The Chapter on the Varieties of Daśā — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 47
The complete The Chapter on the Varieties of Daśā chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 212 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka [quoted] 1-3 + trailing hemistich (p-341, book p.309) — Chara-daśā year values by the graha's distance from its own sign — Parāśara self-quotation embedded in the commentary
For a graha stationed in its own sign the years are just twelve. When it is in the second, one year; in the third, two years; in the fourth, three years are to be known; in the fifth, four years; when in the sixth, five years, and six in the seventh; when in the eighth, seven (naga) years; eight (nāga) years when in the ninth; in the tenth, nine (aṅka) years; and ten (dik) years when in the eleventh; when in the twelfth, eleven (rudra) years — thus were they declared of old by the wise.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka [quoted] 1-3 + trailing hemistich (p-341, book p.309)

BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Viṃśottarī — the nine daśā lords from Kṛttikā in three rounds
Beginning from Kṛttikā, by a threefold repetition: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus are proclaimed as the lords of the daśās.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 11

Śloka 13 — Viṃśottarī — the daśā years of the nine lords

The graha's daśā measure, multiplied by the bhayāta and divided by the bhabhoga, [yields] the elapsed years and so forth; its bhogya [balance comes] from subtracting that from the [full] measure.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Aṣṭottarī — when it applies, and its start from Ārdrā
When Rāhu is placed in a kendra or koṇa reckoned from the lord of the lagna — the lagna itself being excluded — then the daśā named Aṣṭottarī, [counted] from the nakṣatra Ārdrā onwards, is declared.

BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 20
Śloka 21 — Aṣṭottarī — the pakṣa/day-night condition for its use

Multiplied severally by one, two and so on in order, that measure yields the daśā; this, for the nine beginning with the Sun, is declared to be the daśā named 'Kāla'.

At night [the reckoning begins] from the rāśi occupied by the lagna; by day, from the rāśi joined by the lord of the lagna; at twilight, from the rāśi standing in the dhana-bhāva. This is declared to be the Cakra daśā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 48
Śloka 49 — Cakra daśā — ten years per rāśi; the name explained

Parāśara said: Now I speak of the Kālacakra daśā of men, which of old, O vipra, was told to Pārvatī by the Wielder of the Pināka himself.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 50
Śloka 51 — Kālacakra daśā — the essence extracted; its power to reveal good and ill
Having drawn out its essence I speak — listen; by the strength of it a man is able to know the auspicious and inauspicious [fortunes] of human beings.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 51
Śloka 52 — Kālacakra — drawing the twelve-spoked chart, savya and apasavya
One should draw a twelve-spoked chart with horizontal and vertical lines equal [in number]; thus there will be twelve cells, [drawn] twofold, as savya and apasavya.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 52
Śloka 53 — Kālacakra — placing the rāśis from Meṣa in the cells

— [and] Viśve [Uttarāṣāḍhā], Agni [Kṛttikā], Pavana [Svātī], Vyāla [Āśleṣā] and Revatī: these indeed are the savya stars. And the pādas of these ten stars are to be viewed as in Aśvinī.

Parāśara said: Thus what was formerly declared by Maheśa to the goddess Girijā concerning the Deha, the Jīva, the daśā and the rest, has now been stated by me.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 79
Śloka 80 — Maitreya's question — daśā-year values and the bhukta/bhogya method
Maitreya said: The years of the daśā-lords, the method of beginning the daśā, and the years and so on arising as elapsed and yet-to-be-enjoyed — pray tell me these, O lord.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 80
Śloka 81 — Kālacakra — daśā-years of the rāśis, taken from their lords
Parāśara said: Five, twenty-one, seven, nine, ten, sixteen and four are the daśā-years of [the grahas] beginning with the Sun; the [daśā-years] of the rāśis follow from their lords.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 81
Śloka 82 — Kālacakra — total longevity from the aṃśa at birth or query
Whatever aṃśa obtains at a person's birth-time or at the time of a query — the years of the nine rāśis beginning with that one are declared to be the longevity.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 82
Śloka 83 — Position within the aṃśa — full, half, or death-like distress
At the beginning of the aṃśa the longevity is full; in the middle, half of that; at the end of the aṃśa there is distress like death. Such is the view of these good [teachers].
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 83
Śloka 84 — Finding the aṃśa by proportion — announcement
Having thus grasped the exact principle, the wise one should compute the rāśi-aṃśa. Hereafter I shall state the means of doing it by proportion.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 84
Śloka 85 — The proportional rule for finding the navāṃśa from nakṣatra and pāda
The elapsed stars are divided by three; the remainder is multiplied by four and increased by the current pāda — that becomes the aṃśa of the rāśis.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 85
Śloka 86 — Total years attaching to the rāśis placed in the Kālacakra
For Kriya [Meṣa], Vṛṣa, Yuga [Mithuna] and Karka the years are a hundred, eighty-five, eighty-three and eighty-six; and the same are declared likewise for their trines.

