Śloka 1 — Maitreya's fresh question (frame)

मुने ! पुंसामपि स्त्रीणां फलं तु भवतोदितम् । इदानीमभिलष्यामि श्रोतुमन्यद् ब्रवीहि तत् ॥ १ ॥

O Muni! The results for men and also for women have been declared by you. Now I wish to hear something else — pray tell me that.

Śloka 2 — the problem: pious men without sons

मनीषिणो हि धर्मिष्ठाः पुत्रहीना भवन्ति हि । पुत्रहीनस्य गदिता शास्त्रेषु न शुभा गतिः ॥ २ ॥

Thoughtful men, indeed the most righteous, do turn out to be without sons; and in the śāstras no auspicious after-course is declared for one who is sonless.

Śloka 3 — cause of sonlessness, and its remedy

हेतुना केन तेषां वै जायते पुत्रहीनता । पुत्राभावे सुतप्राप्तिः कथं भवितुमर्हति ॥ ३ ॥

From what cause does sonlessness arise for them? And when there is absence of a son, how can the obtaining of a son come to pass?

Śloka 4 — how the astrologer reads it from the lagna

लग्नात् पुत्राभावहेतु-ज्ञानं ज्योतिर्विदां कथम् । कृपया सर्वमेतत्तु स्फुटं कथय मे प्रभो ॥ ४ ॥

How is knowledge of the cause of the absence of sons to be had by astrologers from the lagna? Kindly tell me all this plainly, O Lord.

Śloka 5 — Parāśara approves; cites Śiva–Pārvatī dialogue

प्रश्नोऽयं ते मुने ! साधुः पार्वत्यापि कृतः पुरा । अधुना वच्मि ते सर्वं शम्भुना भाषितं यथा ॥ ५ ॥

Good is this question of yours, O Muni! Pārvatī too asked it of old. Now I shall tell you the whole of it exactly as it was spoken by Śambhu.

Śloka 6 — Pārvatī's question

दुरितेन तु केन स्यान्नृणां वै सन्ततिक्षयः । तज्ज्ञानं रक्षणोपायं चापि मे कथय प्रभो ॥ ६ ॥

Pārvatī said: By what sin does destruction of offspring befall men? Tell me, O Lord, both the means of knowing it and the means of protection.

Śloka 7 — Śaṅkara's assent

प्रश्नोऽयं देवि ! ते साधुर्वच्मि सन्ततिनाशकान् । योगानपि च तद्रक्षो-पायाञ् शृणु समाहिता ॥ ७ ॥

Śaṅkara said: Good is this question of yours, O Devī. I shall declare the yogas that destroy offspring, and also the means of protecting them — listen with a collected mind.

Śloka 8 — anapatya-yoga (childlessness)

गुरुलग्नेशदारेश-पुत्रस्थानाधिपेषु च । सर्वेषु बलहीनेषु वक्तव्या त्वनपत्यता ॥ ८ ॥

When Guru (Jupiter), the lord of the lagna, the lord of the 7th and the lord of the 5th bhāva are all destitute of strength, childlessness is to be declared.

Śloka 9 — anapatya-yoga — malefics strong in the 5th

रव्यारराहुशनयो बलिनः पञ्चमे स्थिताः । जातस्तदाऽनपत्यः स्यान्निर्बला यदि कारकाः ॥ ९ ॥

When the Sun, Mars, Rāhu and Saturn, being strong, are posited in the 5th, and if the kārakas are without strength, then the native will be childless.

