Chapter on the Results of the Avasthās (States) of the Grahas — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 46
The complete Chapter on the Results of the Avasthās (States) of the Grahas chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 164 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — the avasthās of the grahas
Maitreya said: The fruits of the sky-farers (grahas) have been declared in accordance with their avasthā; be gracious, O Lord, and tell me those avasthās together with their subdivisions.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Parāśara's answer — the bālādi series announced
Parāśara said: Among the manifold avasthās of the grahas proclaimed by the sages, the chief are those beginning with bāla. These I now declare — listen, O twice-born one!
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Bālādi pañcāvasthā — the five age-states by 6° portions
By six-degree portions in direct order in an odd rāśi, and in reverse order in an even one, O Muni, a graha is bāla (infant), kumāra (boy), yuvā (youth), vṛddha (aged), and mṛta (dead).
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Fruit-fraction assigned to each of the five age-states
In the bāla state the fruit is a quarter, in the kaumāra state a half; in [youth] it is full, in the vṛddha state a little, and when the graha is dead (mṛta) it is nil.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Jāgrat / svapna / suṣupti — the threefold wakefulness states
A graha placed in its own rāśi or in its ucca is jāgrat (awake); in the rāśi of a friend or of a neutral it is svapna (dreaming); in an enemy's rāśi or in its nīca it is suṣupti (deep sleep). Thus the avasthā of a graha is held to be threefold.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Fruit-quantum of jāgrat / svapna / suṣupti
Full, middling and nil respectively in the jāgrat, svapna and suṣupti states — thus, in order, the whole fruit was declared of old by the wise sages.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — The nine dīptādi avasthās named
Dīpta (blazing), svastha (at ease), pramudita (delighted), śānta (calm), dīna (wretched), duḥkhita (afflicted), vikala (crippled), khala (wicked) and kopī (enraged) — nine avasthās of the grahas are declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Definitions — dīpta, svastha, mudita, śānta, dīna
A graha standing in its own ucca is dīpta; in its own rāśi, svastha; in the rāśi of a great friend (adhimitra), mudita; in a friend's rāśi, śānta; in a neutral's rāśi it is called dīna.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Definitions — duḥkhita, vikala, khala, kopī
In an enemy's rāśi it is duḥkhita; conjoined with a pāpa-graha it is vikala; it is to be known as khala when in a khala-graha [i.e. malefic] situation; and conjoined with the Sun it becomes kopī.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — General principle — bhāva-fruit follows the avasthā
At the time of birth, or at any other time, whatever the condition of a graha in a bhāva may be, of just that kind is the fruit born of that bhāva to be known by the wise, and that specifically.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 10

In the ripening of the daśā of a svastha graha one obtains health, the comfort of wealth and the like received from the king, learning, fame, affection and greatness, and dharma arising from wife, wealth, land and so forth.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Daśā-result of a mudita graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a graha endowed with joy (mudita) there come garments and the like, fragrances, sons, wealth and fortitude; gain from the hearing of the Purāṇas and of dharma; and the obtaining of elephants and other conveyances, of clothing and of ornaments.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Daśā-result of a śānta graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a śānta graha one obtains happiness and dharma, land, sons, wife and conveyances; dharma-śāstra accompanied by the delight of learning; great wealth, and the state of being honoured by the lord of the gods [and of the earth].
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Daśā-result of a dīna graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a dīna graha there is fall from position and hostility with kinsmen; he lives by a contemptible and low occupation, is abandoned by people, and is tormented by disease.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Daśā-result of a duḥkhita graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a graha afflicted with sorrow (duḥkhita) he constantly meets manifold sorrow; he goes to a foreign land, is bereft of kinsfolk, and suffers fear spread by thieves, fire and kings.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 16
Śloka 17 — Daśā-result of a vikala graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a graha beset with disability (vikala) he comes to incapacity and disorder of mind; particularly the death of friends and the like, and affliction from thieves in respect of wife, sons, vehicles and garments.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 17
Śloka 18 — Daśā-result of a khala graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a khala graha he meets quarrel and separation, separation from the father, destruction of wealth and land through enemies and [other] people, and constant censure from his own kinsfolk.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 18
Śloka 19 — Daśā-result of a kopī graha
In the ripening of the daśā of a graha filled with anger (kopī), sins arrive in many forms: destruction of learning, wealth, wife, sons and kinsmen; distress concerning sons and the like; and disease of the eyes.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 19
Śloka 20 — The six lajjitādi avasthās named
Lajjita (ashamed), garvita (proud), kṣudhita (hungry), tṛpita (sated), mudita (delighted) and kṣobhita (agitated) — these states of the grahas are proclaimed.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 20

A graha gone to the house of sons (the 5th bhāva) and conjoined with Rāhu or Ketu, or joined with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is declared to be a lajjita graha.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 21
Śloka 22 — Definition — garvita graha
Again, a graha gone to its exaltation place, or placed in a trikoṇa, is likewise declared to be garvita — without any hindrance [to this rule], O best of the twice-born!
