अथ दशम (कर्म) भावफलाध्यायः

Śloka 1 — Invocation / transition to the tenth bhāva

अतः परं तु श्रोतव्यं त्वया कर्मभवं फलम् । चतुर्मुखादिभिर्यच्च प्रोक्तं लोकहितैषिभिः ॥ १ ॥

Hereafter you [Maitreya] should hear the results arising from the karma-bhāva (tenth), which were declared by the four-faced one (Brahmā) and the others, who desire the welfare of the world.

Śloka 2 — Karmeśa strong in svakṣetra / own aṃśa / ucca

स्वराश्यंशोच्चगे पूर्णबलोपेते तु कर्मपे । पितृसौख्यान्वितो जातः पुण्यकर्मा सुकीर्तिमान् ॥ २ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva, endowed with full strength, occupies his own rāśi, his own aṃśa, or his ucca, the native is possessed of the happiness of a father, is a doer of meritorious deeds, and is of good renown.

Śloka 3 — Weak karmeśa; Rāhu in kendra/koṇa

कर्माधिपो बलोनश्चेत् कर्मवैकल्यमादिशेत् । राहुः केन्द्रत्रिकोणस्थो ज्योतिष्टोमादियागकृत् ॥ ३ ॥

If the lord of the karma-bhāva is deficient in strength, one should declare a deficiency of action (karma). If Rāhu stands in a kendra or a trikoṇa, the native performs sacrifices such as the Jyotiṣṭoma.

Śloka 4 — Karmeśa with benefics in an auspicious bhāva

सौम्ययुक्ते शुभस्थाने संस्थिते कर्मपे सति । वाणिज्यतो राजतो वा लाभो हानिर्विपर्यये ॥ ४ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva is joined with benefics and placed in an auspicious bhāva, there is gain through trade or through the king; in the contrary case, loss.

Śloka 5 — Tenth bhāva and its lord afflicted by pāpagrahas

दशमे पापसंयुक्ते कर्मपे पापसमन्विते । दुष्कृतिं लभते मर्त्यः स्वजनानां विदूषकः ॥ ५ ॥

When the tenth is joined with malefics and the lord of the karma-bhāva is likewise accompanied by malefics, the mortal obtains evil deeds and is a reviler of his own people.

Śloka 6 — Karmeśa in the eighth with Rāhu

कर्मेशे नाशराशिस्थे सैंहिकेय-समन्विते । जनद्वेषी महामूर्खो दुष्कृतिं लभते नरः ॥ ६ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva stands in the rāśi of destruction (the eighth) and is joined with the son of Siṃhikā (Rāhu), the man is a hater of people, a great fool, and obtains evil deeds.

Śloka 7 — Karmeśa in the seventh with Saturn/Mars; afflicted dhaneśa

कर्मेशे द्यूनराशिस्थे मन्दभौमसमन्विते । धनेशे पापसंयुक्ते शिश्नोदरपरायणः ॥ ७ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva is placed in the seventh rāśi together with Saturn and Mars, and the lord of wealth is joined with malefics, the native is devoted to the genitals and the belly (i.e. given over to lust and gluttony).

Śloka 8 — Śobhana yoga — karmeśa exalted with Jupiter, bhāgyeśa in the 10th

तुङ्गराशिं समाश्रित्य कर्मेशे गुरुसंयुते । भाग्येशे कर्मराशिस्थे मानैश्वर्यप्रतापवान् ॥ ८ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva, having resorted to his exaltation rāśi, is joined with Jupiter, and the lord of the ninth stands in the karma-rāśi, the native possesses honour, lordship and majesty.

Śloka 9 — Śobhana yoga — exchange/kendra placement of lābheśa and karmeśa

लाभेशे कर्मराशिस्थे कर्मेशे लग्नसंयुते । तावुभौ केन्द्रगौ वापि सुखजीवनभाग् भवेत् ॥ ९ ॥

When the lord of the eleventh stands in the karma-rāśi and the lord of the karma-bhāva is joined to the lagna, or when both of them are in kendras, one becomes a partaker of a happy life.

Śloka 10 — Śobhana yoga — karmeśa in Pisces with Jupiter

कर्मेशे जलसंयुक्ते मीने गुरुसमन्विते । वस्त्राभरणसौख्यादि लभते नात्र संशयः ॥ १० ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva is in watery Pisces and is accompanied by Jupiter, the native obtains garments, ornaments, comforts and the like — there is no doubt in this.

Śloka 11 — Aśobhana yoga — Sun in the 11th with Rāhu, Mars and Saturn

लाभस्थानगते सूर्ये राहुभौमसमन्विते । रविपुत्रेण संयुक्ते कर्मच्छेत्ता भवेन्नरः ॥ ११ ॥

When the Sun has gone to the house of gain (the eleventh), accompanied by Rāhu and Mars and joined with the son of the Sun (Saturn), the man becomes a destroyer of his own work.

