Śloka 1 — Opening address to Maitreya; 8th lord in a kendra gives long life

Now I shall declare the fruits pertaining to the house of longevity — listen now, O sage (Maitreya)! The lord of death (i.e. the lord of the 8th bhāva), when placed in a kendra, is held to be a bestower of long life.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — 8th lord with pāpagrahas in the 8th, and lagna lord likewise, gives short life

The lord of the house of longevity (the 8th), stationed in that very house of longevity together with malefics, makes the native short-lived; and so too the lagna lord when likewise stationed there.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Longevity to be judged likewise from Saturn and the 10th lord

In the same way the consideration is to be made through Saturn, by the discerning, with sound reasoning; and likewise reflection on longevity is to be made through the lord of the karma-bhāva (the 10th).

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — Dīrghāyu-yoga: 6th and 12th lords in the 6th/12th, or in lagna or the 8th

The lord of the sixth placed in the sixth or in the twelfth, and the lord of the twelfth in the sixth or the twelfth — or else stationed in the lagna or in the eighth — bestows long life.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Dīrghāyu-yoga: lagna lord and 8th lord in own sign / own aṃśa / friend's house

In its own place, or in its own aṃśa, or with a friendly lord, or in a friend's house — the lagna lord, and again the lord of the eighth, verily makes (the native) long-lived.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Dīrghāyu-yoga: lords of 1, 8, 10 and Saturn in kendra/koṇa/11th

Śloka 7 — Very strong lagna lord aspected by benefics in kendras

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Lagna lord exalted, Moon in the 11th, Jupiter in the 8th

When the lagna lord is in its own exaltation rāśi, the Moon is joined to the lābha (11th), and Jupiter has gone to the randhra-sthāna (the 8th), there is long life — no doubt of it.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Directive: judge longevity by whichever yoga is strongest

Among these (yogas), whichever is the strongest — in accordance with that the foremost knower of destiny, the learned one, having reflected in many ways, should declare the longevity of the native.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Alpāyu-yoga: 8th lord in a kendra with a weak lagna lord — 20 to 32 years

Śloka 11 — Alpāyu: 8th lord debilitated, malefics in the 8th, weak lagna lord

When the lord of the randhra (8th) is in its sign of debilitation, the randhra itself is joined by malefic grahas, and the lagna lord is weak, the native is assuredly of very short life.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Death immediately at birth: malefics with 8th lord, in the 8th and the 12th

When the lord of the randhra (8th) is conjoined with malefics, the randhra itself is joined by malefic grahas, and the vyaya (12th) too is joined by cruel grahas, death occurs the moment (the child) is born.

BPHS Adhyāya 20, śloka 12