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 22
Śloka 23 — Definition — kṣudhita graha
If a graha stands in an enemy's house and is (further) conjoined with an enemy or aspected by an enemy, it is to be known as kṣudhita; and when it is joined with Saturn it is so all the more.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 23
Śloka 24 — Definition — tṛpita graha

BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 24
Śloka 25 — Definition — mudita graha

BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 25
Śloka 26 — Definition — kṣobhita graha
One that is accompanied by the Sun and is in every way aspected by malefics, or if it is aspected by an enemy, that one should be known as kṣobhita.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 26
Śloka 27 — Kṣudhita/kṣobhita destroy the bhāva they occupy
In whichever bhāvas the grahas stand, a kṣudhita or a kṣobhita graha is in every way the destroyer of the fruits of those bhāvas.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 27
Śloka 28 — Method — apply the avasthās to all bhāvas with strength-assessment
In this order [these states] are to be understood by the learned in respect of all the bhāvas; and the determination of the fruit is to be pronounced by weighing strength and weakness.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 28
Śloka 29 — Mixed results when joy and strength differ
When [grahas] mutually joined in joy [are of unlike strength], the wise should declare a mixed result; when weak, then there is loss, and when strong, great fruit.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 29
Śloka 30 — Afflicted avasthā in the 10th bhāva
He in whose karma-sthāna (the 10th bhāva) stands a graha that is lajjita, tṛpita, kṣudhita or kṣobhita — that man is a vessel of sorrow.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 30
Śloka 31 — Lajjita graha in the 5th bhāva — loss of sons
He in whose sons' place (the 5th bhāva) there is a lajjita graha suffers destruction of sons; only one always survives.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 31
Śloka 32 — Kṣobhita/tṛpita graha in the 7th bhāva — death of wife
He in whose seventh bhāva there is a kṣobhita or a tṛpita graha — his wife dies; this they declare as truth, O best of the twice-born!
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 32
Śloka 33 — Result of the garvita avasthā
The fruit of a garvita graha here, in particular, bestows on men the happiness of a new dwelling and pleasure-garden, kingship, dexterity in the arts, constant gain of wealth, and increase of business.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 33
Śloka 34 — Result of the mudita avasthā
In a mudita combination there is a spacious dwelling-hall; happiness in spotless garments, ornaments, land and women; sporting with one's own people; residence in a king's mansion; the destruction of the host of enemies; and the unfolding of intellect and learning.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 34
Śloka 35 — Result of the lajjita avasthā
By force of the lajjita state it grants disaffection, a mind turned away from Rāma (the Lord), destruction of sound judgement, the onset of illness in sons, journeys made in vain, a taste for quarrelsome talk, and no taste for what is auspicious.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 35
Śloka 36 — Result of the kṣobhita avasthā
The fruit of a kṣobhita graha in particular produces what is born of poverty, evil-mindedness and distress; it causes loss of wealth, affliction in the feet, and ruin of wealth by fire and through the wrath of the lord of the earth (the king).
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 36
Śloka 37 — Result of the kṣudhita avasthā
By force of a kṣudhita graha there is a fall into grief, delusion and the like; emaciation through mental anguish and dread arising from the torment of one's household; quarrel too with enemy folk, obstruction of men's wealth, the blocking of all one's powers, and the blunting of the intellect through despondency.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 37
Śloka 38 — Result of the tṛpita avasthā
When a tṛpita graha is present, in the midst of union with one's own woman there arises disease and disorder, and engagement in wicked undertakings; loss of wealth through dispute with one's own people, emaciation, torment inflicted by the wicked, and perpetual loss of honour.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 38
Śloka 39 — The twelve śayanādi avasthās (first list)
Śayana (lying down), upaveśa (sitting), netrapāṇi (eye-and-hand), prakāśana (shining forth), gamana (going) and āgamana (coming), and likewise dwelling in the assembly (sabhā)...