Śloka 10 — sarpaśāpa (serpent's curse) — Rāhu in the 5th

पुत्रस्थानगते राहौ कुजेन च निरीक्षिते । कुजक्षेत्रगते वाऽपि सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १० ॥

When Rāhu has gone to the 5th bhāva and is aspected by Mars, or is likewise in a rāśi of Mars, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 11 — sarpaśāpa — 5th lord with Rāhu, Saturn in the 5th

पुत्रेशे राहुसंयुक्ते पुत्रस्थे भानुनन्दने । चन्द्रेक्षितयुते वापि सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ११ ॥

When the lord of the 5th is joined with Rāhu, and Saturn (son of the Sun) stands in the 5th, aspected by or conjoined with the Moon, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 12 — sarpaśāpa — kāraka with Rāhu, weak 5th lord

कारके राहुसंयुक्ते पुत्रेशे बलवर्जिते । लग्नाधिपे सभौमेऽपि सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १२ ॥

When the kāraka is joined with Rāhu, the lord of the 5th is bereft of strength, and the lord of the lagna too is with Mars, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 13 — sarpaśāpa — kāraka with Mars, Rāhu in lagna

कारके भौमसंयुक्ते लग्ने चाप्यहिसंयुते । पुत्रस्थानेश्वरे दुःस्थे सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १३ ॥

When the kāraka is joined with Mars, and the lagna too is joined by the Serpent (Rāhu), and the lord of the 5th bhāva is ill-placed, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 14 — sarpaśāpa — Mercury as 5th lord in Mars's aṃśa

भौमांशे भौमसंयुक्ते पुत्रेशे सोमनन्दने । राहुमान्दियुते लग्ने सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १४ ॥

When Mercury (son of the Moon), being lord of the 5th, is in an aṃśa of Mars and joined with Mars, and the lagna is joined by Rāhu and Māndi, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 15 — sarpaśāpa — 5th a Mars rāśi, 5th lord with Rāhu

पुत्रस्थाने कुजक्षेत्रे पुत्रेशे राहुणान्विते । सौम्यदृष्टे युते वाऽपि सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १५ ॥

When the 5th bhāva is a rāśi of Mars, the lord of the 5th is joined with Rāhu, and is aspected by or conjoined with Mercury, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 16 — sarpaśāpa — crowd of grahas in the 5th

पुत्रस्था भानुमन्दाराः स्वर्भानुः शशिजोऽङ्गिराः । निर्बलौ पुत्रलग्नेशौ सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १६ ॥

When the Sun, Saturn and Mars, together with Rāhu, Mercury and Jupiter, stand in the 5th, and the lords of the 5th and of the lagna are without strength, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 17 — sarpaśāpa — lagna lord with Rāhu, 5th lord with Mars

लग्नेशे राहुसंयुक्ते पुत्रेशे भौमसंयुते । कारके राहुसहिते सर्पशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १७ ॥

When the lord of the lagna is joined with Rāhu, the lord of the 5th is joined with Mars, and the kāraka is together with Rāhu, there is loss of children through a serpent's curse.

Śloka 18 — remedy for sarpaśāpa — Nāga worship

नभोगयोगतः पुंसां ज्ञात्वैवमनपत्यताम् । तद्दोषपरिहारार्थं नागपूजां समाचरेत् ॥ १८ ॥

Having thus known men's childlessness from the yogas of the sky-travellers (the grahas), one should duly perform worship of the Nāgas in order to remove that doṣa.

Śloka 19 — remedy — golden Nāga image and its consecration

स्वगृह्योक्तविधानेन प्रतिष्ठां कारयेत् सुधीः । नागमूर्तिं सुवर्णेन कृत्वा पूजां समाचरेत् ॥ १९ ॥

The wise man should have the consecration performed by the rule laid down in his own Gṛhya[sūtra]; having made an image of the Nāga in gold, he should perform the worship.

Śloka 20 — remedy — gifts, and the promised increase of family

गोभूतिलहिरण्यादि दद्याद् वित्तानुसारतः । एवं कृते तु नागेन्द्र-प्रसादाद् वर्धते कुलम् ॥ २० ॥

He should give cows, land, sesame, gold and the like according to his means. This being done, by the grace of the lord of the Nāgas the family increases.

