Chapter on the Ārūḍha Pada — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 30
The complete Chapter on the Ārūḍha Pada chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 34 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Introduction — the rāśi-ārūḍha pada announced
Now, O best of the twice-born (Maitreya), for the sake of laying down the declaration of results I shall speak in particular of the rāśi-ārūḍha pada of the grahas and of the bhāvas.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Definition of the lagna-pada (ārūḍha lagna)
In whichever rāśi, counted in order from the lagna, the lord of the lagna stands, the rāśi that many signs onward from that one is declared to be the pada of the lagna.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Padas of the other bhāvas; primacy of the lagna-pada
In exactly this way the pada of the other bhāvas also arises. Among them, O sage (Maitreya), the pada of the lagna is to be known as the foremost.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Exception — when the pada falls on the 1st or the 7th
But when the bhāva's own place would become the pada, the tenth is desired as the pada; and when the seventh would likewise become it, the fourth is declared to be the pada.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Worked application of the exception (lord in 4th, lord in 7th)
When the lord stands in the fourth, the fourth itself is declared to be the pada; and likewise when the lord stands in the seventh, the tenth is seen as the pada.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Definition of the ārūḍha (pada) of a graha
From wherever a sky-goer (graha) is placed, however many signs away its own house falls, the rāśi that many signs onward from it — that the wise know as the ārūḍha of the graha.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Grahas owning two rāśis — use the stronger house
For those (grahas) that own two houses, whichever house is the stronger — one should count up to that limit, and thence the wise are to determine the pada in this same manner.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 7
Śloka 8-9 — Benefics/malefics in the 11th from the pada — source of wealth
Now I shall fully declare some of the results that depend on the pada. If the eleventh place from the pada is conjoined with or aspected by benefic grahas, the child born is wealthy, his wealth acquired by just means. If that place is aspected by or conjoined with malefics, he becomes wealthy by unjust means.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 8-9
Śloka 10 — Mixed grahas in the 11th from the pada; dignity multiplies gains
With mixed (benefic and malefic) grahas a mixed result is to be understood. When they occupy their ucca, a friend's house and the like, gain arises in many ways and the attainment of happiness in manifold forms.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — All grahas aspecting the 11th, none in the 12th, from the pada
If the sky-goers aspect the house of gain (the eleventh) from the ārūḍha, and the twelfth is unaspected by any graha, then the one born is like unto a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Argalā on the 11th from the pada — escalating fortune (part 1)
O best of the twice-born (Maitreya)! When there is abundance of benefic aspect and conjunction upon the eleventh from the pada; and when that place has argalā upon it; and when there again there is a meeting of many argalās —
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Argalā by benefics / exalted grahas; aspect of a good lord (part 2)
— and, O brāhmaṇa (Maitreya), when the argalā is by benefic grahas; and again when the argalā is by an exalted graha; and when it is aspected by an auspicious lord, or by one occupying the lagna, the ninth and so forth —
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Result: progressively greater fortune, provided no graha in the 12th
— one should declare the fortune of the native to be powerful, each successive condition making it greater still — provided that in the said yogas no graha looks upon the twelfth.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Benefics and malefics in the 12th from the pada — heavy expenditure
O Maitreya! When the twelfth from the pada is conjoined with or aspected by benefics and malefics, there is thus an excess of expenditure, always attended by constant special earning.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Nature of that earning — righteous, crooked or mixed
With auspicious grahas the earning is by a good road; with malefic sky-goers by a crooked road; with mixed grahas a mixed result is to be declared. When (grahas) occupy the house of gain, there is attainment of wealth.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 16
Śloka 17 — Venus, Sun, Rāhu in the 12th from the pada — expenditure through the king
When the twelfth from the pada-ārūḍha is aspected by Venus, the Sun and Rāhu, expenditure rooted in the king is to be declared; and by the aspect of the Moon, especially so.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 17
Śloka 18 — Mercury in the 12th from the pada — expenditure among kinsmen or in quarrel
When Mercury is in the twelfth from the pada-ārūḍha and is conjoined with or aspected by benefic grahas, expenditure is constantly among kinsmen; by malefic aspect, expenditure arises from quarrel.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 18
