The complete Chapter on the Results of the Kārakāṃśa chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 98 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka colophon — Chapter colophon

Thus, in the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra furnished with the reflective Sudhā commentary, the chapter on the results of the kārakāṃśa is completed. 34.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka colophon

Śloka 1 — Introduction — Brahmā's teaching on grahas in the kārakāṃśa navāṃśa

O Vipra, I shall declare the results of the grahas in the kārakāṃśa — hear what was formerly spoken by Vidhi (Brahmā) — for the kārakāṃśa standing in the navāṃśa signs beginning with Aja (Meṣa).

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Ātmakāraka in Meṣa navāṃśa (kārakāṃśa)

When the kāraka called ātma[kāraka] is in the Aja (Meṣa) aṃśa, mice and cats in the house are a constant source of trouble — especially through conjunction with cruel (malefic) grahas.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Ātmakāraka in Vṛṣa and Mithuna navāṃśa

If it is gone to the Vṛṣa aṃśa, there is happiness from quadrupeds; but in the Mithuna aṃśa, diseases such as itch (kaṇḍū) arise.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — Ātmakāraka in Karkaṭa, Siṃha, Kanyā navāṃśa

In the Karkaṭa aṃśa there is fear from waters; in the Siṃha aṃśa that same fear comes from predatory beasts; in the Kanyā aṃśa there is corpulence and itching, and also fear from fire.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Ātmakāraka in Tulā and Vṛścika navāṃśa

In the Tulā aṃśa there is a merchant's livelihood, and also [skill as] a maker of cloth; in the Vṛścika aṃśa, fear from snakes, and likewise pain in the mother's breast.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Ātmakāraka in Dhanus and Makara navāṃśa

In the Cāpa (Dhanus) aṃśa there is a fall from a height, or else from a vehicle; in the Nakra (Makara) aṃśa, [gain] from water creatures — from conch, pearl and coral.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Ātmakāraka in Makara (continued) and Kumbha navāṃśa

and gain also from birds accrues to the native, without doubt. But in the Ghaṭa (Kumbha) aṃśa he becomes renowned through the construction of tanks and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Ātmakāraka in Mīna navāṃśa; the modifying rule of aspect

In the Mīna aṃśa, O Vipra, the native becomes a partaker of sāyujya-mukti. By the aspect of the good (benefics) there is no inauspicious result at all; by the aspect of the inauspicious (malefics) there is no auspicious result.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Benefic in kārakāṃśa or lagnāṃśa — royalty

O Maitreya, when a benefic graha is present in the kārakāṃśa or in the aṃśa of the lagna, or when it is aspected by a benefic, the native becomes a king, without doubt.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Benefics in kendra/koṇa from kārakāṃśa

Benefic grahas gone to a kendra or koṇa from the kārakāṃśa, free from the aspect and conjunction of malefics, make the man wealthy and learned.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 10

Śloka 11-11½ — Mixed grahas; upagraha in svakṣetra/ucca/benefic sign — kaivalya

With mixed grahas the result is to be known by the wise as mixed, both auspicious and inauspicious. But when the upagraha is placed in its own sign, in its own ucca, or in a benefic's sign, and is unaspected by malefics, one should declare kaivalya (final liberation) for him at the end.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 11-11½

Śloka 12 — Ātmakāraka in the varga of Moon/Mars/Venus — adultery

When the kāraka stands in the varga of the Moon, Mars or Venus, [the native is] an adulterer; when it is otherwise placed, one should declare an accordingly different result.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Sun, and full Moon aspected by Venus, in the kārakāṃśa

When the Sun is placed in the kārakāṃśa, he is devoted to royal service. When the full Moon there is aspected by Venus, the native is an enjoyer of pleasures and also of good intellect.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Strong Mars in the kārakāṃśa

When a strong Mars is there, the native is a spear-bearer; or he lives by fire, or is an alchemist (rasavādin), without doubt.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Strong Mercury in the kārakāṃśa

When a strong Mercury stands there, he is skilled in trade and of good intellect, and becomes supremely proficient in the arts and in works of craftsmanship.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Jupiter and Venus in the kārakāṃśa

When Jupiter is gone there, [he is] a knower of nigama and āgama and a doer of good deeds. With Venus there, a life of a hundred years, lustful, and a doer of the king's work.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Saturn and Rāhu in the kārakāṃśa

With Saturn (the Sun's son), he is famed through distinguished deeds and is even honoured by the king. With Rāhu, he is an archer, a thief, and a maker of iron implements and machines,

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Rāhu (concluded) and Ketu in the kārakāṃśa

or else a physician of poisons. With Ketu, he is born a thief, and a dealer in elephants and the like — thus it has been proclaimed by the knowing.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — Sun and Rāhu together in the kārakāṃśa — snake fear

When the Sun and Rāhu are in the kārakāṃśa, then there is fear from snakes. If those two are aspected by benefics there is no fear; if aspected by cruel grahas, death [results].