Śloka 21 — pitṛśāpa (father's curse) — debilitated Sun in the 5th

पुत्रस्थानं गते भानौ नीचे मन्दांशकस्थिते । पार्श्वयोः क्रूरसम्बन्धे पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २१ ॥

When the Sun, debilitated and standing in an aṃśa of Saturn, has gone to the 5th bhāva, and there is connection with cruel (malefic) grahas on both flanking sides, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 22 — pitṛśāpa — Sun as 5th lord in a koṇa, hemmed

पुत्रस्थानाधिपे भानौ त्रिकोणे पापसंयुते । क्रूरान्तरे पापदृष्टे पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २२ ॥

When the Sun, being lord of the 5th bhāva, is in a koṇa joined with a malefic, is between cruel grahas and aspected by a malefic, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 23 — pitṛśāpa — Jupiter in Leo, 5th lord with the Sun

भानुराशिस्थिते जीवे पुत्रेशे भानुसंयुते । पुत्रे लग्ने पापयुक्ते पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २३ ॥

When Jupiter stands in the Sun's rāśi, the lord of the 5th is joined with the Sun, and the 5th and the lagna are joined by malefics, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 24 — pitṛśāpa — weak lagna lord in the 5th

लग्नेशे दुर्बले पुत्रे पुत्रेशे भानुसंयुते । पुत्रे लग्ने पापयुक्ते पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २४ ॥

When the lord of the lagna is weak and in the 5th, the lord of the 5th is joined with the Sun, and the 5th and the lagna are joined by malefics, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 25 — pitṛśāpa — exchange of 10th and 5th lords

पितृस्थानाधिपे पुत्रे पुत्रेशे वा पितृगृहे । पुत्रे लग्ने पापयुक्ते पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २५ ॥

When the lord of the father's house is in the 5th, or the lord of the 5th is in the father's house, and the 5th and the lagna are joined by malefics, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 26 — pitṛśāpa — Mars as 10th lord with the 5th lord

पितृस्थानाधिपो भौमः पुत्रेशेन समन्वितः । लग्ने पुत्रे पितृस्थाने पापे सन्ततिनाशनम् ॥ २६ ॥

When Mars, being lord of the father's house, is conjoined with the lord of the 5th, and malefics are in the lagna, the 5th and the father's house, there is destruction of offspring.

Śloka 27 — pitṛśāpa — 10th lord ill-placed, kāraka in a malefic sign

पितृस्थानाधिपे दुःस्थे कारके पापराशिगे । पापाढ्यौ लग्नसुतपौ पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २७ ॥

When the lord of the father's house is ill-placed, the kāraka is in a malefic's rāśi, and the lords of the lagna and of the 5th are laden with malefics, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 28 — pitṛśāpa — Sun, Mars, Saturn in 1st/5th

लग्नपञ्चमभावस्था भानुभौमशनैश्चराः । रन्ध्रे रिष्फे राहुजीवौ पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ २८ ॥

When the Sun, Mars and Saturn are placed in the lagna and the 5th bhāva, and Rāhu and Jupiter are in the 8th and the 12th, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 29 — pitṛśāpa — Sun in 8th, Saturn in 5th

लग्नादष्टमगे भानौ पुत्रस्थे भानुनन्दने । पुत्रेशे राहुसंयुक्ते लग्ने पापे सुतक्षयः ॥ २९ ॥

When the Sun has gone to the 8th from the lagna, Saturn stands in the 5th, the lord of the 5th is joined with Rāhu, and a malefic is in the lagna, there is loss of children.

Śloka 30 — pitṛśāpa — 12th, 8th and 10th lords displaced

व्ययेशे लग्नभावस्थे रन्ध्रेशे पुत्रराशिगे । पितृस्थानाधिपे रन्ध्रे पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३० ॥

When the lord of the 12th is in the lagna bhāva, the lord of the 8th has gone to the rāśi of the 5th, and the lord of the father's house is in the 8th, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

Śloka 31 — pitṛśāpa — 6th lord in 5th, 10th lord in 6th

रोगेशे पुत्रभावस्थे पितृस्थानाधिपेऽप्यरौ । कारके राहुसंयुक्ते पितृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३१ ॥

When the lord of the 6th (of disease) is in the 5th bhāva, the lord of the father's house is likewise in the 6th (the house of the enemy), and the kāraka is joined with Rāhu, there is loss of children through a father's curse.

