The complete Chapter on the Conclusion of the Treatise chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 26 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Śloka 1 — Parāśara declares the whole śāstra was received through traditional succession

मैत्रेय ! यदिदं शास्त्रमुदितं पुरतस्तव । तदिदं निखिलं प्राप्तं पारम्पर्यक्रमान्मया ॥ १ ॥

Maitreya! This śāstra which has been expounded before you — the whole of it I myself obtained through the ordered succession of tradition (pāramparya).

Śloka 2 — Line of transmission: Prajāpati → Nārada → Śaunaka and others → Parāśara

पुरा प्रजापतिः प्राह नारदाय महर्षये । स चापि शौनकादि-भ्यस्तेभ्योऽधिगतवानहम् ॥ २ ॥

In ancient times Prajāpati declared it to the great ṛṣi Nārada; and he in turn to Śaunaka and the rest; and from them I acquired it.

Śloka 3 — Persons to whom the śāstra must never be imparted

दुर्जनायाविनीताय कृतघ्नाय जडाय वा । द्वेषिणे निन्दकायापि न देयमिति कर्हिचित् ॥ ३ ॥

To a wicked man, to one lacking discipline, to an ingrate, or to a dullard, to one full of hatred, or even to a slanderer — it is never at any time to be given.

Śloka 4 — Persons who are fit to receive the śāstra

विनीतायापि विज्ञात-कुलशीलाय सेविने । मेधाविने देयमेत-दुत्तमं शास्त्रमादृतम् ॥ ३ ॥

But to one who is disciplined, whose lineage and character are well known, who renders service, and who is intelligent — to such a one this supreme and honoured śāstra should be given.

Śloka 5 — Qualifications of one fit to master Horāśāstra (part 1)

कालज्ञानपरो यश्च ग्रहर्क्षस्थितिकोविदः । गणितस्कन्धनिपुणः शब्दशास्त्रविशारदः ॥ ५ ॥

He who is devoted to the knowledge of time, well versed in the positions of the grahas and the nakṣatras, skilled in the gaṇita-skandha (the mathematical branch), and accomplished in the science of grammar —

Śloka 6 — Qualifications (part 2); pronouncements of such a one are never false

होराशास्त्रमदो ज्ञातु-मामूलमयमर्हति । शुभाशुभफलं चापि तदुक्तं वाऽनृतं भवेत् ॥ ६ ॥

— he alone is fit to know this Horāśāstra from its very root; and the auspicious and inauspicious results declared by him would not be untrue.

Śloka 7 — Opening of the अध्यायक्रम — the treatise covers many subjects in many chapters

ग्रन्थोऽसौ विप्र ! विषयै-र्विविधैरुपवर्णितः । यथाक्रममिहाध्याया बहवो विनिवेशिताः ॥ ७ ॥

O Vipra! This treatise has been set forth with manifold subjects; many chapters have been placed herein in their proper sequence.

Śloka 8 — Table of contents: creation, avatāras, nature of grahas, computation

सृष्टिक्रमस्तु तत्रादौ अवतारक्रमस्ततः । ग्रहस्वरूपमथ च ग्रहादीनां प्रसाधनम् ॥ ८ ॥

Therein, at the very beginning, the order of creation; then the order of the avatāras; then the essential nature of the grahas, and the establishing (computation) of the grahas and the rest.

Śloka 9 — Table of contents: rāśi characters, the sixteen vargas, varga analysis, kinds of aspect

राशिशीलास्ततो वर्गाः षोडशाऽपि निवेशिताः । विवेचनं च वर्गाणां ततो दृग्भेदवर्णनम् ॥ ९ ॥

Then the characters of the rāśis; the vargas, all sixteen of them, have been set down; and the discrimination of the vargas; then the description of the varieties of aspect (dṛg-bheda).

