Chapter on the Results of the First (Tanu / Body) Bhāva — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 13
The complete Chapter on the Results of the First (Tanu / Body) Bhāva chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 16 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Lagneśa in kendra/koṇa vs. in trika with pāpa — bodily comfort
The lord of the tanu (lagna), placed in a kendra or a koṇa, gives unceasing comfort to the body. That very same lord, gone to a trika house and joined with a pāpa, robs bodily comfort.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Lagneśa combust / nīca / in enemy sign; benefics in kendra-trikoṇa cure disease
The lord of the tanu, when set (combust), or placed in its nīca rāśi or in an enemy's rāśi, causes excessive disease. Benefic grahas placed in kendras and trikoṇas take away all diseases.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Lagna or Moon afflicted by pāpas without benefic aspect
When the lagna, or the Moon, is joined with or aspected by pāpa grahas and is devoid of a benefic aspect, the native has no comfort of body.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Benefic vs. pāpa in the lagna — beauty and bodily comfort
With a benefic in the lagna the native is comely; but with a pāpa there he is ill-favoured. When the tanu bhāva is joined with or aspected by benefic grahas, bodily comfort is quite certain.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Lagneśa, Budha, Guru or Śukra in kendra/trikoṇa
If the lord of the aṅga (lagna), or Budha, or Jīva (Jupiter), or Bhṛgu (Venus) occupies a kendra or a trikoṇa, the native is long-lived, intelligent, wealthy, and a favourite of the king.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Lagneśa in a cara rāśi aspected by a benefic
When the lord of the lagna is placed in a cara (movable) rāśi and is aspected by a benefic graha, the native is renowned and prosperous, a great enjoyer, and endowed with a well-nourished body.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Guru, Śukra or Budha with the Moon in lagna or a kendra
If Jīva (Jupiter), or Śukra, or Budha, joined with the Moon, is in the lagna, or likewise placed in a kendra from the lagna, the native is endowed with the marks of royalty.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Mars and Saturn in Meṣa, Vṛṣabha or Siṃha lagna — umbilical cord coiling
When the lagna is Aja (Meṣa), Vṛṣabha, or Siṃha, and that lagna is accompanied by Āra (Mars) together with Sūryaja (Saturn), the child is born with the umbilical cord wound about the limb of the body corresponding to the aṃśa of that rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Twins — Sun in a quadruped rāśi, strong planets in dual rāśis
When the Sun occupies a quadruped rāśi and the other sky-travelling grahas, being strong, occupy dual-natured rāśis, the birth attains the condition of twins.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — Sun and Moon in one rāśi and one aṃśa — nursing by others
When the Sun and the Moon stand in one and the same rāśi and are furnished with one and the same aṃśa, the child is nourished for three months by three mothers, and thereafter by his father and his brother.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Extend the same judgement from the Moon; transition to body marks
In just this same manner the results should always be declared by the wise from the Moon as well. Now hear about wounds, marks and the like upon the limbs of the native.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Body parts assigned to the bhāvas in the first drekkāṇa of the lagna
The bhāvas beginning with the tanu are declared thus when the lagna falls in the first drekkāṇa: the head, the two eyes, the two ears, the two nostrils, and the two cheeks.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Chin and mouth; right-left order; the second drekkāṇa
And the chin and the mouth; reckoned in order from the tanu bhāva, these parts run to the right side and to the left. But when the lagna is in the second drekkāṇa, the order is: the throat, the two shoulders, the two arms, and the two sides.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Heart, flanks, navel; the third drekkāṇa begins
And the two sides of the heart, likewise the two flanks, and the navel — so it has been declared by the wise. In the same way, when the lagna is in the third drekkāṇa: the bladder, the generative organ, and the anus,
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Remaining limbs of the third drekkāṇa; forward and backward reckoning
the pair of testicles, the two thighs, the two knees, likewise the two calves, and the feet — these are the limbs, reckoned in front of and behind the tanu bhāva.
BPHS Adhyāya 13, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Wound vs. mere mark on the limb, by pāpa or śubha association
In a limb that holds a pāpa there is a wound; and when those cruel grahas are accompanied by Budha, that wound is certain. But if that same limb also holds a benefic, or is aspected by a benefic, one should declare a mere mark [and not a wound]. [The limb meant is the one assigned to that bhāva by the three tables of vv. 12–15, which are read off the dreṣkāṇa the lagna occupies.]