BPHS Adhyāya 83, śloka 31

Śloka 32 — remedy for pitṛśāpa — Gayā-śrāddha, feeding brāhmaṇas

तद्दोषपरिहारार्थं गयाश्राद्धं च कारयेत् । ब्राह्मणान् भोजयेदत्रायुतं वापि सहस्रकम् ॥ ३२ ॥

To remove that doṣa he should have the śrāddha performed at Gayā, and here should feed ten thousand, or at least a thousand, brāhmaṇas.

Śloka 33 — remedy — kanyādāna and the gift of a cow with calf

विधाय कन्यकादानं गां च दद्यात् सवत्सकाम् । एवं कृते पितुः शापा-न्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ ३३ ॥

Having performed the giving away of a maiden [in marriage], he should also give a cow with its calf. This being done, he is released from the father's curse — there is no doubt in this.

BPHS Adhyāya 83, śloka 33

Śloka 34 — result of the remedy; closing instruction

वर्धते च कुलं तस्य पुत्रपौत्रादिभिर्मुने । नभोगयोगवशतः फलमेवं समादिशेत् ॥ ३४ ॥

And his family increases with sons, grandsons and the rest, O Muni. Thus should the result be declared according to the yogas of the sky-travelling grahas.

Śloka 35 — mātṛśāpa (mother's curse) — Moon as 5th lord afflicted

पुत्रस्थानाधिपे चन्द्रे नीचे वा पापमध्यगे । हिबुके पञ्चमे पापे मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३५ ॥

When the Moon as lord of the 5th bhāva is debilitated, or goes between malefics, and malefics are in the 4th (hibuka) and the 5th, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 36 — mātṛśāpa — Saturn in 11th, debilitated Moon in 5th

लाभे मन्दान्विते चैवं मातृस्थाने शुभेतरे । नीचे पञ्चमगे चन्द्रे मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३६ ॥

Likewise, when Saturn is in the 11th (of gain), a non-benefic occupies the mother's house, and the debilitated Moon has gone to the 5th, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 37 — mātṛśāpa — 5th lord ill-placed, lagna lord debilitated

पुत्रस्थानाधिपे दुःस्थे लग्नेशे नीचराशिगे । चन्द्रे पापसमायुक्ते मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३७ ॥

When the lord of the 5th bhāva is ill-placed, the lord of the lagna has gone to its rāśi of debilitation, and the Moon is joined with a malefic, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 38 — mātṛśāpa — Moon in a malefic aṃśa

पुत्रस्थानाधिपे दुःस्थे चन्द्रे पापांशसंगते । लग्ने पुत्रे पापयुक्ते मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ३८ ॥

When the lord of the 5th bhāva is ill-placed, the Moon has reached the aṃśa of a malefic, and the lagna and the 5th are joined by malefics, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 39 — mātṛśāpa — Moon as 5th lord with Saturn, Rāhu, Mars

पुत्रस्थानाधिपे चन्द्रे मन्दराह्वारसंयुते । भाग्ये वा पुत्रभावे वा शापान्मातुः सुतक्षयः ॥ ३९ ॥

When the Moon as lord of the 5th bhāva, joined with Saturn, Rāhu and Mars, is in the 9th or in the 5th bhāva, there is loss of children through the curse of the mother.

Śloka 40 — mātṛśāpa — Mars as 4th lord with Saturn and Rāhu

मातृस्थानाधिपे भौमे शनिराहुसमन्विते । रवीन्दुसंयुते पुत्रे लग्ने वा सन्ततेः क्षयः ॥ ४० ॥

When Mars as lord of the mother's house is conjoined with Saturn and Rāhu, and the Sun and Moon together are in the 5th or in the lagna, there is destruction of offspring.

