Śloka 1 — Transition — Parāśara announces the results of the aprakāśa grahas
सूर्यादीनां तु सप्तानां ग्रहाणां भावजं फलम्। गदितञ्चाप्रकाशानामथ मैत्रेय ! तद् ब्रुवे ॥ १ ॥
The bhāva-born results of the seven grahas beginning with the Sun have been stated. Now, O Maitreya, I shall declare that (same matter) for the aprakāśa (invisible/shadowy) grahas.

Śloka 2 — Dhūma in the 1st bhāva (mūrti/lagna)
शूरो विमलनेत्रांशः सुस्तब्धो निर्घृणः खलः। मूर्तिस्थे खलु धूमाख्ये गाढरोषो नरः सदा ॥ २ ॥
When the one named Dhūma stands in the mūrti (first) bhāva, the person is brave, of clear eyes, very stiff (haughty), pitiless, wicked, and always of dense (violent) anger.

Śloka 3 — Dhūma in the 2nd bhāva
रोगी धनी तु हीनाङ्गो राज्यापहृतमानसः। द्वितीये भावगे धूमे मन्दप्रज्ञो नपुंसकः ॥ ३ ॥
With Dhūma gone to the second bhāva: diseased, yet wealthy, defective of limb, his mind carried off (troubled) by the kingdom/state, dull of intellect, and impotent.

Śloka 4 — Dhūma in the 3rd bhāva (sahaja)
मतिमान् शौर्यसंयुक्त इष्टवित्तः प्रियंवदः। धूमे सहजभावस्थे धनाढ्यो धनवान् भवेत् ॥ ४ ॥
When Dhūma stands in the sahaja (third) bhāva he becomes intelligent, endowed with valour, possessed of the wealth he desires, sweet-spoken, rich in wealth and full of riches.

Śloka 5 — Dhūma in the 4th bhāva
कलत्राङ्गपरित्यक्तो नित्यं मनसि दुःखितः। चतुर्थेऽधिगते धूमे सर्वशास्त्रार्थचिन्तकः ॥ ५ ॥
When Dhūma has reached the fourth, he is abandoned by the person of his wife, constantly grieved in mind, and a ponderer of the meaning of all the śāstras.

Śloka 6 — Dhūma in the 5th bhāva
स्वल्पापत्यो धनैर्हीनो धूमे पञ्चमसंस्थिते। गुरुता सर्वभक्षं च सुहृन्मन्त्रविवर्जितः ॥ ६ ॥
With Dhūma placed in the fifth: few children, destitute of wealth, (yet) weightiness (dignity), an eater of everything, and cut off from the counsel of friends.

Śloka 7 — Dhūma in the 6th bhāva (ripu)
बलवान् शत्रुवधको धूमे च रिपुभावगे। बहुतेजोयुतः ख्यातः सदा रोगविवर्जितः ॥ ७ ॥
And when Dhūma goes to the ripu (sixth) bhāva: strong, a slayer of enemies, endowed with great lustre, famed, and always free of disease.

Śloka 8 — Dhūma in the 7th bhāva
निर्धनः सततं कामी परदारेषु कोविदः। धूमे सप्तमभावस्थे निस्तेजाः सर्वदा भवेत् ॥ ८ ॥
When Dhūma stands in the seventh bhāva he becomes poor, continually lustful, expert with the wives of others, and always devoid of lustre.

Śloka 9 — Dhūma in the 8th bhāva (mṛtyu)
विक्रमेण परित्यक्तः सोत्साहः सत्यसंगरः। अप्रियो निष्ठुरः स्वार्थी धूमे मृत्युगते सति ॥ ९ ॥
When Dhūma has gone to the mṛtyu (eighth) bhāva: forsaken by prowess, (yet) full of enthusiasm, true to his pledged word, unpleasant, harsh, and self-seeking.

Śloka 10 — Dhūma in the 9th bhāva (dharma)
सुतसौभाग्यसम्पन्नो धनी मानी दयान्वितः। धर्मस्थाने स्थिते धूमे धर्मिष्ठो बन्धुवत्सलः ॥ १० ॥
With Dhūma placed in the dharma (ninth) sthāna: blessed with sons and good fortune, wealthy, self-respecting, full of compassion, most righteous, and affectionate to kinsmen.

Śloka 11 — Dhūma in the 10th bhāva (karma)
सुतसौभाग्यसंयुक्तः सन्तोषी मतिमान् सुखी। कर्मस्थे मानवो नित्यं धूमे सत्पदस्थितः ॥ ११ ॥
When Dhūma is in the karma (tenth) bhāva, the man is joined with sons and good fortune, contented, intelligent, happy, and always established in a good station (on the good path).

