Chapter Expounding the Exact (sphuṭa) Aspect, beginning with Guru — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 27

The complete Chapter Expounding the Exact (sphuṭa) Aspect, beginning with Guru chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 14 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — asking for the exact (sphuṭa) aspect of the grahas

O great ṛṣi! The wonderful bhāva-born results of the grahas have been declared. Now, O Lord, be gracious and tell me of their exact (sphuṭa) aspect.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — General aspect — the four aspect-classes and their quarter-strengths

The grahas aspect the tryaṃśa [the 3rd and 10th], the trikoṇa [the 5th and 9th], the caturasra [the 4th and 8th], and the seventh — with an increase of one quarter [at each successive class]; and they give their results in exactly that measure.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — All grahas aspect the 7th fully; the special full aspects of Śani, Guru (Jīva) and Kuja

All [the grahas] aspect the seventh [fully]; and further Śani, Jīva (Guru) and Kuja (Maṅgala) aspect — with special [i.e. full] force — respectively the 3rd-and-10th, the trikoṇa [5th and 9th], and the 4th-and-8th.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — Distinction between general (sāmānya) aspect by house and exact (sphuṭa) aspect by longitude

This aspect, [reckoned] by the difference of position [i.e. by bhāva], has been stated by the wise as the general one; but that [aspect derived] from the difference of the exact (spaṣṭa) longitudes of the two grahas is held to be the sphuṭa [exact] aspect.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi computation — the case where the difference exceeds six rāśis

Having subtracted the aspecting graha (draṣṭṛ) from the aspected one (dṛśya): if the remainder exceeds six rāśis, subtract it from the diś [= ten rāśis]; the resulting degrees, divided by two, become the sphuṭa aspect.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi — the cases of difference exceeding five and four rāśis

If [the difference] exceeds śara [= five] rāśis, then, leaving aside the rāśis, the degrees doubled are indeed that sphuṭa [aspect]. If it exceeds veda [= four] rāśis, subtract [it] from bhūta [= five rāśis]; the [remaining] degrees are the aspect. If it exceeds three rāśis —

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi — the cases of difference exceeding three and two rāśis

— subtracting [it] from the arṇava [= four rāśis], [the remainder] divided by two, and the quotient increased by thirty: that is it [the aspect]. If [the difference] exceeds kara [= two] rāśis, then, leaving aside the rāśis, the degrees increased by tithi [= fifteen], likewise [is the aspect].

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 7

Śloka 7½ (8a) — Sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi — the case of difference exceeding one rāśi; and the null case

If [the difference] exceeds rūpa [= one] rāśi, then, leaving aside the rāśi, the degrees divided [by two] — that too is it.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 7½ (8a)

Śloka 8 — Closing of the general method

Thus has the method for computing the aspect in general been handed down.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Special sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi rules for Śani, Kuja and Guru; Śani's ninth-rāśi and first-rāśi cases

In the aspect of Manda (Śani), Kṣitija (Maṅgala) and Jīva (Guru) a special rule is to be understood. For Śani: when the remainder measures aṅka [= nine] rāśis, the bhogya degrees [doubled]; and again, when [it measures] one rāśi —

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Śani's sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi — the one-, two- and eight-rāśi cases

— the bhukta degrees multiplied by two. In two rāśis, khaṣaṭ [= sixty] diminished by half the degrees. In eight rāśis, the bhukta degrees increased by thirty: that becomes the sphuṭa aspect.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — Maṅgala's (Bhauma's) special sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi

For Bhauma (Maṅgala): when the remainder is in the third or seventh rāśi, sixty diminished by the elapsed (bhukta) minutes-and-degrees. In the second rāśi, one-and-a-half times the degrees increased by tithi [= fifteen]. In the aṅga [= sixth] rāśi it is deemed full.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Guru's special sphuṭa-dṛṣṭi

For Guru: in the third or seventh rāśi, half the bhukta degrees increased by pañca-abdhi [= forty-five]. In the gaja-abdhi [= eighth and fourth] rāśi, the aspect is sixty diminished by twice the bhukta degrees.

BPHS Adhyāya 27, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Conclusion — apply the sphuṭa aspect to bhāva results

In this way arises the exact (sphuṭa) aspect of the Sun and the rest, as held by the good. And the result of the bhāvas should be declared by the knowledgeable in accordance with it.
