अथ नवम (भाग्य) भावफलाध्यायः

Śloka 1 — Opening; strong 9th lord in the 9th makes one fortunate
अथाकर्णय मैत्रेय ! भाग्यभावफलं पुनः । भाग्येशे सबले भाग्ये भाग्यवाञ्जायते नरः ॥ १ ॥
Now hear next, O Maitreya, the results of the bhāgya-bhāva (the 9th). When the lord of the 9th, being strong, is placed in the 9th itself, the man is born fortunate.

Śloka 2 — Jupiter in 9th + its lord in kendra + strong lagna lord = great fortune
धर्मस्थानगते जीवे तदीशे केन्द्रसंस्थिते । लग्नेशे बलसंयुक्ते बहुभाग्ययुतो भवेत् ॥ २ ॥
When Jupiter (jīva) occupies the dharma-sthāna (the 9th), the lord of that bhāva is placed in a kendra, and the lagna lord is endowed with strength, he becomes possessed of abundant fortune.

Śloka 3 — Fortunate father — 9th lord with Venus in the 9th, Jupiter in a kendra
भाग्येशे बलसंयुक्ते भाग्ये भृगुसमन्विते । जीवे केन्द्रगते लग्नात् पिता भाग्यसमन्वितः ॥ ३ ॥
When the strong lord of the 9th is in the 9th together with Venus (Bhṛgu), and Jupiter is in a kendra from the lagna, the father is endowed with good fortune.

Śloka 4 — Poor father — Mars in 2nd/4th from the 9th, 9th lord debilitated
भाग्यस्थानाद् द्वितीये ना सुखे भौमसमन्विते । भाग्येशे नीचराशिस्थे पिता निर्धन एव वै ॥ ४ ॥
When the 2nd or the 4th (sukha) counted from the 9th is occupied by Mars, and the lord of the 9th stands in its nīca rāśi, the father is indeed destitute.

Śloka 5 — Long-lived father — 9th lord in exact ucca, Jupiter in the 9th's aṃśa, Venus in a kendra
भाग्येशे परमोच्चस्थे भाग्यांशे जीवसंयुते । लग्नाच्चतुष्टये शुक्रे दीर्घजीवी पिता भवेत् ॥ ५ ॥
When the lord of the 9th stands in its exact point of exaltation (paramocca), the navāṃśa of the 9th is joined by Jupiter, and Venus is in a kendra (catuṣṭaya) from the lagna, the father is long-lived.

Śloka 6 — Father with vehicles / king-like — 9th lord in a kendra aspected by Jupiter
भाग्येशे केन्द्रभावस्थे गुरुणा च निरीक्षिते । तत्पिता वाहनैर्युक्तो राजा वा तत्समो भवेत् ॥ ६ ॥
When the lord of the 9th is placed in a kendra bhāva and is aspected by Jupiter, that man's father is possessed of vehicles, and is a king or the equal of one.

Śloka 7 — Wealthy, famous father — exchange between 9th and 10th lords with benefic aspect
भाग्येशे कर्मभावस्थे कर्मेशे भाग्यराशिगे । सौम्येक्षिते धनाढ्यश्च कीर्त्तिमांस्तत्पिता भवेत् ॥ ७ ॥
When the lord of the 9th is placed in the karma-bhāva (the 10th) and the lord of the 10th is in the rāśi of the 9th, and this is aspected by a benefic, that man's father is wealthy and renowned.

Śloka 8 — Pitṛbhakti-yoga — Sun in paramocca aṃśa, 9th lord in the 11th
परमोच्चांशगे सूर्ये भाग्येशे लाभसंस्थिते । धर्मिष्ठो नृपवात्सल्यः पितृसेवी भवेन्नरः ॥ ८ ॥
When the Sun occupies the aṃśa of its highest exaltation and the lord of the 9th is placed in the 11th (lābha), the man becomes most righteous, cherished by the king, and devoted to the service of his father.