Śloka 12 — Satkarma yoga — Jupiter with Venus in Pisces, strong lagneśa, exalted Moon

मीने जीवे भृगुयुते लग्नेशे बलसंयुते । स्वोच्चराशिगते चन्द्रे सम्यग् ज्ञानार्थवान् भवेत् ॥ १२ ॥

When Jupiter is in Pisces joined with Venus, the lord of the lagna is endowed with strength, and the Moon has gone to her own exaltation rāśi, one becomes rightly possessed of knowledge and wealth.

Śloka 13 — Satkarma yoga — karmeśa in 11th, lābheśa in lagna, Venus in the 10th

कर्मेशे लाभराशिस्थे लाभेशे लग्नसंस्थिते । कर्मराशिस्थिते शुक्रे रत्नवान् स नरो भवेत् ॥ १३ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva stands in the rāśi of gain (the eleventh), the lord of the eleventh is placed in the lagna, and Venus is situated in the karma-rāśi, that man becomes possessed of gems.

Śloka 14 — Satkarma yoga — karmeśa in kendra/koṇa or ucca, with or aspected by Jupiter

केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे कर्मनाथे स्वोच्चसमाश्रिते । गुरुणा सहिते दृष्टे सत्कर्मसहितो भवेत् ॥ १४ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva occupies a kendra or trikoṇa, or has resorted to his own exaltation, and is joined with or aspected by Jupiter, one becomes engaged in good deeds.

Śloka 15 — Satkarma yoga — karmeśa with lagneśa in the lagna, Moon in kendra/koṇa

कर्मेशे लग्नभावस्थे लग्नेशेन समन्विते । केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे चन्द्रे सत्कर्मनिरतो भवेत् ॥ १५ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva stands in the lagna-bhāva joined with the lord of the lagna, and the Moon occupies a kendra or trikoṇa, one becomes devoted to good deeds.

Śloka 16 — Asatkarma yoga — Saturn in the 10th with a debilitated graha

कर्मस्थानगते मन्दे नीचखेचरसंयुते । कर्मेशे पापसंयुक्ते कर्महीनो भवेन्नरः ॥ १६ ॥

When Saturn has gone to the house of karma joined with a graha in nīca, and the lord of the karma-bhāva is joined with malefics, the man becomes devoid of action.

Śloka 17 — Asatkarma yoga — exchange of karmeśa and randhreśa

कर्मेशे रन्ध्रराशिस्थे रन्ध्रेशे कर्मसंस्थिते । पापग्रहेण संयुक्ते दुष्कर्मनिरतो भवेत् ॥ १७ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva stands in the randhra-rāśi (the eighth) and the lord of the eighth is placed in the karma-bhāva, and there is conjunction with a malefic graha, one becomes devoted to evil deeds.

Śloka 18 — Asatkarma yoga — karmeśa debilitated, 10th and 10th-from-10th afflicted

कर्मेशे नीचराशिस्थे कर्मस्थे पापखेचरे । कर्मभात् कर्मगे पापे कर्मवैकल्यमादिशेत् ॥ १८ ॥

When the lord of the karma-bhāva stands in his nīca rāśi, a malefic graha stands in the karma-bhāva, and a malefic occupies the tenth counted from the karma-bhāva, one should declare a deficiency of action.

Śloka 19 — Kīrtimat yoga — Moon in the 10th, its lord in a trine to it

कर्मस्थानगते चन्द्रे तदीशे तत्त्रिकोणगे । लग्नेशे केन्द्रभावस्थे सत्कीर्तिसहितो भवेत् ॥ १९ ॥

When the Moon has gone to the house of karma, its lord occupies a trikoṇa from that, and the lord of the lagna stands in a kendra-bhāva, one becomes possessed of good fame.

Śloka 20 — Kīrtimat yoga — lagneśa in the 10th, strong karmeśa aspected by Jupiter

लग्नेशे कर्मभावस्थे कर्मेशे बलसंयुते । देवेन्द्रगुरुणा दृष्टे सत्कीर्तिसहितो भवेत् ॥ २० ॥

When the lord of the lagna stands in the karma-bhāva, the lord of the karma-bhāva is endowed with strength, and it is aspected by the preceptor of the lord of the gods (Jupiter), one becomes possessed of good fame.

Śloka 21 — Kīrtimat yoga — karmeśa in the 9th, lagneśa in the 10th, Moon in the 5th

कर्मस्थानाधिपे भाग्ये लग्नेशे कर्मसंयुते । लग्नात्पञ्चमगे चन्द्रे ख्यातकीर्तिः प्रजायते ॥ २१ ॥

When the lord of the house of karma is in the ninth, the lord of the lagna is joined to the karma-bhāva, and the Moon occupies the fifth from the lagna, one is born of celebrated renown.

Śloka 22 — Concluding summary of the tenth bhāva

एतत्समासतः कर्मभावजं गदितं फलम् । ज्ञेयमन्यत्तु लग्नेश-कर्मेशाश्रयती बुधैः ॥ २२ ॥

Thus, in brief, the result arising from the karma-bhāva has been told. The rest is to be known by the wise from the mutual dependence of the lord of the lagna and the lord of the karma-bhāva.