Śloka 10 — Table of contents: natal ariṣṭa and its cancellation, bhāva analysis, bhāva results

सूतिकाऽरिष्टतद्भङ्गा वर्णिताश्च पृथक् पृथक् । विवेचनं च भावानां ततो भावफलं तथा ॥ १० ॥

The Sūtikā (the chapter on the lying-in / the newborn), the ariṣṭa (natal evils), and the breaking of that ariṣṭa have been described, each one separately; and the analysis of the bhāvas, and then likewise the results of the bhāvas.

Śloka 11 — Table of contents: bhāva-lord results, Dhūma etc., true aspect and strength

भावाधीशफलं चापि धूमादिग्रहसम्भवम् । नभोगानां स्पष्टदृष्टि-बलसाधनमीरितम् ॥ ११ ॥

Also the results of the lords of the bhāvas, and that which arises from Dhūma and the other (calculated) grahas; and the computation of the exact aspect and of the strength of the sky-going grahas has been declared.

Śloka 12 — Table of contents: iṣṭa/kaṣṭa, ārūḍha pada, upapada, argalā, kārakas

इष्टकष्टविवेकश्च पदमारूढसंज्ञकम् । फलमौपपदं त्वेव-मार्गलं कारकास्तथा ॥ १२ ॥

The discrimination of iṣṭa (benefic) and kaṣṭa (malefic) values; the pada called ārūḍha; likewise the result pertaining to the upapada, the argalā, and the kārakas.

Śloka 13 — Table of contents: kārakāṃśa results, yoga chapter, Nābhasa yogas, Moon and Sun chapters

कारकांशफलं योगा-ध्यायो नाभसयोगकाः । अपि योगाश्च विविधा अध्यायौ चन्द्रसूर्यजौ ॥ १३ ॥

The results of the kārakāṃśa; the chapter on yogas; the Nābhasa yogas; and yogas of various other kinds; and the two chapters born of the Moon and of the Sun.

Śloka 14 — Table of contents: Rāja-yogas, Rājāśraya-yogas, Dhana- and Dāridrya-yogas, āyus

राजयोगास्ततो राजा-श्रययोगाश्च कीर्त्तिताः । धनयोगाश्च दारिद्र्य-योगा आयुर्विचारणा ॥ १४ ॥

Then the Rāja-yogas, and the Rājāśraya-yogas, have been proclaimed; and the Dhana-yogas and the Dāridrya-yogas, and the investigation of longevity (āyus).

Śloka 15 — Table of contents: māraka varieties, graha avasthās, daśā varieties, bhāva-lord daśā results

ततो मारकभेदाश्च ग्रहावस्थाफलं पुनः । दशाभेदा दशानां च फलं भावेशसम्भवम् ॥ १५ ॥

Then the varieties of māraka; again the results of the avasthās of the grahas; the varieties of daśā; and the result of the daśās as arising from the lords of the bhāvas.

Śloka 16 — Table of contents: daśā results, Kālacakra-daśā and rāśi-daśā results, antardaśā computation

दशाफलं, कालचक्र-दशाराशिदशाफलम् । अन्तर्दशासाधनं च ग्रहभुक्त्यन्तरादिजम् ॥ १६ ॥

The results of the daśās; the results of the Kālacakra-daśā and of the rāśi-daśās; and the computation of the antardaśās arising from the bhukti and antara of the grahas and so forth.

Śloka 17 — Table of contents: pratyantara/sūkṣma/prāṇa sub-periods, antardaśā results within Kālacakra daśās

दशाफलं तथा प्रत्यन्त-रसूक्ष्मासुगर्भसम्भवम् । अन्तर्दशाफलं काल-चक्रजासु दशासु च ॥ १७ ॥

The results of the daśās, likewise those arising from the pratyantara, the sūkṣma, the prāṇa (asu) and the garbha; and the results of the antardaśās within the daśās born of the Kālacakra.

Śloka 18 — Table of contents: aṣṭakavarga, trikoṇa-śodhana, ekādhipatya-śodhana, piṇḍa computation

ग्रहाणामष्टको वर्गः शोधनं च त्रिकोणजम् । एकाधिपत्यशोधनं तथैव पिण्डसाधनमीरितम् ॥ १८ ॥

The eightfold varga (aṣṭakavarga) of the grahas; the reduction arising from the trikoṇa; the reduction by ekādhipatya; and likewise the computation of the piṇḍa — all this has been declared.