Śloka 12 — Dhūma in the 11th bhāva (lābha)
धनधान्यहिरण्याढ्यो रूपवांश्च फलान्वितः। धूमे लाभगते चैव विनीतो गीतकोविदः ॥ १२ ॥
And when Dhūma goes to the lābha (eleventh): rich in wealth, grain and gold, handsome, endowed with fruit (gain), well-mannered, and skilled in song.

Śloka 13 — Dhūma in the 12th bhāva
पतितः पापकर्मा च द्वादशे धूमसञ्ज्ञके। परदारेषु संसक्तो व्यसनी निर्घृणः शठः ॥ १३ ॥
When the one named Dhūma is in the twelfth: fallen (outcaste), a doer of sinful deeds, attached to the wives of others, addicted to vice, pitiless, and a cheat.

Śloka 14 — Vyatīpāta (Pāta) in the 1st bhāva
मूर्तौ पाते च सम्प्राप्ते जातो दुःखप्रपीडितः। क्रूरो घातकरो मूर्खो बन्धूनां द्वेषकारकः ॥ १४ ॥
When Pāta (Vyatīpāta) has arrived in the mūrti (first) bhāva, the native is sorely afflicted by grief, cruel, a doer of injury, a fool, and one who creates hostility among his kinsmen.

Śloka 15 — Vyatīpāta in the 2nd bhāva
जिह्मोऽतिपित्तवान् भोगी धनस्थे पातसञ्ज्ञके। निर्घृणश्चाकृतज्ञश्च दुष्टात्मा पापकृत् तथा ॥ १५ ॥
When the one called Pāta stands in the wealth (second) bhāva: crooked, of excessive pitta, a pleasure-seeker, pitiless, ungrateful, evil-souled, and likewise a doer of sin.

Śloka 16 — Vyatīpāta in the 3rd bhāva
स्थिरप्रज्ञो रणी दाता धनाढ्यो राजवल्लभः। पाते तु सहजे याते सेनाधीशो भवेन्नरः ॥ १६ ॥
But when Pāta has gone to the sahaja (third), the man becomes steady of intellect, a warrior, a giver, rich in wealth, dear to the king, and a commander of armies.

Śloka 17 — Vyatīpāta in the 4th bhāva
बन्धव्याधिसमायुक्तः सुतसौभाग्यवर्जितः। चतुर्थगो यदा पातस्तदा स्यान्मनुजस्तु सः ॥ १७ ॥
When Pāta is gone to the fourth, then that man is beset with bondage and disease, and bereft of the good fortune of sons.

Śloka 18 — Vyatīpāta in the 5th bhāva
दरिद्रो रूपसंयुक्तः पाते पञ्चमभावगे। कफपित्तानिलैर्युक्तो निष्ठुरो निरपत्रपः ॥ १८ ॥
When Pāta goes to the fifth bhāva: poor, (yet) endowed with beauty, afflicted by kapha, pitta and vāta, harsh, and shameless.

Śloka 19 — Vyatīpāta in the 6th bhāva
शत्रुहन्ता सुपुष्टश्च सर्वास्त्राणां प्रयोगकृत्। कलासु निपुणः शान्तः पाते शत्रुगते सति ॥ १९ ॥
When Pāta has gone to the enemy (sixth) bhāva: a destroyer of foes, well-nourished, a wielder of all weapons, skilled in the arts, and tranquil.

Śloka 20 — Vyatīpāta in the 7th bhāva (kalatra)
धनदारसुतैस्त्यक्तः स्त्रीजितश्चातिदुःखितः। पाते कलत्रगे कामी निर्लज्जः परसौहृदः ॥ २० ॥
When Pāta goes to the kalatra (seventh): forsaken by wealth, wife and sons, ruled by his wife, exceedingly miserable, lustful, shameless, and friendly toward outsiders.

Śloka 21 — Vyatīpāta in the 8th bhāva
विकलाक्षो विरूपश्च दुर्भगो द्विजनिन्दकः। मृत्युस्थाने स्थिते पाते रक्तपीडाप्रपीडितः ॥ २१ ॥
With Pāta placed in the mṛtyu (eighth) sthāna: defective of eye, ill-formed, unfortunate, a reviler of the twice-born, and tormented by blood-disorders.

Śloka 22 — Vyatīpāta in the 9th bhāva
बहुव्यापारको नित्यं बहुमित्रो बहुश्रुतः। पाते तु धर्मभावस्थे स्त्रीप्रियोऽतिप्रियंवदः ॥ २२ ॥
But with Pāta placed in the dharma (ninth) bhāva: engaged in many undertakings, always of many friends, widely learned, fond of women, and exceedingly sweet of speech.