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 39
Śloka 40 — The twelve śayanādi avasthās (continued) and the ceṣṭās
...āgama (arrival), bhojana (eating), nṛtya-lipsā (the craving to dance), kautuka (eager delight), and nidrā (sleep) — these, and the ceṣṭā of the grahas, I shall declare before you.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 40
Śloka 41 — Computation of the śayanādi avasthā — step 1
In whatever nakṣatra a graha stands, multiply that [nakṣatra number] by it (the graha's own number); again multiplying by the aṃśa (the navāṃśa number), one should then add its own nakṣatra.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 41
Śloka 42 — Computation of the śayanādi avasthā — step 2
Adding likewise the elapsed daṇḍas and the lagna, the wise one should always divide by twelve (the Suns); and whatever remainder there is, that should be applied to the matter [i.e. counted off as the avasthā, the remainder being the ordinal number of the avasthā in the śayana…nidrā list].
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 42
Śloka 43 — Computation of the ceṣṭā — step 3
Again one should complete [the reckoning] by the method of the nākṣatrika daśā; then, enriched with the numeral of the initial vowel of the name, it is to be divided by twelve.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 43
Śloka 44 — Kṣepaka additions for Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury
For the Sun five are to be given, and for the Moon two should be given; for Mars two are to be joined on, and for Mercury three should be applied.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 44
Śloka 45 — Kṣepaka additions for Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rāhu
For Jupiter five (the arrows) are to be given, and three should be given for Venus; three moreover should be given for Saturn, and four should be given for Rāhu.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 45
Śloka 46 — The threefold dṛṣṭi / ceṣṭā / viceṣṭā
[The total, with the graha's kṣepaka added,] being divided by three (Rāma), by the remainder-figures the state is again held to be threefold: dṛṣṭi, ceṣṭā and viceṣṭā. I now declare the fruit thereof.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 46
Śloka 47 — Fruit-quantum of dṛṣṭi / ceṣṭā / viceṣṭā
In dṛṣṭi the fruit is ordinary, in ceṣṭā the fruit is abundant, and in viceṣṭā the fruit is scant — thus do they know the fruit of these states.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 47
Śloka 48 — Strength to be weighed, especially in exaltation
The auspicious and inauspicious [results] of the grahas [are to be declared] only after examining their strength and weakness; and the learned man should reckon strength especially when [a graha is] in its exaltation place.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 48
Śloka 49 — Sun in śayana avasthā
When the hot-rayed Sun has gone to the śayana state, men often suffer the disease of weak digestive fire, thickness of the feet, aggravation of pitta, a sore in the anus, and piercing pain in the region of the chest.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 49
Śloka 50 — Sun in upaveśana avasthā
When the Sun stands in the upaveśana state, the man goes about bearing the burden of poverty, is addicted to disputation about learning, is hard-hearted, and is indeed a destroyer [of wealth].
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 50
Śloka 51 — Sun in netrapāṇi avasthā
If the lord of the day (the Sun) is in the netrapāṇi state, the man is ever a bearer of joy, discriminating, benevolent to others, endowed with strength and wealth, exceedingly happy, and proud of the king's favour.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 51
Śloka 52 — Sun in prakāśana avasthā
When at birth the lord of the lotuses (the Sun) is in the prakāśana state: [the native is] generous of mind, complete in wealth, an orator in assemblies, a doer of much merit, exceedingly strong, and endowed with handsome form.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 52
Śloka 53 — Sun in gamana avasthā
When the lord of the day is in the gamana state, the man is indeed possessed of influence yet garlanded with sorrow, always indolent, bereft of intellect and wealth, stricken with fear, and especially given over to anger.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 53
Śloka 54 — Sun in āgamana avasthā
When the lord of the day [is in the āgamana state], the man is attached to others' wives, shunned by society, often fond of going and coming, miserly, adept in wickedness, unclean, and of evil mind.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 54
Śloka 55 — Sun in sabhā avasthā
When the beneficent day-maker (the Sun) has gone to the assembly (sabhā) state, the man is intent upon doing good to others, ever filled with wealth and jewels, a mine of virtues, possessed of land, new garments and a dwelling, exceedingly strong, affectionate towards friends of every kind, and supremely a bearer of the art of compassion.
BPHS Adhyāya 46, śloka 55