Śloka 19 — Table of contents: aṣṭakavarga results, āyus from aṣṭakavarga, samudāya-aṣṭakavarga results

फलानि चाष्टवर्गाणामायुरष्टकवर्गजम् । समुदायाष्टवर्गोत्थ-फलानि गदितानि च ॥ १९ ॥

And the results of the aṣṭakavargas; the longevity derived from the aṣṭakavarga; and the results arising from the aggregate (samudāya) aṣṭakavarga have been stated.

Śloka 20 — Table of contents: graha rays, Sudarśana-cakra results, Mahāpuruṣa yogas, pañca-mahābhūta results

नभोगप्रग्रहफलं सुदर्शनफलं तथा । महापुरुषयोगास्त-न्महाभूतफलानि च ॥ २० ॥

The result of the rays (reins) of the sky-going grahas; likewise the result of the Sudarśana; the Mahāpuruṣa yogas; and the results of the great elements (mahābhūtas).

Śloka 21 — Table of contents: results of the guṇas (sattva etc.); determining the chart when birth time is unknown

सत्त्वादीनां गुणानां तु फलाध्याय उदीरितः । ततोऽज्ञातजनुःकाल-वतामङ्गादिबोधनम् ॥ २१ ॥

And the chapter on the results of the guṇas beginning with sattva has been declared; then, for those whose time of birth is unknown, the ascertainment of the lagna (aṅga) and the rest.

Śloka 22 — Table of contents: pravrajyā yoga, female nativities, bodily marks, curses destroying progeny

प्रव्रज्यालक्षणं चापि स्त्रीजातकविशिष्टताम् । तदङ्गलक्ष्मजफलं शापाः सन्ततिघातकाः ॥ २२ ॥

Also the marks of renunciation (pravrajyā); the distinctive features of the nativities of women; the results born of the marks upon their bodies; and the curses that destroy progeny.

Śloka 23 — Table of contents: means of obtaining good progeny; inauspicious tithi/lagna/nakṣatra at birth

सुसुताऽवाप्त्युपायाश्च तत्रैव समुदीरिताः । जनुष्यनिष्टतिथ्यङ्ग-नक्षत्रादिविवेचनम् ॥ २३ ॥

And the means of obtaining good children have been fully declared in that very place; and the analysis of inauspicious tithi, lagna (aṅga), nakṣatra and the rest at the time of birth.

Śloka 24-25 — Table of contents concluded: the śānti procedures, prasūti-vikṛti, and the claim of more than a hundred subjects

तत्तच्छान्तिविधानं च सर्वमत्र निवेशितम् । प्रसूतिविकृतिः शान्ति-युताऽप्यभिहिता इति । परःशतास्तु विषया होराशास्त्रेऽत्र वेशिताः ॥ २५ ॥

And the prescriptions for the respective śānti rites — all of this has been placed herein. The abnormality of parturition (prasūti-vikṛti), together with its pacification, has likewise been stated. Thus more than a hundred subjects have been embodied here in this Horāśāstra.

Śloka 26 — Phala of reading or hearing the text: longevity, fame, strength

पराशरोदितं शास्त्र-मेतदादरपूर्वकम् । ये पठन्त्यपि शृण्वन्ति तेषामायुर्यशोबलम् ॥ २६ ॥

Those who read, or who hear, this śāstra declared by Parāśara with reverence — their longevity, their fame, and their strength —

Śloka 27 — Phala continued: manifold prosperity increases daily; injunction to study the text

समृद्धिश्चापि विविधा वर्धते हि दिने दिने । तस्माच्छास्त्रमदो विज्ञै-रध्येतव्यं सदा मुदा ॥ २७ ॥

— and prosperity of manifold kinds, verily increase day by day. Therefore this śāstra should always be studied with delight by the wise.