Śloka 41 — mātṛśāpa — 1st and 5th lords in the 6th

लग्नात्मजेशौ शत्रुस्थौ रन्ध्रे मातृधिपः स्थितः । पितृनाशाधिपौ लग्ने मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४१ ॥

When the lords of the lagna and of the 5th stand in the 6th (of enemies), the lord of the mother's house is placed in the 8th, and the lords of the father's house and of destruction are in the lagna, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 42 — mātṛśāpa — 6th and 8th lords in lagna

षष्ठाष्टमेशौ लग्नस्थौ व्यये मातृधिपे, सुते । चन्द्रे जीवे च पापाढ्ये मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४२ ॥

When the lords of the 6th and 8th stand in the lagna, the lord of the mother's house is in the 12th, and the Moon and Jupiter, laden with malefics, are in the 5th, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 43 — mātṛśāpa — lagna hemmed, waning Moon in the 7th

पापमध्यगते लग्ने क्षीणे चन्द्रे च सप्तमे । मातृपुत्रे राहुमन्दौ मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४३ ॥

When the lagna lies between malefics, the waning Moon is in the 7th, and Rāhu and Saturn are in the mother's house and the 5th, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 44 — mātṛśāpa — exchange of 8th and 5th lords

नाशस्थानाधिपे पुत्रे पुत्रेशे नाशराशिगे । चन्द्रमातृपतौ दुःस्थे मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४४ ॥

When the lord of the house of destruction (8th) is in the 5th, the lord of the 5th has gone to the rāśi of the 8th, and the Moon and the lord of the mother's house are ill-placed, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 45 — mātṛśāpa — Cancer lagna with Mars and Rāhu

चन्द्रक्षेत्रे यदा लग्ने कुजराहुसमन्विते । चन्द्रमन्दौ पुत्रसंस्थौ मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४५ ॥

When the lagna is the Moon's rāśi and is joined by Mars and Rāhu, and the Moon and Saturn are placed together in the 5th, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 46 — mātṛśāpa — four malefics in 1/5/8/12

लग्ने पुत्रे मृतौ रिष्फे भौमो राहू रविः शनिः । मातृलग्नाधिपौ दुःस्थौ मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४६ ॥

When Mars is in the lagna, Rāhu in the 5th, the Sun in the 8th (the house of death) and Saturn in the 12th — respectively — and the lords of the mother's house (the 4th) and of the lagna are ill-placed, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

Śloka 47 — mātṛśāpa — Jupiter in the 8th with Mars and Rāhu

नाशस्थानं गते जीवे कुजराहुसमन्विते । पुत्रस्थाने मन्दचन्द्रौ मातृशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ४७ ॥

When Jupiter has gone to the house of destruction (8th) joined with Mars and Rāhu, and Saturn and the Moon are in the 5th bhāva, there is loss of children through a mother's curse.

BPHS Adhyāya 83, śloka 47

Śloka 48 — summing-up and turn to remedy

योगैरेभिर्जनो ज्ञेयः सन्तानरहितो द्विज । तस्मात् तद्रक्षणोपायं शान्त्यादिकमिहाचरेत् ॥ ४८ ॥

By these yogas a person is to be known as devoid of offspring, O twice-born one. Therefore one should here perform the means of protecting them — the propitiatory rites and the rest.

Śloka 49 — remedy — Setu bath, a lakh of Gāyatrī, graha-dāna

सेतुस्नानं प्रकुर्वीत गायत्री लक्षसंख्यका । ग्रहदानं च कर्त्तव्यं रौप्यमात्रं पयः पिबेत् ॥ ४९ ॥

He should perform the bath at Setu[bandha]; the Gāyatrī to the number of a lakh; the giving of the grahas' articles should be done; he should drink milk to the measure of silver.