Śloka 23 — Vyatīpāta in the 10th bhāva
सलक्ष्मीको धर्मकृच्छान्तो धर्मकार्येषु कोविदः। पाते तु कर्मभावस्थे महाप्राज्ञो विचक्षणः ॥ २३ ॥
But with Pāta placed in the karma (tenth) bhāva: possessed of Lakṣmī (prosperity), a doer of dharma, tranquil, expert in religious works, greatly wise and discerning.

Śloka 24 — Vyatīpāta in the 11th bhāva
प्रभूतधनवान् मानी सत्यवादी दृढव्रतः। अश्वाढ्यो गीतसंसक्तः पाते लाभगते सति ॥ २४ ॥
When Pāta has gone to the lābha (eleventh): possessed of abundant wealth, self-respecting, truthful of speech, firm in his vows, rich in horses, and devoted to song.

Śloka 25 — Vyatīpāta in the 12th bhāva
कोपी च बहुकर्माढ्यो व्यङ्गो धर्मस्य दूषकः। व्ययस्थाने गते पाते विद्वेषी निजबन्धुषु ॥ २५ ॥
And when Pāta has gone to the vyaya (twelfth) sthāna: irascible, rich in many activities, deformed of limb, a defiler of dharma, and hostile toward his own kinsmen.

Śloka 26 — Parivesha (Paridhi) in the 1st bhāva
विद्वान् सत्यरतः शान्तो धनवान् पुत्रवाञ् शुचिः। दाता च परिधौ मूर्तौ जायते गुरुवत्सलः ॥ २६ ॥
With Paridhi (Parivesha) in the mūrti (first): one is born learned, devoted to truth, tranquil, wealthy, possessed of sons, pure, generous, and affectionate to his teachers.

Śloka 27 — Parivesha in the 2nd bhāva
ईश्वरो रूपवान् भोगी सुखी धर्मपरायणः। धनस्थे परिधौ नूनं प्रभुर्भवति मानवः ॥ २७ ॥
With Paridhi in the wealth (second) bhāva, the man surely becomes powerful — a lord, handsome, an enjoyer, happy, devoted to dharma, and a master (of others).

Śloka 28 — Parivesha in the 3rd bhāva
स्त्रीवल्लभः सुरूपाङ्गो देवस्वजनसङ्गतः। तृतीये परिधौ भृत्यो गुरुभक्तिसमन्वितः ॥ २८ ॥
With Paridhi in the third: beloved of women, of beautifully formed limbs, associated with the gods and with his own people, a dependent (living by service), and full of devotion to his teachers.

Śloka 29 — Parivesha in the 4th bhāva (sukha)
परिधौ सुखभावस्थे विस्मितं त्वरिमङ्गलम्। अक्रूरं त्वथ सम्पूर्णं कुरुते गीतकोविदम् ॥ २९ ॥
With Paridhi placed in the sukha (fourth) bhāva, it makes one astonished (wonder-struck), auspicious even to his enemies, ungentle-free (i.e. not cruel), complete (in every way), and skilled in song.

Śloka 30 — Parivesha in the 5th bhāva
लक्ष्मीवाञ् शीलवान् कान्तः प्रियवान् धर्मवत्सलः। पञ्चमे परिधौ जातः स्त्रीणां भवति वल्लभः ॥ ३० ॥
One born with Paridhi in the fifth is prosperous, of good character, charming, dear to people, fond of dharma, and beloved of women.

Śloka 31 — Parivesha in the 6th bhāva
व्यक्तोऽर्थः पुत्रवान् रोगी सर्वसत्त्वहिते रतः। परिधौ रिपुभावस्थे शत्रुहा जायते नरः ॥ ३१ ॥
With Paridhi placed in the ripu (sixth) bhāva, the man is born of manifest (renowned) wealth, possessed of sons, diseased, devoted to the welfare of all beings, and a slayer of enemies.

Śloka 32 — Parivesha in the 7th bhāva (yūna)
स्वल्पापत्यः सुखैर्हीनो मन्दप्रज्ञः सुनिष्ठुरः। परिधौ यूनभावस्थे स्त्रीणां व्याधिश्च जायते ॥ ३२ ॥
With Paridhi placed in the yūna (seventh) bhāva: few children, bereft of comforts, dull of intellect, very harsh — and disease befalls his women (wife).

