Chapter on the Results of a Woman's Nativity — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 80
The complete Chapter on the Results of a Woman's Nativity chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 56 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — how are women's nativities read?
[Maitreya said:] I have heard the birth-results of men as declared by you, O Bhagavan. Now, how are those of women to be known? Tell me this.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Parāśara's reply — women's results are as for men
[Parāśara said:] This question of yours is a good one, dear child; I shall speak — listen with your mind fixed on it. The maharṣis have said that the results for women too are to be known just as for men.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Which bhāvas to judge — lagna for body, fifth for offspring
But hear also, O twice-born one, whatever special points arise. From the lagna the consideration of the body should be made, and from the fifth that of childbearing.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Seventh for husband, eighth for widowhood; male-only results shift to the husband
From the seventh (kalatra) [judge] the husband, and from the eighth (randhra) widowhood, O best of the twice-born. Whatever result is inapplicable to a woman should be declared of her husband.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Lagna and Moon in even rāśis — feminine nature
If the lagna and the Moon are in even rāśis, she is settled in her own nature — endowed with good character and auspicious marks, and possessed of qualities befitting herself.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Benefic aspect vs odd rāśis and malefic aspect
When those two are aspected by benefics, the woman is fortunate, healthy and happy. In odd (oja) rāśis she has a masculine form; and when the two are aspected by malefics she is devoid of good character.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Malefic conjunction; mixed influence; take the stronger of lagna and Moon
If the two are joined by malefics she is of bad qualities; with both benefics and malefics the result is good and bad mixed. But the result should be taken in its entirety from whichever of the Moon and the lagna is the stronger.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Judge from the rāśi and triṃśāṃśa of the stronger of lagna and Moon
Whichever of the lagna (aṅga) and the Moon is the stronger — from the rāśi it occupies, or from its triṃśāṃśa, the learned have declared the results of women.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Stronger of lagna/Moon in a Mars rāśi — by triṃśāṃśa lord
If the stronger of the two is in a house of Mars and in the triṃśāṃśa of Mars, she is a woman of ill conduct; in that of Venus she is of bad character; in that of Mercury she is held to be deceitful.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — Mars rāśi continued (Saturn, Jupiter aṃśas); then Mercury's rāśi
In Saturn's triṃśāṃśa she is a maidservant; in Jupiter's, chaste. In Mercury's [rāśi], in Mars's [aṃśa], she is given to deceit; in Venus's she is called lustful; in Mercury's aṃśa she is remembered as endowed with good qualities.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Mercury rāśi (Saturn, Jupiter aṃśas); then Venus's rāśi
In Saturn's aṃśa she is afflicted with sexlessness (klībatā); in Jupiter's, virtuous. And in a Venus rāśi (kāvyabha): in Mars's aṃśa she is of bad conduct, in Venus's she is renowned for her qualities.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Venus rāśi continued; then the Moon's rāśi (Cancer)
In Mercury's aṃśa she is endowed with the fine arts; in Jupiter's she is deemed virtuous; in Saturn's aṃśa she is a dīdhiṣū (a woman married a second time). In the Moon's rāśi, in Mars's aṃśa, she is independent.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Moon's rāśi (Cancer) — remaining aṃśa lords
In Venus's [aṃśa] she is wanton; in Mercury's aṃśa skilled in crafts and arts; in Jupiter's exceedingly virtuous; and in Saturn's triṃśāṃśa a destroyer of her husband.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Sun's rāśi (Leo) — by triṃśāṃśa lord
In the Sun's rāśi also: in Mars's aṃśa she is a chatterer; in Venus's aṃśa chaste; in Mercury's aṃśa of masculine form; in Jupiter's a queen; and in Saturn's aṃśa fallen.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Jupiter's rāśis (Sagittarius, Pisces) — by triṃśāṃśa lord
In Jupiter's rāśi: in Mars's aṃśa she is of abundant good qualities; in Venus's, unchaste; in Mercury's aṃśa a knower of the sciences; in Jupiter's endowed with exceeding qualities.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Jupiter's rāśi (Saturn aṃśa); then Saturn's rāśis
In Saturn's aṃśa she has little appetite for intercourse. In Saturn's rāśi, in Mars's [aṃśa] too, she is a maidservant; in Venus's aṃśa learned; in Mercury's aṃśa sinful and consorting with low men.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 16
Śloka 17 — Saturn's rāśi concluded; then the empty, unaspected seventh
In Jupiter's [aṃśa] she is chaste; in Saturn's triṃśāṃśa she goes with low men. If the seventh has no graha in it and is not aspected by benefics, the husband is a bad man.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 17
Śloka 18 — Movable seventh; Saturn+Mercury there; Sun or Mars in the seventh
If the seventh is a movable rāśi, [the husband] dwells abroad; if Saturn and Mercury are there, he is impotent (ṣaṇḍa). With the Sun in the seventh she is abandoned by her husband; with Mars, she is a widow in childhood.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 18
Śloka 19 — Saturn in the seventh aspected by malefics; benefics vs malefics there
