Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — which matters are read from which bhāva
श्रुतं रिष्टं च तद्भङ्गं भगवन् भवतोदितम्। अथ किं किं कुतो भावाद् विचार्यमिति कथ्यताम्॥ १॥
Maitreya said: O Bhagavan, I have heard the ariṣṭa and its cancellation, declared by you. Now let it be told — what and what is to be examined, and from which bhāva?

Śloka 2 — Significations of the first (tanu) bhāva
तनुं रूपं च ज्ञानं च वर्णं चैव बलाबलम्। प्रकृतिं सुख-दुःखं च तनुभावाद् विचिन्तयेत्॥ २॥
Parāśara said: The body, the form, knowledge, complexion (varṇa), strength and weakness, one's innate nature, and happiness and sorrow — these are to be reflected upon from the tanu-bhāva (first bhāva).

Śloka 3 — Significations of the second (dhana) bhāva
कुटुम्बं च धनं धान्यं मृत्युजालममित्रकम्। धातुरत्नादिकं सर्वं धनस्थानान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ ३॥
Family, wealth, grain, the snare of death, enemies, metals and gems and the like — all this one should inspect from the dhana-sthāna (second bhāva).

Śloka 4 — Significations of the third (duśchikya/sahaja) bhāva
विक्रमं भृत्य-भ्रात्रादि चोपदेश-प्रयाणकम्। पित्रोर्वै मरणं विद्वान् दुश्चिक्याच्च निरीक्षयेत्॥ ४॥
Valour, servants, brothers and the like, instruction received, and journeying, and indeed the death of the parents — the learned one should inspect these from the duśchikya (third bhāva).

Śloka 5 — Significations of the fourth (turya/sukha) bhāva
बान्धवानथ यानानि मातृसौख्यादिकान्यपि। निधिक्षेत्र-गृहारामादिकं तुर्याद् विचारयेत्॥ ५॥
Kinsmen, then vehicles, the happiness of the mother and such things, treasure, land, house, pleasure-garden and the like — these one should consider from the fourth (turya) bhāva.

Śloka 6 — Significations of the fifth (putra) bhāva
यन्त्रं मन्त्रं तथा विद्यां बुद्धेश्चैव प्रबन्धकम्। पुत्रराज्यापभ्रंशादीन् पश्येत् पुत्रालयाद् बुधः॥ ६॥
Yantra, mantra, learning, and the composing power of the intellect, sons, and the fall from kingship and so forth — the wise one should see these from the putra-ālaya (fifth bhāva).

Śloka 7 — Significations of the sixth (śatru/ripu) bhāva
मातुलं मृत्युशङ्काश्च शत्रूंश्चैव व्रणादिकान्। सपत्नीमातरं चापि शत्रुस्थानान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ ७॥
The maternal uncle, fears of death, enemies, wounds and the like, and also the step-mother — these one should inspect from the śatru-sthāna (sixth bhāva).

Śloka 8 — Significations of the seventh (jāyā) bhāva
जायामध्वप्रयाणं च पदानि च वणिक्-क्रियाम्। मरणं च स्वदेहस्य जायाभावान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ ८॥
The wife, travel upon the road, stations attained, trading activity, and the death of one's own body — these one should inspect from the jāyā-bhāva (seventh bhāva).

Śloka 9 — Significations of the eighth (randhra) bhāva
आयुर्मृत्युपरं चापि गुदे चैवाङ्कुरादिकम्। पूर्वापर-जनुर्वृत्तं सर्वं रन्ध्राद् विचिन्तयेत्॥ ९॥
Longevity, and further what lies beyond death, and sprouting growths and the like in the anus, and the whole course of the previous and later birth — all this one should reflect upon from the randhra (eighth bhāva).

Śloka 10 — Significations of the ninth (dharma) bhāva
धर्मं भाग्यमथो श्यालं भ्रातृ-पत्न्यादिकांस्तथा। तीर्थयात्रादिकं सर्वं धर्मस्थानान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ १०॥
Dharma, fortune, the wife's brother, the brother's wife and such kin, and pilgrimages and the like — all this one should inspect from the dharma-sthāna (ninth bhāva).

Śloka 11 — Significations of the tenth (vyoma/karma) bhāva
राज्यं चाकाशवृत्तिं च गानं च पितरं तथा। ऋणं चापि प्रवासं च व्योमस्थानान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ ११॥
Sovereignty, livelihood in the open sky, song, and the father, also debt and residence abroad — these one should inspect from the vyoma-sthāna (tenth bhāva).

Śloka 12 — Significations of the eleventh (bhava/lābha) bhāva
नानावस्तुभवस्यापि पुत्रजायादिकस्य च। आयं पशुसमृद्धिं च भवस्थानान्निरीक्षयेत्॥ १२॥
The coming into being of manifold objects, and of sons, wife and the like, income, and abundance of cattle — these one should inspect from the bhava-sthāna (eleventh bhāva).

Śloka 13 — Significations of the twelfth (vyaya) bhāva
व्ययं च वैरिवृत्तान्तं रिष्फमन्त्यादिकं तथा। व्ययाच्चैव हि जानीयादिति सर्वत्र बुद्धिमान्॥ १३॥
Expenditure, the affairs of enemies, the riṣpha and the end (death) and the like — the intelligent one should know these from the vyaya (twelfth bhāva), and thus [proceed] in every case.

Śloka 14-15 — When a bhāva's results are auspicious — benefic/own-lord association and the lord's avasthā
यो यो भावो ग्रहैः सौम्यैः स्वेशैर्युक्तोऽथवेक्षितः। युवा प्रबुद्धो राज्यस्थः कुमारो यस्य वाधिपः॥ १४॥ तद्दृष्टिवशतो ज्ञेयं तद्भावजफलं शुभम्।
Whichever bhāva is conjoined with or aspected by benefic grahas or by its own lord, or whose lord is in the yuvā (youth), prabuddha (awakened), rājya (royal) or kumāra (boyhood) avasthā — by force of that aspect the fruit born of that bhāva is to be known as auspicious.

Śloka 15-16 — When a bhāva's results are destroyed — trika-lords, no aspect, and bad avasthās
यद्यद्भावपतिर्नष्ट-त्रिकेशाद्यैश्च संयुतः॥ १५॥ भावं न वीक्षते सम्यग् ग्रहः सुप्तोऽथवा मृतः। स्थविरः पीडितो वापि, नष्टं भावफलं वदेत्॥ १६॥
But whichever bhāva's lord is joined with the naṣṭa [state] and with the lords of the trika and the rest, or when the graha does not properly aspect the bhāva, or is asleep (supta), dead (mṛta), aged (sthavira) or afflicted — then one should declare the fruit of that bhāva destroyed.