अध्यात्मचिन्तकः शान्तो दृढकायो दृढव्रतः। धर्मवांश्च सुसत्त्वश्च परिधौ रन्ध्रभावगे ॥ ३३ ॥
When Paridhi goes to the randhra (eighth) bhāva: a contemplator of the inner self, tranquil, firm of body, firm in his vows, righteous, and of great courage.

When Paridhi goes to the dharma (ninth): endowed with sons, happy, charming, rich in wealth, free of fickleness, self-respecting, and of a mind contented with little.

कलासु कुशलो भोगी दृढकायो ह्यमत्सरः। परिधौ दशमे प्राप्ते सर्वशास्त्रार्थपारगः ॥ ३५ ॥
When Paridhi has reached the tenth: skilled in the arts, an enjoyer, firm of body, free of envy, and one who has crossed to the far shore of the meaning of all śāstras.

स्त्रीरोगी गुणवांश्चैव मतिमान् स्वजनप्रियः। लाभे तु परिधौ याते मन्दाग्निरुपपद्यते ॥ ३६ ॥
But when Paridhi has gone to the lābha (eleventh): having an ailing wife, virtuous, intelligent, dear to his own people, and afflicted with weak digestive fire.

Śloka 37 — Parivesha in the 12th bhāva
व्ययस्थे परिधौ जातो गुरुनिन्दापरायणः। दुर्मतिर्दुःखितो नित्यं जायते व्ययकृत्तथा ॥ ३७ ॥
One born with Paridhi in the vyaya (twelfth) is given over to reviling his teachers, of evil mind, constantly grieved, and likewise a spender (wasteful).

Śloka 38 — Indracāpa (Cāpa) in the 1st bhāva (tanu)
धनधान्य-हिरण्याढ्यः कृतज्ञः सम्मतः सताम्। सर्वदोष-परित्यक्तश्चापे तनुगते नरः ॥ ३८ ॥
When Cāpa (Indracāpa) goes to the tanu (first), the man is rich in wealth, grain and gold, grateful, esteemed by the good, and free of every fault.

प्रियंवदः प्रगल्भाढ्यो विनीतो विद्यया युतः। धनभावगते चापे रूपवान् धर्मतत्परः ॥ ३९ ॥
When Cāpa goes to the wealth (second) bhāva: sweet-spoken, richly bold, well-mannered, endowed with learning, handsome, and intent upon dharma.

Śloka 40 — Indracāpa in the 3rd bhāva
कृपणोऽतिकलाभिज्ञश्चौर्यकर्मरतः सदा। सहजे धनुषि प्राप्ते हीनाङ्गो गतसौहृदः ॥ ४० ॥
When the Bow (Cāpa) has reached the sahaja (third): miserly, exceedingly versed in the arts, always given to acts of theft, defective of limb, and devoid of friendship.

Śloka 41 — Indracāpa in the 4th bhāva
सुखी गोधन-धान्यादि-राजसम्मान-पूजितः। कार्मुके सुखसंस्थे तु नीरोगो जायते नरः ॥ ४१ ॥
But when the Bow (Kārmuka) is placed in the sukha (fourth), the man is born happy, honoured with cattle, wealth, grain and the like and with royal esteem, and free of disease.

Śloka 42 — Indracāpa in the 5th bhāva
रुचिमान् दीर्घदर्शी च देवभक्तः प्रियंवदः। चापे पञ्चमगे जातो विशुद्धः सर्वकर्मसु ॥ ४२ ॥
One born with Cāpa gone to the fifth is lustrous, far-sighted, devoted to the gods, sweet-spoken, and pure in all his undertakings.

Śloka 43 — Indracāpa in the 6th bhāva
शत्रुहन्ताऽतिधूर्तश्च सुखी प्रीतिरुचिः शुचिः। षष्ठस्थानगते चापे सर्वकर्म-समृद्धिभाक् ॥ ४३ ॥
When Cāpa has gone to the sixth sthāna: a slayer of enemies, exceedingly cunning, happy, delighting in affection, pure, and enjoying prosperity in all undertakings.

Śloka 44 — Indracāpa in the 7th bhāva
ईश्वरो गुणसम्पूर्णः शास्त्रविद्याभिज्ञः प्रियः। चापे सप्तमभावस्थे भवतीति न संशयः ॥ ४४ ॥
With Cāpa placed in the seventh bhāva he becomes a lord, complete in good qualities, versed in the śāstras and sciences, and beloved — of this there is no doubt.

Śloka 45 — Indracāpa in the 8th bhāva
षरधर्मरतः क्रूरः परदार-परायणः। अष्टमस्थानगे चापे विकलाङ्गो भवेज्जनः ॥ ४५ ॥
When Cāpa is gone to the eighth sthāna, the person becomes given over to [sinful] practices, cruel, addicted to the wives of others, and defective of limb.