Śloka 9 — Pitṛbhakti-yoga — Sun in a koṇa, 9th lord in the 7th with/aspected by Jupiter
लग्नात् त्रिकोणगे सूर्ये भाग्येशे सप्तमस्थिते । गुरुणा सहिते दृष्टे पितृभक्ति-समन्वितः ॥ ९ ॥
When the Sun is in a trikoṇa from the lagna and the lord of the 9th stands in the 7th, joined with or aspected by Jupiter, he is endowed with devotion to his father.

Śloka 10 — Fortune, vehicles and fame after the 32nd year — 2nd/9th lord exchange
भाग्येशे धनभावस्थे धनेशे भाग्यराशिगे । द्वात्रिंशात्परतो भाग्यं वाहनं कीर्तिसम्भवः ॥ १० ॥
When the lord of the 9th is placed in the dhana-bhāva (the 2nd) and the lord of the 2nd is in the rāśi of the 9th, then after the thirty-second year come fortune, a vehicle, and the arising of fame.

Śloka 11 — Pitṛ-śatrutva yoga — lagna lord and 6th lord together in the 9th
लग्नेशे भाग्यराशिस्थे षष्ठेशोऽपि च तत्रगे । अन्योन्यवैरं ब्रुवते जनकः कुत्सितो भवेत् ॥ ११ ॥
When the lagna lord stands in the rāśi of the 9th and the lord of the 6th also goes there, they declare mutual enmity (between father and son); and the father is of contemptible character.

Śloka 12 — Bhikṣāśana-yoga — very weak 3rd lord with 10th lord, 9th lord debilitated or combust
कर्माधिपेन सहितो विक्रमेशोऽतिनिर्बलः । भाग्येशो नीचगो वाऽस्तो योगो भिक्षाशनो मतः ॥ १२ ॥
When the lord of the 3rd (vikrama), being exceedingly weak, is joined with the lord of the 10th, and the lord of the 9th is in its nīca or is combust, this is held to be the yoga of one who lives on begged food.

Śloka 13 — Pitṛmaraṇa — father's death before the native's birth (condition)
षष्ठाष्टम-व्यये भानौ रन्ध्रेशे भाग्यसंयुते । व्ययेशे लग्नराशिस्थे पञ्चमस्थे तु षष्ठपे ॥ १३ ॥
When the Sun is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the lord of the 8th (randhra) is joined to the 9th, the lord of the 12th stands in the rāśi of the lagna, and the lord of the 6th is in the 5th —

Śloka 14 — Result of v.13; and Sun in 8th with 8th lord in 9th (condition)
जातस्य जननात् पूर्वं जनकस्य मृतिर्भवेत् । रन्ध्रस्थानगते सूर्ये रन्ध्रेशे भाग्यगे सति ॥ १४ ॥
— the father's death occurs before the native's own birth. When the Sun occupies the randhra-sthāna (the 8th) and the lord of the 8th is in the 9th —

Śloka 15 — Result of v.14b (father dies in native's 1st year); 12th lord in 9th, 9th lord in nīca aṃśa (condition)
जातस्य प्रथमाब्दे तु पितुर्मरणमादिशेत् । व्ययेशे भाग्यराशिस्थे नीचांशे भाग्यनायके ॥ १५ ॥
— one should declare the father's death in the native's first year. When the lord of the 12th stands in the rāśi of the 9th and the lord of the 9th is in a nīca aṃśa —

Śloka 16 — Result of v.15b (3rd or 16th year); lagna lord in 8th, 8th lord with Sun (condition)
तृतीये षोडशे वर्षे जनकस्य मृतिर्भवेत् । लग्नेशे नाशराशिस्थे रन्ध्रेशे भानुसंयुते ॥ १६ ॥
— the father's death occurs in the third or the sixteenth year. When the lagna lord stands in the rāśi of destruction (the 8th) and the lord of the 8th is joined with the Sun —

