The Chapter on the Cancellation of Ariṣṭa — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 11
The complete The Chapter on the Cancellation of Ariṣṭa chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 10 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Transition — ariṣṭa-bhaṅga is announced; both ariṣṭa and its cancellation must be weighed before prediction
Thus has ariṣṭa been declared by me; now hear further about its cancellation (bhaṅga). Only after having examined both the ariṣṭa and its cancellation should one declare the results of the native.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — any one of Budha, Guru, Śukra in a kendra from lagna
If even a single one among Mercury (jña), Jupiter (ārya) and Venus is placed in a kendra from the lagna, it destroys the whole of the ariṣṭa, just as the sun destroys darkness.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — a single strong Jupiter in the lagna
A strong Jupiter (jīva) standing alone in the lagna destroys the whole accumulated mass of ariṣṭa — as a bow made with devotion to Śarva, the bearer of the trident, destroys the heap of sins.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — a strong lagneśa in a kendra
The lord of the lagna alone, seated in a kendra and endowed with strength, destroys the entire ariṣṭa, just as Pinākin (Śiva) destroyed Tripura.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga by pakṣa and time of birth, with aspect on the lagna
If the birth is by night in the bright fortnight and the lagna is aspected by a benefic — and, conversely, in the dark fortnight, a birth by day with the lagna aspected by a malefic — there is likewise destruction of the ariṣṭa.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Longevity — Sun in the 12th in Tulā lagna
When the Sun stands in the vyaya-bhāva (the twelfth) and the birth is in Tulā lagna, that child lives a hundred years — the child becomes long-lived.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — malefic in the 4th with Jupiter in kendra/trikoṇa
A malefic placed in the fourth from the lagna, and Jupiter placed in a kendra or trikoṇa: the child gives joy to both families, is healthy and long-lived.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — Guru–Kuja conjunction, or Jupiter's aspect on Mars; benefic for the mother
When Jupiter and Mars are conjoined, or when Mars is aspected by Jupiter, then — having destroyed the ariṣṭa without remainder — it becomes a doer of good for the mother.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Papakartari-type bhaṅga — malefic in 4th/10th hemmed by benefics; happiness of the father
When a malefic in the fourth or the tenth is situated between benefics, and benefics occupy the kendras and trikoṇas, that is a yoga producing happiness for the father.
BPHS Adhyāya 11, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — General ariṣṭa-bhaṅga — malefics hemmed by benefics, benefics in kendra/trikoṇa
When the malefics stand hemmed between benefics, and benefics occupy the kendras and trikoṇas, the ariṣṭa is destroyed at once, and the fruit arising from that bhāva does not come to pass.