If Saturn [is in the seventh] aspected by malefics, the girl reaches old age unmarried. With benefics placed there she is virtuous [and her husband lives]; with malefics she becomes a widow.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 19
Śloka 20 — Mixed grahas in the seventh; Venus–Mars mutual navāṃśa exchange
With mixed grahas [in the seventh] she is twice wedded, having both auspicious and inauspicious results. If Venus and Mars occupy each other's aṃśas, she goes to other men.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 20
Śloka 21 — Moon in the seventh in that yoga; Venus+Moon in a Venus/Saturn lagna
In that same yoga, with the Moon in the seventh, she goes to other men by her husband's own command. And when the lagna is in a rāśi of Venus or of Saturn, with Venus and the Moon placed in it —
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 21
Śloka 22 — Result of that lagna combination; Mars rāśi/aṃśa in the seventh
— then that woman is certainly unchaste (pāṃśulā), and so together with her mother. If in the seventh (mada = 7th bhāva) there is Mars's navāṃśa, or else his rāśi, her husband is wrathful and lecherous.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 22
Śloka 23 — Mercury's or Jupiter's rāśi/aṃśa in the seventh — the husband
In Mercury's rāśi or his aṃśa [in the seventh], the husband knows the fine arts and is very learned. With Jupiter's in the seventh he is of many virtues and has his senses under control.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 23
Śloka 24 — Venus's or Saturn's rāśi/aṃśa in the seventh — the husband
In Venus's, the husband is fortunate, handsome and dear to women. In Saturn's rāśi or his aṃśa in the seventh, he is dull-witted and afflicted by old age.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 24
Śloka 25 — Leo or Cancer rāśi/aṃśa in the seventh — the husband
In the aṃśa of Leo, or in that rāśi, he is exceedingly harsh and a doer of much work. In the Moon's rāśi or aṃśa in the seventh, the husband is handsome, amorous and gentle.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 25
Śloka 26 — Mixed rāśi/aṃśa; the Sun in the eighth
With mixed [rāśi and navāṃśa lords] the result is mixed, [to be declared] according to the strength of the rāśi and of the navāṃśa. With the Sun placed in the eighth, the girl is poor and sorrowful,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 26
Śloka 27 — Sun in the eighth concluded; Moon in the eighth
— distressed, with a wounded body, and always averse to dharma. With the Moon placed in the eighth, she has ill-formed breasts and genitals,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 27
Śloka 28 — Moon in the eighth concluded; Mars in the eighth
— is without clothes and ornaments, sickly and greatly censured. Born with Mars in the eighth she is diseased and weak,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 28
Śloka 29 — Mars in the eighth concluded; Mercury in the eighth
— lustreless, grieved by sorrow and torment, and reckoned a widow. With Mercury placed in the eighth she is stricken with fear and fond of quarrel,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 29
Śloka 30 — Mercury in the eighth concluded; Jupiter in the eighth
— devoid of wealth, of dharma and of self-respect, and lacking in good qualities. With Jupiter gone to the eighth, the woman is without good character and has few offspring,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 30
Śloka 31 — Jupiter in the eighth concluded; Venus in the eighth
— abandoned by her husband, thick-footed and given to lying about, and an abundant eater. With Venus placed in the eighth she is heedless (intoxicated), penniless and unclean,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 31
Śloka 32 — Venus in the eighth concluded; Saturn in the eighth
— deceitful, cruel and devoid of dharma: so is she described by the wise. With Saturn gone to the eighth the girl is unclean and bent upon cheating,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 32
Śloka 33 — Saturn in the eighth concluded; Rāhu in the eighth
— she turns out of bad disposition and bereft of happiness from her husband. With Rāhu (aga) in the eighth, the woman is cruel-hearted and diseased,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 33
Śloka 34 — Rāhu in the eighth concluded; barrenness combination — Venus and Moon in lagna
— she is also abandoned by her husband, wanton, and ill-formed. If Venus and the Moon are in the lagna joined with Saturn and Mars,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 34
Śloka 35 — Vandhyā (barrenness) yoga and its remedy
— and the fifth is aspected by or joined with malefics, then she is held to be barren. But through the bathing (abhiṣeka) of Śiva or through the kīrtana of Viṣṇu she may indeed become possessed of offspring.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 35
Śloka 36 — Durbhagā / subhagā by the aṃśa in the seventh
When the seventh holds a malefic's aṃśa and is aspected by Saturn, she is unfortunate. When a benefic's aṃśa is there, she is dear to her husband and deemed fortunate.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 36
Śloka 37 — Happiness in the father's house
If at the time of birth the lagna is in a rāśi of Mercury together with Venus and the Moon, then she is filled with every kind of happiness in her father's house.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 37
Śloka 38 — Benefics in the lagna — happiness, sons and wealth
Venus, the Moon and Mercury, [together] gone to the lagna, bestow abundant happiness and good qualities. Jupiter gone there produces sons, wealth, happiness and prosperity.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 38
Śloka 39 — Vandhyā and kāka-vandhyā yogas
If the Sun and the Moon are in the eighth from the lagna and stand in their own houses, the girl is barren; and if Mercury and the Moon are so placed, she is a kāka-vandhyā (bearing but one child).