Śloka 50 — remedy — feeding brāhmaṇas, 1008 circuits of the aśvattha

ब्राह्मणान् भोजयेत्तद्वद्-अश्वत्थस्य प्रदक्षिणम् । कर्त्तव्यं भक्तियुक्तेन चाष्टाधिकसहस्रकम् ॥ ५० ॥

Likewise he should feed brāhmaṇas; and circumambulation of the aśvattha tree is to be made by one filled with devotion, one thousand and eight times.

Śloka 51 — the promised result of the mātṛśāpa remedy

एवं कृते तु हे देवि ! शापान्मोक्षो भविष्यति । पुत्रं हि लभते पश्चाद् वृद्धिः स्यात् तस्य वंशजा ॥ ५१ ॥

This being done, O Devī, release from the curse will follow; he does obtain a son thereafter, and there is increase born of his lineage.

ब्रवीमि भ्रातृशापोत्थ-योगांस्तेऽथ द्विजोत्तम ! यज्ज्ञानतो जना यत्नं कुर्युः शापविमुक्तये ॥ ५२ ॥

Now I declare to you, O best of the twice-born, the yogas arising from a brother's curse, by the knowledge of which people may make effort for release from the curse.

When the lord of the brother's house (3rd) is in the 5th joined with Mars and Rāhu, and the lords of the 5th and of the lagna are in the 8th, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

When the lord of the lagna is in the 12th, if Mars has gone to the 5th, and the lord of the 5th together with a malefic is in the 8th, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

When the lagna lies between malefics and the sign of the 5th likewise lies between malefics, and the lords of the 5th and of the lagna are ill-placed, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

When the 5th bhāva is a rāśi of Mercury joined by Saturn and Rāhu, and if Mercury and Mars are then in the 12th, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

When the lord of the lagna is in the brother's bhāva and the lord of the brother's house is in the 5th, and malefics are in the lagna, the 3rd and the 5th, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

When the lord of the house of destruction (8th) is in the 5th joined with the lord of the brother's house, and the 8th is joined by Mars and Saturn, there is loss of children through a brother's curse.

भ्रातृशापविमोचार्थं विष्णुकीर्त्तनमादिशेत् । चान्द्रायणं चरेत् पश्चात् कावेर्यां विष्णुसन्निधौ ॥ ६३ ॥

For release from a brother's curse one should prescribe the chanting of Viṣṇu's name; thereafter one should perform the Cāndrāyaṇa [vow] on the Kāverī, in the presence of Viṣṇu.

Śloka 64 — remedy — planting an aśvattha, gift of ten cows, land

अश्वत्थस्थापनं कार्यं दशधेनुः प्रदापयेत् । प्राजापत्यं चरेद् वापि भूमिं दद्यात् फलान्विताम् ॥ ६४ ॥

The planting of an aśvattha should be done; ten milch-cows should be caused to be given. Or else he should perform the Prājāpatya [vow] and give land bearing fruit.

When the lord of the house of kinsmen is in the lagna conjoined with the lord of the 12th, and the Moon, Mercury and Mars are in the 5th, there too there is loss of children.

To remove that doṣa one should prescribe the installation of Viṣṇu; the construction of step-wells, wells, tanks and the like; and the building of embankments.

For the sake of release from the curse he should perform the giving away of a maiden in marriage, or should donate a golden image of Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa.

Śloka 94 — Śānti — ten cows, ornaments, bed and cloth to a brāhmaṇa couple

The wise man should have ten milch-cows, ornaments, a bed and clothing given to a wedded couple of the twice-born, for the gaining of good fortune and of a son.

लग्ने राहौ सशुक्रेज्ये चन्द्रे मन्दयुते तथा । लग्नेशे मृत्युराशिस्थे प्रेतशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ ९९ ॥

When Rāhu is in the lagna together with Venus or Jupiter, the Moon likewise is joined by Saturn, and the lord of the lagna stands in the rāśi of death — destruction of offspring through the curse of a preta.

When the kāraka stands in a rāśi of debilitation and the lord of children too has gone to debilitation, and they are aspected by grahas that are themselves in debilitation — destruction of offspring through the curse of a preta.

