his body, glossy teeth and nails, and is endowed with wealth, dharma and happiness.

Śloka 13 — Effects of the manifest ether-radiance (nabhas-prabhā)
प्रभा नभोभवा शुभ्रा वाचः प्रागल्भ्यदा स्मृता। सत्स्वनश्रुतिसंभूतं सौख्यं तस्यां भवेद् ध्रुवम् ॥ १३ ॥
The radiance born of ether is held to be white (bright) and to confer boldness of speech; in it, happiness arising from the hearing of pleasant sounds certainly occurs.

Śloka 14 — Effects of the manifest water-radiance (ambu-prabhā)
अम्बुप्रभायां तु भवेत् तनौ स्वास्थ्यं च मार्दवम्। नरस्येष्टरसास्वादसौख्यं संजायते ध्रुवम् ॥ १४ ॥
When the water-radiance is manifest, there is health and softness in the body, and the man certainly obtains the pleasure of tasting the flavours he desires.

Śloka 15 — Effects of the manifest air-radiance (vāta-prabhā)
वातप्रभायां मनुजे मौढ्यं मलिनता गदाः। दीनताऽपि च तापश्च दृश्यन्ते सर्वदा बुधैः ॥ १५ ॥
When the air-radiance is manifest in a man, dullness, dirtiness, diseases, and also wretchedness and burning distress are always observed by the wise.

Śloka 16 — Strength condition — reversal when the grahas are weak
भौमादिषु बलाढ्येषु फलमित्थं प्रजायते। बलहीनेषु तेष्वेवं वैपरीत्येन तद् वदेत् ॥ १६ ॥
When Mars and the rest are rich in strength, the results arise as described. When those same are devoid of strength, one should declare that result in the reverse.

Śloka 17 — Nīca/enemy rāśi reversal; weak grahas give results only in dream
ग्रहैर्नीचारिराशिस्थैर्भवेत् फलविपर्ययम्। निर्बलैस्तैस्तु पूर्वोक्त-फलं स्वप्ने समादिशेत् ॥ १७ ॥
When the grahas are situated in their nīca or in the rāśi of an enemy, there is a reversal of the result. But when those (grahas) are powerless, one should assign the aforesaid result (as occurring) in dream.

Śloka 18 — Using the elemental marks to infer the current daśā when the birth time is unknown, and pacifying it
अज्ञातजनुषां नॄणां फलपाकैर्वियत्सदाम्। विद्यमाना दशा बोध्या तद्दुष्टफलशान्तये ॥ १८ ॥
For men whose birth (time) is unknown, the currently operating daśā is to be ascertained by the ripening of the results of the sky-dwellers (i.e. of the planets, through the elemental prabhā-signs described above), so that the evil results thereof may be pacified.