Śloka 17 — Result of v.16b (2nd or 12th year); Rāhu in 8th from 9th, Sun in 9th from 9th (condition)
द्वितीये द्वादशे वर्षे पितुर्मरणमादिशेत् । भाग्याद्रन्ध्रगते राहौ भाग्याद् भाग्यगते रवौ ॥ १७ ॥
— one should declare the father's death in the second or the twelfth year. When Rāhu occupies the 8th counted from the 9th, and the Sun occupies the 9th counted from the 9th —

Śloka 18 — Result of v.17b (16th or 18th year); Sun with Rāhu, Saturn in 9th from the Moon (condition)
षोडशेऽष्टादशे वर्षे जनकस्य मृतिर्भवेत् । राहुणा सहिते सूर्ये चन्द्राद् भाग्यगते शनौ ॥ १८ ॥
— the father's death occurs in the sixteenth or the eighteenth year. When the Sun is joined with Rāhu and Saturn occupies the 9th from the Moon —

Śloka 19 — Result of v.18b (7th or 19th year); 9th lord in 12th, 12th lord in 9th (condition)
सप्तमैकोनविंशाब्दे तातस्य मरणं ध्रुवम् । भाग्येशे व्ययराशिस्थे व्ययेशे भाग्यराशिगे ॥ १९ ॥
— in the seventh or the nineteenth year the father's death is certain. When the lord of the 9th stands in the rāśi of the 12th and the lord of the 12th is in the rāśi of the 9th —

Śloka 20 — Result of v.19b (44th year); Moon in the Sun's aṃśa, lagna lord with the 8th (condition)
वर्षे वेदार्णवमिते पितुर्मरणमादिशेत् । रव्यंशे च स्थिते चन्द्रे लग्नेशे रन्ध्रसंयुते ॥ २० ॥
— one should declare the father's death in the year measured by veda-arṇava (forty-four). When the Moon is placed in the Sun's aṃśa (the Siṃha navāṃśa) and the lord of the lagna is joined to the 8th —

Śloka 21 — Result of v.20b (35th or 41st year); Sun as lord of the pitṛ-sthāna with Saturn and Mars (condition)
पञ्चत्रिंशेवैकचत्वारिंशद्वर्षे मृतिः पितुः । षितृस्थानाधिपे सूर्ये मन्दभौमसमन्विते ॥ २१ ॥
— the father's death is in the thirty-fifth or the forty-first year. When the Sun, being lord of the pitṛ-sthāna (which the commentary takes as the tenth house), is joined with Saturn or with Mars —

Śloka 22 — Result of v.21b (50th year); Sun in 7th from 9th, Rāhu in 7th from the 3rd (condition)
पञ्चाशद्-वत्सरे प्राप्ते जनकस्य मृतिः भवेत् । भाग्यात् सप्तमगे सूर्ये राहौ भ्रातुर्नगस्थिते ॥ २२ ॥
— when the fiftieth year is reached, the father's death occurs. When the Sun occupies the 7th from the 9th, and Rāhu is placed in the 'naga' (seventh) from the house of the brother (the 3rd) —

Śloka 23 — Result of v.22b (6th or 25th year); Saturn in 7th from the 8th, Sun in 7th from Saturn (condition)
षष्ठे वा पञ्चविंशेऽब्दे पितुर्मरणमादिशेत् । रन्ध्राज्जामित्रगे मन्दे मन्दाज्जामित्रगे रवौ ॥ २३ ॥
— one should declare the father's death in the sixth or the twenty-fifth year. When Saturn occupies the jāmitra (the 7th) from the 8th, and the Sun occupies the jāmitra from Saturn —

Śloka 24 — Result of v.23b (30th, 21st or 26th year); 9th lord debilitated, its dispositor in the 9th (condition)
त्रिंशेऽब्द एकविंशे षड्-विंशे वा निधनं पितुः । भाग्येशे नीचराशिस्थे तदीशे भाग्यराशिगे ॥ २४ ॥
— the father's death is in the thirtieth, the twenty-first, or the twenty-sixth year. When the lord of the 9th stands in its nīca rāśi and the lord of that (nīca) rāśi is in the rāśi of the 9th —