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 19

Śloka 20 — That pair in a benefic's ṣaḍvarga; Mars aspecting the Sun-Rāhu kārakāṃśa

If those two are gone to the ṣaḍvarga of a benefic, [he is] a physician who destroys poison. When the kārakāṃśa, joined by the Sun and Rāhu, is aspected by Mars —

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 20

Śloka 21 — Arson yoga, and Mercury's cancelling aspect

— and other grahas do not aspect it, he is a burner of his own house and of others'. But if aspected there by Mercury, the person does not become an incendiary.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 21

Śloka 22 — Jupiter's and Venus's aspect on the malefic's sign

But when the malefic's sign is aspected by Jupiter, he burns the neighbouring houses; and when it is aspected by Venus, there is no burning of houses at all, O Muni.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 22

Śloka 23 — Gulika in the kārakāṃśa with full-Moon aspect — theft

When the kārakāṃśa is joined by Gulika and is aspected by the full Moon, the native has his wealth carried off by thieves, or he himself becomes a thief.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 23

Śloka 24 — Gulika-kārakāṃśa unaspected; Mercury's aspect

When [the kārakāṃśa] with Gulika (Mānda) is unaspected by any graha, he is a giver of poison or one who dies by poison. If aspected by Mercury, there is undoubtedly aṇḍa-vṛddhi (enlargement of the testicles).

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 24

Śloka 25 — Ketu in the kārakāṃśa with malefic aspect — ear affliction

When the kārakāṃśa is joined by the banner (Ketu) and aspected by malefic grahas, the native suffers cutting of the ear or disease of the ear.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 25

Śloka 26 — Venus's aspect; Mercury-and-Saturn aspect on that Ketu-kārakāṃśa

When aspected there by Venus, the man is devoted to sacrificial rites. But when aspected by Mercury and Saturn, the person is surely devoid of virility.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 26

Śloka 27 — Mercury-and-Venus aspect — birth status

When aspected there by Mercury and Venus, he is the son of a maidservant, or else, O Muni, a paunarbhava son (the son of a remarried woman) — without doubt.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 27

Śloka 28 — Saturn's aspect — asceticism or servitude

When aspected by Saturn, the native is an ascetic, or else a servant. When aspected there by Saturn alone, the person takes to sannyāsa.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 28

Śloka 29 — Venus-and-Sun aspect; closing of the kārakāṃśa section

When aspected there by Venus and the Sun, he is born a servant of the king. Thus, in brief, has the result of the kārakāṃśa been declared, O Muni.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 29

Śloka 30 — 2nd from kārakāṃśa — Venus/Mars varga

When in the second from the kārakāṃśa there is the varga of Venus and Mars, the person is addicted to other men's wives; and by their aspect or conjunction, [so] to the very end of his life.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 30

Śloka 31 — Ketu, Jupiter, Rāhu in the 2nd from kārakāṃśa

With Ketu there, that result is absent; with Jupiter, he is always devoted to women; with Rāhu placed in the dhana (2nd) from the kārakāṃśa, there is destruction of wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 31

Śloka 32 — 3rd from kārakāṃśa — malefic vs benefic

When a cruel graha stands in the vikrama (3rd) from the kārakāṃśa, the native is greatly valorous; when a benefic graha has gone there, the native is timid, without doubt.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 32

Śloka 33 — 4th from kārakāṃśa — a mansion

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 34

Śloka 35 — 4th from kārakāṃśa — Sun and Moon

With the Sun it is to be understood as [a house] of grass; with the Moon, union with his wife takes place in an uncovered place — so it is settled in the śāstras.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 35

Śloka 36 — 5th from kārakāṃśa — Rāhu and Mars

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 40

Śloka 41 — Jupiter and Moon in kārakāṃśa or its 5th — authorship

If Jupiter and the Moon are placed together in the kārakāṃśa or in the fifth from it, the native becomes an author of treatises, accomplished in every branch of learning.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 41

Śloka 42 — Venus / Mercury variants; Jupiter alone — omniscient author

But with Venus [there] it is slightly less; with Mercury it is held to be very much less. When Jupiter alone is joined there, he is an all-knowing author of works.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 42

Śloka 43 — Learning by planet — Veda, Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā

[When Jupiter alone is joined there,] the man becomes a knower of the essence of the Veda, of Vedānta, and of śabda-śāstra (grammar). By Mars, a knower of the Nyāya-śāstra; by Mercury, a knower of Mīmāṃsā.

By Rāhu, or likewise by Ketu, the native is a knower of the essence of mathematics. And if there is a connection of Jupiter there, he is a knower of the sectarian (sāmpradāyika) śāstra. In the opinion of some, the same result [applies] also to the dhana (2nd) from the kārakāṃśa.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 45-45½

Śloka 46 — 6th (and 3rd) from kārakāṃśa

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 55

Śloka 56 — 9th from kārakāṃśa — Jupiter alone

When the ninth is joined or aspected by Jupiter alone, the native becomes greedy for women, and is also given to sense-pleasures.

BPHS Adhyāya 34, śloka 56

Śloka 57 — 10th from kārakāṃśa — benefics