Śloka 19 — Jupiter in the 12th from the pada — expenditure by one's own hand
O best of the twice-born (Maitreya), when the preceptor of the gods (Jupiter) is in the twelfth from the pada and is aspected by other sky-goers, expenditure of the native rooted in kara — i.e. arising from taxes or levies, or, on the literal reading, from his own hand — is to be declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 19
Śloka 20 — Saturn with Mars in the 12th from the ārūḍha — loss through brothers
O brāhmaṇa (Maitreya)! When Saturn is in the twelfth from the ārūḍha, joined with the son of the Earth (Mars), and aspected by another graha, there is expenditure of wealth rooted in brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 20
Śloka 21 — The same yogas read from the 11th give gain
The yogas that I have reckoned as pertaining to the twelfth place from the pada — those same yogas, when they occur in the house of gain (the eleventh), always produce gain.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 21
Śloka 22 — Rāhu or Ketu in the 7th from the pada — abdominal affliction
If Rāhu, or else Ketu, is stationed in the seventh from the pada, the child is afflicted with pain of the belly — or, by Ketu, exceedingly tormented.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 22
Śloka 23 — Ketu in the 7th from the pada with malefics
When Ketu goes to the seventh from the pada and is conjoined with or aspected by malefic grahas, the man becomes rash and daring, white-haired, and of a long member.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 23
Śloka 24 — Jupiter, Venus, Moon in the 7th from the pada — wealth
If Jupiter, Venus and the night-maker (the Moon) — one of them, or two, or even all three — occupy the seventh place from the pada, the native becomes possessed of wealth.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 24
Śloka 25 — Any exalted graha in the 7th from the pada
O twice-born one (Maitreya)! If in the seventh from the pada a graha — benefic or even malefic — stands in exaltation, that native too assuredly becomes prosperous and endowed with good fame.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 25
Śloka 26 — The same results read from the 2nd from the pada
O best of the twice-born (Maitreya)! Those yogas which have just been stated for the seventh bhāva from the pada are, exactly so, to be understood by the wise for the second as well.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 26
Śloka 27 — A strong exalted benefic in the 2nd from the pada — wealth
Mercury standing in exaltation, or Jupiter, or indeed Venus — any one of them, if strong and placed in the house of wealth, bestows prosperity upon the embodied one.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 27
Śloka 28 — Extending the pada/lagna yogas to the kārakāṃśa chart
And those yogas which have been duly stated with respect to the pada and the lagna — know, O sage (Maitreya), that in the chart of the kārakāṃśa they too are held valid by the good.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 28
Śloka 29 — Benefic / Venus in the 2nd from the ārūḍha
If a benefic is in the house of wealth (the second) from the ārūḍha, the native becomes ruler of all lands, or else all-knowing. And if Venus is there, he becomes a poet and a disputant.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 29
Śloka 30-31 — Kalatra-pada in kendra/koṇa from ārūḍha; and the 7th-pada in 6/8/12
If the pada of the wife (the 7th-pada) stands in a kendra or koṇa from the ārūḍha, or if the padas of the lagna and of the seventh are both accompanied by strong sky-goers, then assuredly he becomes prosperous and renowned in the land. But if the pada of the wife falls in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, the native is destitute.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 30-31
Śloka 32 — A strong graha in kendra/koṇa/upacaya from the lagna- or 7th-pada
If a graha of good strength is stationed in a kendra, a koṇa or an upacaya from the pada, or likewise from the seventh (pada), it bestows the happiness of wife and of husband.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 32
Śloka 33 — The 7th-pada in kendra/koṇa vs. in the trika
If the pada of the seventh stands in a kendra or trikoṇa from the ārūḍha, there is indeed mutual affection between the married pair; if it falls in the trika, enmity is certain.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 33
Śloka 34 — Same method for the padas of children and other bhāvas
In the same way, O brāhmaṇa (Maitreya), when the padas of children and the rest are placed (thus) relative to the lagna-pada, the knower of destiny should determine friendship or enmity, and loss or increase.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 34
Śloka 35 — Lagna-pada and 7th-pada in kendra/koṇa or 3rd/11th — a king
When the pada of the body (lagna) and the pada of the seventh are placed in kendras or koṇas, or else in the third and the eleventh, the one born assuredly becomes a king, a lord of the earth.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 35
Śloka 36 — Closing rule — always judge from both padas
Thus from the pada of the lagna, and likewise from the pada of the second and the rest, the wise should always declare the result after looking at the two padas together.
BPHS Adhyāya 30, śloka 36
