Chapter on the Results of the Upapada — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 31
The complete Chapter on the Results of the Upapada chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 42 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Invocation / announcement of the upapada chapter
Now, O Brāhmaṇa, I shall declare to you the results that depend upon the upapada, by the knowledge of which one becomes learned and able to point out the results for the native.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Definition of upapada (also called gauḍa / upārūḍha)
Whatever is the pada of the bhāva that attends upon the principal aṅga-bhāva (the lagna) — that very one is called upapada, or gauḍa, or else upārūḍha.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Upapada in a benefic sign / with benefic conjunction or aspect
When that upapada falls in the house of a benefic and is joined or aspected by benefics, most excellent happiness arising from wife and sons is to be known, O sage.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Upapada in a malefic sign / with malefic conjunction or aspect
But if that same (upapada) stands in a malefic sign, joined with malefics or aspected by malefics, the native is deprived of the happiness of wife and the rest, or else he goes forth as a wandering renunciant.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Benefic aspect cancels loss of wife; when the Sun is not counted a malefic
If there is the aspect or conjunction of good grahas upon it, destruction of the wife does not occur. The Sun, when placed in his ucca, in his own rāśi, or in a friend's rāśi, is not to be reckoned malefic.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — When the Sun IS malefic; upapada's 2nd aspected by benefics
If, however, he (the Sun) stands in his nīca sign or in an enemy's house, he is declared malefic by the wise. And when the second from the upapada is aspected by benefic grahas —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — 2nd from upapada in a benefic sign / in a nīca navāṃśa
— (and when it is) in a benefic sign, or in benefic conjunction, the result should be declared as before (i.e. wife-and-son happiness). But if the second from the upapada is in the navāṃśa of a debilitated graha, and (is joined) by debilitated grahas —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Destruction of wife; or exalted placement giving many beautiful wives
— or joined with malefics, the native becomes a destroyer of his wife. But if (that place) is in an exaltation navāṃśa, or is occupied by an exalted graha, or is aspected by grahas placed in exaltation —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Many wives endowed with beauty; upapada or its 2nd in Gemini
— the man has many wives, endowed with beauty and auspicious marks. And when the upapada, or the second from it, falls in the sign Mithuna (Gemini), the person —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — Certainty of many wives; upapada / its 2nd joined by its own lord
— is then certainly born possessed of many wives. And when the upapada, or the second from it, is joined by the graha that is its own lord —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Lord in own rāśi or elsewhere — wifeless in later life
— or when that lord stands in his own rāśi, or is placed elsewhere than there, the native becomes wifeless in the later part of life; of this there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Nitya dārakāraka in its own rāśi
When the graha called the fixed (nitya) kāraka for the wife stands in its own rāśi, the native becomes wifeless in the later part of life; of this there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Upapada / nitya dārakāraka in exaltation or debilitation — the wife's family
But when the LORD of the upapada, or the fixed kāraka of the wife, occupies an exaltation sign, a wife is obtained from a good family; when placed in debilitation, the reverse of that.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Benefic connection to upapada or its 2nd — a beautiful, virtuous wife
And through the connection of benefics with the upapada, or else with the second from it, the native's wife is well-formed and endowed with good qualities.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Saturn and Rāhu in the 2nd from upapada — abandonment or death of the wife
But when the second from the upapada is joined by Saturn and Rāhu, there follows the abandonment of the wife on account of scandal, or else her death.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Venus and Ketu on the upapada or its 2nd — bleeding disorder of the wife
When that same place, or the upārūḍha itself, is joined by Venus and Ketu, his wife becomes afflicted by the disease of bleeding discharge (rakta-pradara).