When Saturn is in the lagna, Rāhu in the fifth, the randhra (eighth) is occupied by the Sun and the twelfth is joined by Mars — destruction of offspring through the curse of a preta.

कामस्थानाधिपे दुःस्थे पुत्रे चन्द्रसमन्विते । मन्दमान्दियुते लग्ने प्रेतशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १०२ ॥

When the lord of the seventh is ill-placed, the fifth is accompanied by the Moon, and the lagna is joined by Saturn and Māndi — destruction of offspring through the curse of a preta.

Śloka 103 — Pretaśāpa — 8th lord in the 5th with Saturn and Venus, kāraka in the 8th

वधस्थानाधिपे पुत्रे शनिशुक्रसमन्विते । कारके नाशराशिस्थे प्रेतशापात् सुतक्षयः ॥ १०३ ॥

When the lord of the place of slaughter (eighth) is in the fifth, accompanied by Saturn and Venus, and the kāraka stands in the rāśi of destruction — destruction of offspring through the curse of a preta.

Śloka 104 — Śānti for pretaśāpa — śrāddha at Gayā, Rudrābhiṣeka, image of Brahmā

शान्त्यै तस्य तु दोषस्य गयायां श्राद्धमादिशेत् । रुद्राभिषेकमथवा ब्रह्ममूर्तिं प्रदापयेत् ॥ १०४ ॥

For the pacification of that affliction one should prescribe a śrāddha at Gayā, or a Rudrābhiṣeka, or should have an image of Brahmā donated.

Śloka 105 — Śānti — cow, silver vessel, blue gem, feeding of brāhmaṇas with dakṣiṇā

धेनुं रजतपात्रं च मणिं नीलमथापि वै । ब्राह्मणानां भोजनं च दक्षिणादानपूर्वकम् ॥ १०५ ॥

A milch-cow, a silver vessel, and also a blue gem; and the feeding of brāhmaṇas preceded by the giving of dakṣiṇā.

Śloka 106 — Fruit of the pretaśāpa remedy — release from the curse, a son, unshakable increase of the line

कारयेदेवमभितः शापमोक्षः प्रजायते । पुत्रावाप्तिर्भवेत्तस्य वंशवृद्धिश्च निश्चला ॥ १०६ ॥

Let him have all this done thoroughly: release from the curse comes about, he obtains a son, and the increase of his line is unshakable.

Śloka 107 — Remedies by afflicting graha — Śiva-worship for Mercury/Venus; yantra, mantra, herbs for Jupiter/Moon

शिवपूजनतः पुत्र-प्राप्तिर्दोषे शशुक्रयोः । यन्त्रमन्त्रौषधैरेवं दोषे जीवेन्दुसम्भवे ॥ १०७ ॥

When the affliction is from Mercury and Venus, the obtaining of a son comes through worship of Śiva; likewise, when the affliction arises from Jupiter and the Moon, through yantras, mantras and medicinal herbs.

Śloka 108 — Remedies by afflicting graha — Rāhu, Sun, Ketu, Mars and Saturn

स्वर्भानुजेऽङ्गनादाने-नार्कजे विष्णुपूजनात् । गोदानतो ध्वजोद्भूते रुद्रीयेणारमन्दजे ॥ १०८ ॥

When [the affliction] is born of Rāhu, by the gift of a maiden; when born of the Sun, through the worship of Viṣṇu; when arisen from Ketu, by the gift of a cow; when born of Mars and Saturn, by the Rudrī recitation.

Śloka 109 — Universal remedy — devout hearing of the Harivaṃśa

सर्वदोषोपशान्त्यै तु हरिवंशस्य कीर्तनम् । शृणोति भक्तिपूर्वं यः सन्ततिस्तस्य निश्चला ॥ १०९ ॥

But for the pacification of every affliction there is the recitation of the Harivaṃśa: he who listens to it with devotion — his progeny is unshakable.
