Chapter on the Examination of Ariṣṭa (Afflictions Threatening Early Death) — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 10
The complete Chapter on the Examination of Ariṣṭa (Afflictions Threatening Early Death) chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 45 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Method: examine ariṣṭa and its cancellation before any bhāva prediction
Parāśara said: O Maitreya, first of all, from the native's lagna one should examine the ariṣṭa and likewise its cancellation (bhaṅga); only thereafter should one pronounce the results arising from the bhāvas beginning with tanu (the first).
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Duration of janmāriṣṭa; suspension of āyurdāya reckoning
For as long as twenty-four years pass from birth, for just so long janmāriṣṭa (the natal affliction) holds; during that span one should not compute the āyurdāya (the allotted span of life).
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Ariṣṭayoga: Moon in 6/8/12 aspected by malefics
The Moon placed in the sixth, the eighth, or the twelfth (riḥpha) and aspected by cruel grahas gives death to the newborn at once; but if it is [also] aspected by benefics, [death comes] within eight years.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Retrograde benefics as death-givers; benefic-void lagna
Benefics too give death just as the Moon does, if they are retrograde and aspected by cruel grahas; and when the lagna is devoid of benefics, [death comes] to the child born, within a month.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Sun, Saturn, Moon, Mars in the 5th — death of mother and brother
He in whose birth [chart] those named Sun, Saturn (Arki), Moon (Indu) and Mars (Kuja) stand in the fifth (dhī) — his mother and his brother swiftly meet destruction.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Afflicted Mars in lagna or 8th as death-giver
Mars in the lagna, aspected by or joined with malefics and not aspected by benefics, gives death; and so too when placed in the eighth and joined with Saturn or with the Sun.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Eclipse birth with Rāhu on the luminary; lagna aspected by Saturn and Mars
If at a lunar or solar eclipse Rāhu is joined with the Moon or the Sun, and the lagna is aspected by Saturn and Mars, he lives one fortnight only.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Saturn 10th, Moon 6th, Mars 7th — child dies with the mother
Saturn placed in the tenth (karma), the Moon (kalānidhi) in the sixth (śatru), and Mars (kṣitija) in the seventh — the child dies together with the mother.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Saturn lagna, Moon 8th, Jupiter 3rd
If Saturn (the son of the Sun) is in the lagna, the Moon in the eighth (nidhana), and Jupiter (Jīva) stands in the third, he goes to the mansion of Yama.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — Sun in lagna or 9th, Saturn 7th, Jupiter and Venus 11th — one month
The Sun in the lagna (horā) or in the ninth, Saturn placed in the seventh, and Jupiter and Venus in the eleventh — he lives one month.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Grahas in the 12th; the four especially destructive; aspect on the 12th cancels
In the twelfth (vyaya) all grahas are undesirable; the four — Sun, Venus, Moon and Rāhu — are destructive in particular; but by aspect [upon that house] they become breakers of the ariṣṭa.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Afflicted Moon in 9th, 7th or lagna
If the Moon, joined with a malefic, occupies the ninth (dharma), the seventh (dyūna) or the lagna, and is neither aspected nor joined by benefics, it then gives death to the child.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Birth at sandhyā, in the Moon's horā, or at gaṇḍānta
[Birth] at twilight, in the horā of the Moon, or at a gaṇḍānta tends to death; in each of these cases destruction results when the Moon and the malefics [together] occupy the kendras.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Definition of the duration of morning and evening sandhyā

With cruel grahas gone to the twelfth (vyaya) and sixth (śatru), and also to the eighth (mṛtyu) and second (dravya), the lagna being hemmed between malefics — one should declare death as a certainty.
BPHS Adhyāya 10, śloka 16

O lord among brāhmaṇas! when a waned Moon stands in the lagna and malefics are stationed in the kendras and in the eighth, the one who is born [then] meets death — there is no doubt of it.
