Chapter on the Results of Argalā — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 32

The complete Chapter on the Results of Argalā chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 17 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — what is argalā and what does it yield

O great sage! That argalā which you earlier declared to me here out of compassion — its form, and its fruit as well, I now wish to hear.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Parāśara's promise to expound argalā

O vipra! That by which the result of a bhāva and of a graha becomes settled — the argalā-bearing condition declared by the munis — I shall speak of it; listen attentively.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Definition of argalā and its bādhaka (obstructing) places

When a graha stands in the 4th, the 2nd, or the 11th, there is argalā. But the obstructors of that argalā are the grahas situated in the 10th, the 12th, and the 3rd.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — When bādhakas fail; many malefics in the 3rd

Grahas that are weak, or fewer in number, are not obstructors at all. Where many cruel grahas stand in the 3rd as makers of obstruction —

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Viparīta-argalā

— there too, O best of munis, a reverse argalā (viparītārgalā) is to be understood; and even so the fruit arising from the graha and the bhāva is declared to be argalā-endowed.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — 5th house as argalā; reversal for Rāhu and Ketu

The 5th too is an argalā place, and the 9th is its opposer. For the two shadowy grahas the argalā operates in the reverse direction.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Grading argalā by number of grahas

An argalā made by a single graha is called the slightest by the munis; that of two grahas is middling; and that of three or more grahas is held to be the best.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Two kinds of argalā; obstructed vs unobstructed

Argalā is declared to be of two kinds — reckoned from the rāśi and from the graha. Free of obstruction it gives auspicious fruit; otherwise it is fruitless.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — When the argalā result manifests

Whichever rāśi and whichever graha comes to be possessed of argalā, O twice-born — during the ripening daśā of that one the fruit will assuredly come to pass.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Argalā on pada, lagna or 7th — fame and fortune

If there is unobscured argalā on the pada, on the lagna, or on the 7th, then the person is born renowned and endowed with good fortune.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — A graha in an unobstructed argalā aspecting the lagna

Whichever graha, cruel or benign, stands in a person's unobstructed argalā — when the lagna is aspected by that graha, it conduces to the strengthening [of the yoga].

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Argalā on the 2nd and 3rd bhāvas

When the 2nd (wealth) is joined with argalā, he is furnished with abundance of grain and riches; when the 3rd (prowess), constant happiness from siblings and the like is declared.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Argalā on the 4th and 5th bhāvas

When the 4th bhāva is of such a kind (bearing argalā), there is excellent happiness of house and the rest; when the 5th is likewise so, the native is intelligent and blessed with the happiness of children.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Argalā on the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th bhāvas

With argalā on the 6th (enemies), there is fear from enemies; on the 7th, happiness from wife and the rest; on the 8th, however, affliction of many kinds; on the 9th (fortune), the man becomes fortunate.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Argalā on the 10th, 11th and 12th bhāvas

With [argalā] on the 10th the man is honoured by the king; on the 11th (gains) there is an inflow of wealth; but when the 12th bhāva is of that kind, expenditure is excessive in every direction.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Quality of argalā by benefic/malefic nature

In an argalā formed by benefic grahas, happiness of many kinds is assuredly recorded; in one so formed by a malefic, little; and in a mixed one, one should declare a middling result.

BPHS Adhyāya 32, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Argalā on a trikoṇa — royal status

When a trikoṇa comes to bear argalā, the native who is then born is endowed with happiness and good fortune, and is a king or the equal of a king.