Śloka 25 — Result of v.24b (26th or 33rd year); Venus in paramocca aṃśa with the 9th lord (condition)
षड्विंशे वा त्रयस्त्रिंशे पितुर्मरणमादिशेत् । परमोच्चांशगे शुक्रे भाग्येशेन समन्विते ॥ २५ ॥
— one should declare the father's death in the twenty-sixth or the thirty-third year. When Venus occupies the aṃśa of its highest exaltation and is joined by the lord of the 9th —

Śloka 26 — Great fortune — Venus/9th-lord combination plus Saturn in the 3rd; Jupiter in the 9th, its lord in a kendra (condition)
भ्रातृस्थाने शनियुते बहुभाग्याधिपो भवेत् । गुरुणा संयुते भाग्ये तदीशे केन्द्रराशिगे ॥ २६ ॥
— and the bhrātṛ-sthāna (the 3rd) is occupied by Saturn, he becomes master of abundant fortune. When the 9th is joined by Jupiter and its lord is in a kendra rāśi —

Śloka 27 — Result of v.26b (great fortune after age 20); Mercury in paramocca aṃśa, 9th lord in the 9th (condition)
विंशाद्वर्षात्परं चैव बहुभाग्यं विनिर्दिशेत् । परमोच्चांशगे सौम्ये भाग्येशे भाग्यराशिगे ॥ २७ ॥
— one should indeed declare abundant fortune from beyond the twentieth year. When Mercury (saumya) occupies the aṃśa of its highest exaltation and the lord of the 9th is in the rāśi of the 9th —

Śloka 28 — Result of v.27b (great fortune after age 36); lagna lord in the 9th, 9th lord in the lagna (condition)
षट्त्रिंशाच्च परं चैव बहुभाग्यं विनिर्दिशेत् । लग्नेशे भाग्यराशिस्थे भाग्येशे लग्नसंयुते ॥ २८ ॥
— one should declare abundant fortune from beyond the thirty-sixth year. When the lagna lord stands in the rāśi of the 9th and the lord of the 9th is joined to the lagna —

Śloka 29 — Result of v.28b (wealth and vehicles when Jupiter is in the 7th); Rāhu in 9th from 9th, 9th lord in the 8th (condition)
गुरुणा संयुते द्यूने लाभः स्याद्धनयानयोः । भाग्याद् भाग्यगते राहौ भाग्येशे निधनं गते ॥ २९ ॥
— and the dyūna (the 7th) is joined by Jupiter, there is gain of wealth and of vehicles. When Rāhu occupies the 9th counted from the 9th, and the lord of the 9th has gone to the 8th (nidhana) —

Śloka 30 — Daurbhāgya — result of v.29b (loss of fortune); Saturn with the Moon in the 9th (condition)
अथवा नीचराशिस्थे भाग्यहीनो भवेन्नरः । भाग्यस्थानगते मन्दे शशिना च समन्विते ॥ ३० ॥
— or else, (with Rāhu still so placed,) if it (the 9th lord) stands in its nīca rāśi, the man becomes bereft of fortune. When Saturn occupies the bhāgya-sthāna (the 9th) joined with the Moon —

Śloka 31 — Result of v.30b (a beggar); closing rule — judge the 9th from the 9th lord and the lagna lord
लग्नेशे नीचराशिस्थे भिक्षाशी च नरो भवेत् । ज्ञेयमित्थं फलं भाग्येशाङ्गेशावस्थितेर्वशात् ॥ ३१ ॥
— and the lagna lord stands in its nīca rāśi, the man becomes one who eats begged food. Thus is the result to be known, according to the disposition of the lord of the 9th and the lord of the body (the lagna lord).