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 39
Śloka 40 — Certain barrenness — Saturn/Mars lagna with Venus and Moon
When the lagna falls in a rāśi of Saturn or Mars, and Venus together with the Moon is in it, and it is aspected by a malefic, then the girl is born assuredly barren.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 40
Śloka 41 — Mṛtāpatyā yoga — children who die
When the fifth also holds malefics, and either the Sun accompanied by Rāhu is in the seventh, or Venus, Jupiter and Rāhu are in the eighth (mṛta) — then indeed her children die.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 41
Śloka 42 — Miscarriage yoga
If Venus, Jupiter and Mars are in the eighth, or if Mars is in the seventh (the house of the spouse) aspected by or joined with Saturn, then the woman is subject to miscarriage.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 42
Śloka 43 — Kula-hantṛ yoga — destroyer of the family line
If at birth a malefic kartari (scissors) falls upon both the lagna and the Moon, then the girl destroys the family of her husband and likewise that of her father.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 43
Śloka 44 — Viṣakanyā yoga (first definition) — by tithi, weekday and nakṣatra
A woman born on a bhadrā tithi, on the day of Mars, of the Sun or of Saturn, and in the nakṣatra of the serpent (Āśleṣā), of Varuṇa (Śatabhiṣā) or of Agni (Kṛttikā), is named viṣa[-kanyā] and assuredly partakes of evil results.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 44
Śloka 45 — Viṣakanyā yoga (second definition) — by house placement
At whose birth a benefic and a malefic are in the lagna, and two malefics stand in the sixth house — that maiden bears the appellation viṣa[-kanyā].
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 45
Śloka 46 — Results of the viṣakanyā yoga
A girl born under the viṣa yoga becomes one whose children die; she is without clothing and ornaments, and filled with anguish and grief.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 46
Śloka 47 — Cancellation of the viṣa yoga
If a benefic, or else the lord of the seventh, stands in the seventh from the lagna or from the Moon, then that yoga called viṣa is destroyed beyond doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 47
Śloka 48 — Patighātaka yoga — Mars killing the husband
Mars standing in the fourth (pātāla), in the lagna, in the eighth, in the seventh (jāmitra), or in the twelfth kills the husband — provided he is not joined with or aspected by benefics.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 48
Śloka 49 — The same houses reckoned from the Moon; and the yoga in the groom's chart
Mars, or else Saturn, standing in the said houses reckoned from the Moon also destroys a woman's husband. If the same [yoga] belongs to the bridegroom, then the death of the wife [is to be declared].
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 49
Śloka 50 — Cancellation of the widowhood yoga by matching charts
If the yoga that gives widowhood to women occurs in a man's nativity, then destruction of the wife results. But if it is present in both charts, it is held to be auspicious.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 50
Śloka 51 — Saturn–Venus mutual navāṃśa, or Aquarius navāṃśa in a Venus lagna
If Saturn and Venus stand in each other's navāṃśas and aspect one another; or else if the lagna is in a Venus rāśi with the navāṃśa of Aquarius,
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 51
Śloka 52 — Result of that combination
— the girl so born, in her youth, tormented by desire and of masculine form, quells her own fire of passion by means of a like-minded female companion.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 52
Śloka 53 — Learning in Vedānta and the śāstras
When Mars, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter are strong and the lagna is an even rāśi, the girl born is a knower of Vedānta and skilled in many śāstras.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 53
Śloka 54 — Sannyāsa yoga for a woman
When the seventh has malefics in it and the ninth also holds a graha, then the woman becomes a renunciant — especially in the bhukti of the malefic.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 54
Śloka 55 — Death together with the husband
If a benefic and a malefic are both placed in the eighth and are of equal strength, the woman, meeting death together with her husband, goes to the abode of the gods.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 55
Śloka 56 — Death before the husband
When a benefic is placed in the eighth from the lagna, free from the aspect or conjunction of malefics, the woman assuredly meets her death before her husband.
BPHS Adhyāya 80, śloka 56
