Chapter on Yogas (functional benefics and malefics by lagna) — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 35

The complete Chapter on Yogas (functional benefics and malefics by lagna) chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 43 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Transition from kārakāṃśa results to yoga results

Thus, O Vipra (Maitreya), the results arising from the kārakāṃśa have been told to you by me. Now hear the results born of the yogas of the grahas, [determined] through the lordship of the bhāvas.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Kendra lords vs trikoṇa lords — the base principle

Benefics that are lords of kendras do not bestow good results; malefics [that are lords of kendras] do not work evil. The lords of the trikoṇas are held to be auspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Lagna lord supreme; 5th and 9th give wealth

Because the lagna is both a kendra and a trikoṇa, it (its lord) is supremely a giver of good. The fifth and the ninth are said to be [givers of] wealth in particular.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — 7th and 10th give happiness; 3/6/11 lords always malefic

The seventh (kalatra) and the tenth are said to give happiness in particular. The lords of the third, sixth and eleventh always yield pāpa (evil) results.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — 2nd, 8th and 12th lords depend on association

The lords of the second (wealth), eighth (randhra) and twelfth (loss) give results according to their association, and according to the quality of whatever other house they occupy; and they are strong in ascending order.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Why the 8th lord is inauspicious

Because he owns the twelfth from fortune (the ninth), the lord of the eighth is not a giver of good. And if he also owns the third, sixth or eleventh, he is held to be inauspicious to a special degree.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Exceptions to the 8th-lord blemish

But by virtue of being lord of the lagna or of a trikoṇa, that very [graha] is held to be a giver of good. And the blemish of eighth-lordship does not attach to the Sun and the Moon.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Natural benefic / malefic status of the grahas

The preceptors of the gods and of the demons (Jupiter and Venus) are benefic; the Moon is held to be middling. Mercury is neutral; the Sun, Mars and Saturn are inauspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Graded strength among benefics and among malefics

The full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are strong in ascending order. The waning Moon, the Sun, Saturn and Mars are likewise progressively stronger, each than the one before.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Kendrādhipatya-doṣa applies to benefics too

The blemish of kendra-lordship is declared to attach even to a benefic graha. For the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus that [blemish] is progressively stronger in that order.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 10

Śloka 11-12 — Rājayoga — the four relations of kendra lord and koṇa lord

If the lords of a kendra and of a koṇa are situated in each other's houses, or if the two of them are situated together in one rāśi, or if one of them is in the other's house and is aspected by the other, or if the two aspect each other with full aspect — they are yogakāraka. One born under this yoga becomes renowned, or even a king.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 11-12

Śloka 13 — One graha owning both a kendra and a koṇa

A single graha, being at once lord of a kendra and lord of a koṇa, and placed in a kendra or in a koṇa, becomes a producer of yoga in a special degree.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Malefics turn benefic only with added trikoṇa lordship

The auspiciousness of malefics that comes from kendra-lordship [holds] only when they also own a trikoṇa — not from kendra-lordship alone.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Rājayoga cancelled by lordship of evil houses

When the lords of the kendra and of the trikoṇa are [at the same time] lords of the evil houses, then by their mere relationship a person does not obtain the yoga.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Rāhu and Ketu take on the results of their house and associate

Whatever bhāvas the two shadow grahas occupy, or with whichever bhāva-lords they are joined — being strong, they bestow the results of those very bhāvas.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Rāhu and Ketu as yogakāraka

If the two shadow grahas dwell in a kendra or in a trikoṇa, then through relationship with the lord of the other of these two [kinds of house], they become yogakāraka.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Maitreya's question — which grahas are yogakāraka for which lagna

For one born in which lagna are which grahas producers of yoga? And which of them are the givers of good results? These should be made known [to me], O greatly wise one!

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — Meṣa (Aries) lagna — benefics and malefics

Jupiter is declared to become a doer of evil as well, through dependence on another. Venus, being lord of a māraka house, is held to be a powerful māraka.

BPHS Adhyāya 35, śloka 20

Śloka 21 — Meṣa lagna — derived mārakas; closing of Aries section