Śloka 46 — Indracāpa in the 9th bhāva
तपस्वी व्रतचर्यासु निरतो विद्ययाधिकः। धर्मस्थे सति चापे तु मानवो लोकविश्रुतः ॥ ४६ ॥
But when Cāpa stands in the dharma (ninth), the man is an ascetic, devoted to the observance of vows, pre-eminent in learning, and renowned in the world.

Śloka 47 — Indracāpa in the 10th bhāva
बहुपुत्रधनैश्वर्यो गोमहिष्यादिमान् भवेत्। कर्मस्थे चापसंयुक्ते जायते लोकविश्रुतः ॥ ४७ ॥
When the karma (tenth) is joined with Cāpa, he becomes possessed of many sons, wealth and lordship, owning cows, buffaloes and the like, and is born renowned in the world.

Śloka 48 — Indracāpa in the 11th bhāva (printed as lagna)
चापग्रहे लग्नगते लाभयुक्तो भवेन्नरः। नीरोगो दृढकोपाग्निर्मन्त्रस्त्रीपरमास्त्रवित् ॥ ४८ ॥
When the graha Cāpa is gone to the lagna (so printed), the man becomes joined with gain, free of disease, of a fierce fire of anger, and a knower of mantras, of women, and of the supreme weapons.

Śloka 49 — Indracāpa in the 12th bhāva
खलोऽतिमानी दुर्बुद्धिर्निर्लज्जो व्ययसंस्थिते। चापे परस्त्रीसंयुक्तो जायते निर्धनः सदा ॥ ४९ ॥
With Cāpa placed in the vyaya (twelfth): wicked, exceedingly arrogant, of evil intellect, shameless, consorting with the wives of others, and always poor.

Śloka 50 — Upaketu/Śikhi (Ketu) in the 1st bhāva
कुशलः सर्वविद्यासु सुखी वाग्निपुणः प्रियः। केतौ मूर्तिंगते जातः सर्वकामान्वितो भवेत् ॥ ५० ॥
One born with Ketu (Śikhi) gone to the mūrti (first) is skilled in all branches of learning, happy, clever of speech, dear (to others), and endowed with all desires fulfilled.

वक्ता प्रियंवदः कान्तो धनस्थानगते सति। काव्यकृत् पण्डितो मानी विनीतो वाहनान्वितः ॥ ५१ ॥
When it has gone to the wealth (second) sthāna: an orator, sweet-spoken, charming, a composer of poetry, learned, self-respecting, well-mannered, and possessed of vehicles.

Śloka 52 — Śikhi in the 3rd bhāva
कृपणः क्रूरकर्मा च कृशाङ्गो धनवर्जितः। सहजस्थे तु शिखिनि तीव्ररोगी प्रजायते ॥ ५२ ॥
But with Śikhi placed in the sahaja (third), he is born miserly, cruel in deed, lean of limb, destitute of wealth, and afflicted with acute disease.

But with Śikhi placed in the sukha (fourth): handsome, endowed with good qualities, sāttvic, exceedingly fond of the Veda (śruti), and always a partaker of happiness.

With Gulika placed in the lagna, the mortal is afflicted with disease, continually lustful, possessed of a sinful soul, a cheat, of wicked disposition, and exceedingly miserable.

When Māndi has gone to the sons' (fifth) sthāna, he becomes a detractor (of others), destitute, short-lived, hostile, mean, impotent, ruled by his wife, and an unbeliever.

But when Māndi goes to the randhra (eighth), he is born ever-hungry, grieved, cruel, afflicted with sharp disease, exceedingly pitiless, destitute, and devoid of good qualities.

With Prāṇapada in the lagna the man becomes mute or mad, dull of limb, defective of limb, grieved, lean, wasted, and diseased.

With Prāṇa(pada) in the vyaya (twelfth), the man is born mean, wicked, defective of limb, hostile toward the twice-born and toward his kinsmen, afflicted with eye-disease, or one-eyed.

Śloka 86 — Concluding verse — extend the same reasoning to the visible grahas
इति धूमादिसंज्ञानां ग्रहाणां फलमीरितम्। सूर्यादीनां नभोगानामपि तद् विमृशेद् बुधः ॥ ८६ ॥
Thus has the result of the grahas named Dhūma and the rest been declared. The wise one should reflect upon that (same method) for the sky-going grahas beginning with the Sun as well.

Śloka 87 — Final rule: weigh the two classes to get high, low or middling result

In this way, by discrimination, the discerning should know the fruit produced by the bhāvas to be exceedingly auspicious, or inauspicious, or else middling.