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 16
Śloka 17 — Mercury+Ketu — bone discharge; Saturn, Rāhu and Sun — bone fever
When that place is joined by Mercury and Ketu, the wife suffers from a discharge from the bones; when Saturn, Rāhu and the Sun are there, they cause bone-fever for the wife.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 17
Śloka 18 — Mercury and Rāhu — a stout wife; Saturn and Mars in Mercury's house — nasal disease
Mercury and Rāhu, placed there, make the young wife stout of limb; but if Saturn and Mars are in a house of Mercury, the wife is afflicted with disease of the nose.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 18
Śloka 19 — Same in Mars's house; Jupiter and Saturn — ear and eye disease
Exactly such a result is declared by the wise for a house of Mars as well. In that same place, through Jupiter and Saturn, the wife is afflicted with diseases of the ear and the eye.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 19
Śloka 20 — Mercury/Mars or Rāhu/Jupiter in a sign other than their own — dental disease
When Mercury and Mars there occupy a sign other than their own, or likewise Rāhu and Jupiter, then the native's wife is tormented by disease of the teeth.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 20
Śloka 21 — Saturn and Rāhu in Saturn's house — lame, wind-afflicted wife; benefic cancellation
Saturn and Rāhu in a house of Saturn: the wife is lame and tormented by wind-disorder. But if benefics aspect or join that place, such a result is not to be declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 21
Śloka 22 — Reading the 7th from pada, upapada and lagna
Whatever rāśi stands seventh from the pada, from the upapada, and from the lagna — from that, from its lord, or from its navāṃśa, the result should be declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 22
Śloka 23 — Progeny — 9th from those points
O twice-born, when Saturn, Mercury and the Moon are placed in the ninth from the points already mentioned, there is childlessness; and by Rāhu, Jupiter and the Sun there, abundance of sons.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 23
Śloka 24 — Moon alone there — one son; Jupiter, Sun, Rāhu — a majestic son
By the Moon alone there, one son; from a mixture (of benefics and malefics) that happiness comes only after long delay. Through Jupiter, the Sun and Rāhu, (there is one who is) majestic, endowed with strength and vigour —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 24
Śloka 25 — A fiercely victorious son; Mars and Saturn — sonlessness
— a son fiercely victorious and a crusher of enemies. When that place is joined by Mars and Saturn, the man is born sonless.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 25
Śloka 26 — Adopted or fraternal son; odd sign — many sons
Or he becomes possessed of another's son, or of a son born of his own brother. And when that place falls in an odd rāśi, the native has many sons —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 26
Śloka 27 — Even sign — few offspring; upapada in Leo with the Moon
— but when it is not odd, O Maitreya, he is born with very few offspring. O sage, when the upapada is in Siṃha (Leo) and is joined or aspected by the Moon —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 27
Śloka 28 — Few offspring in Leo; daughters in Virgo; judging from the 5th's navāṃśa and putra-kāraka
— (the native is) of very few offspring; but in Aṅganā (Kanyā, Virgo) the man becomes a begetter of daughters. And (progeny is to be judged) likewise from the navāṃśa of the putra-bhāva and from the kāraka of progeny —
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 28
Śloka 29 — Judging yogas in the triṃśāṃśa; Saturn and Rāhu in 3rd/11th from the pada
— in this way one should also examine the yoga in the triṃśāṃśa chart. Saturn and Rāhu, placed from that (the pada) in the third and the eleventh, destroy brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 29
Śloka 30 — Which brother is destroyed; Venus there — loss of an intervening pregnancy
Of these, in the first, (destruction) of the elder brother; and in the third, of the one born after him. When Venus stands there, there is destruction of the pregnancy immediately adjoining his own.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 30
Śloka 31 — Venus on lagna, pada or the 8th — the same result
When the lagna, the pada, or the eighth is joined or aspected by Venus, those who know the truth of horā declare a result of the same kind, O twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 31
Śloka 32 — Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter in 3rd/11th — many brothers
O best of the twice-born, the Moon, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter placed in the third and the eleventh bestow many brothers, rich in strength, vigour and majesty.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 32
Śloka 33 — Saturn and Mars conjoined with / aspecting 3rd and 11th
When the third and the eleventh are joined or aspected by Saturn and Mars, the foremost of sages declare the destruction of the younger and the elder (brothers).
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 33
Śloka 34 — Saturn alone in both 11th and 3rd — all co-uterine siblings perish
When Saturn alone is placed in the eleventh or in the third, then, the native alone excepted, the other co-uterine siblings perish.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 34
Śloka 35 — Ketu in 3rd/11th — happiness from sisters, little from brothers
With Ketu in the third and the eleventh, there is abundant happiness from a sister, but little happiness from a brother — this without any doubt, O best of the twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 35
Śloka 36 — Malefic in the 6th from ārūḍha with no benefic connection — a thief
But when a malefic stands in the enemy-bhāva (the sixth) from the ārūḍha, devoid of benefics and without any benefic relation, the native is certainly a thief.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 36
Śloka 37 — Rāhu in the 7th or 12th — learned and fortunate
When the seventh or the twelfth place is joined or aspected by Rāhu, the child becomes possessed of knowledge and endowed with much good fortune, O twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 37
Śloka 38 — Benefic joined to the ārūḍha — ruler of all lands; Jupiter, Venus there
When Mercury is conjoined with the ārūḍha, one becomes lord of all lands; with Jupiter there, all-knowing; and with Venus, a poet and a disputant.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 38
Śloka 39 — Benefic in the 2nd from pada or upapada — wealth
When a benefic graha stands in the wealth-place (the second) from the pada, or from the upapada, one is born lord of all substances and prosperous, O best of the twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 39
Śloka 40 — 2nd lord in the 2nd from upapada with malefics — a thief
He in whose chart the lord of wealth (the 2nd lord) is placed in the wealth-place — the 2nd — reckoned from the upapada, and is joined with malefic grahas, is certainly a thief.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 40
Śloka 41 — Rāhu / Ketu in the 2nd from the lord of the 7th from upārūḍha
O Maitreya, when Rāhu occupies the wealth-place (the second) reckoned from the lord of the seventh from the upārūḍha, the native is born with protruding teeth; and with Ketu there, of indistinct speech.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 41
Śloka 42 — Saturn there — ugly form; mixed grahas — mixed results (chapter close)
If Saturn should be in that very place, then he is of ugly form. From the conjunction of mixed grahas one should declare a mixed result.
BPHS Adhyāya 31, śloka 42