In whichever pāda the birth falls, the daśā-years [of that pāda] are multiplied by the ghaṭīs and palas elapsed in it, and divided by fifteen. [88] What is obtained is the elapsed (bhukta) years etc.; from that one should work out the years to be enjoyed (bhogya), and the mahādaśās of the successive rāśis are to be set out as in Viṃśottarī.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 87
Śloka 88 — Kālacakra mahādaśā — bhogya, and the sequence of nine rāśi-daśās
What is obtained is the elapsed years and the rest; from that one should work out the portion yet to be enjoyed. As in Viṃśottarī, the mahādaśā of the nine rāśis is to be [reckoned].
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 88
Śloka 89 — Kālacakra daśā — alternative method for bhukta/bhogya years
The kalās (minutes of arc) elapsed in the Moon's navāṃśa (i.e. its pāda), multiplied by the [total] years of that [pāda's own daśā-sequence] and divided by two hundred — that is the elapsed (bhukta) amount; what stands beyond that is to be known as the portion yet to be enjoyed (bhogya).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 89
Śloka 90 — Deha and jīva in the savya and apasavya cakra
In the cakra named savya, the first aṃśa is declared by the good to be the deha, and likewise the last aṃśa is the jīva; in the apasavya it is by reversal.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 90
Śloka 91 — Direction of counting in savya vs apasavya
In the savya [cakra] count from the deha onward, and in the apasavya from the jīva onward, O Muni; having so reckoned, the wise should declare the result accordingly.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 91
Śloka 92 — The threefold motion of rāśis in the Kālacakra
In the Kālacakra a threefold motion of the rāśis is declared, called by the names māṇḍūkī (the frog's), markaṭī (the monkey's), and siṃhāvalokana (the lion's backward glance).

Śloka 93 — Definition of the three gatis
Going by leaping over a rāśi is called the māṇḍūkī motion; going backward from there is held to be the one named markaṭī; and motion from the fifth as far as the ninth is siṃhāvalokana.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 93
Śloka 94 — Which rāśi-transitions are māṇḍūkī and markaṭī
The māṇḍūkī [motion occurs] between Kanyā (aṅganā) and Karka, and between Siṃha (hari) and Mithuna (nṛyugma); likewise between Karka (kulīra) and Siṃha the motion is called markaṭī.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 94

Śloka 105 — Special results of particular rāśi-to-rāśi steps
And when it has passed from Siṃha into Mithuna, disease of the wife assuredly occurs; but when it has passed from Karka into Siṃha, destruction of the embodied ones results.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 105
Śloka 106 — Dhanus→Meṣa step; benefic/malefic association
Again, when it has gone from Dhanus into Meṣa, one should know the death of a paternal kinsman [the father's brother]. When [the rāśi is] joined by a cruel graha one should indicate fear; when joined by a benefic, auspiciousness.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 106
Śloka 107 — General principle: read the Kālacakra daśā from rāśi and graha together
Whatever auspicious or inauspicious result belongs to the Kālacakra daśā, that is to be declared from both the rāśi and the graha, according to the apportionment stated earlier.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 107
Śloka 108 — The stated results hold for all, in that daśā year and its direction
Thus, O Muni, for all men, in the year of that daśā the result shall be exactly as has been laid down; and in the [corresponding] quarter, that of the direction concerned.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 108
Śloka 109 — Direction-phala: Kanyā→Karka
When it has passed from Kanyā into Karka, there is great fruit in the eastern quarter; and resorting to a northern country, the journey will be prosperous.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 109
Śloka 110 — Direction-phala: Siṃha→Mithuna
But when it has passed from Siṃha into Mithuna, one should abandon the eastern quarter; and at the conclusion of an undertaking a journey in the south-west (nairṛti) will be comfortable.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 110
Śloka 111 — Direction-phala: Karka→Siṃha
When it has gone from Karka into Siṃha, there is loss of undertakings in the southern direction; having resorted to the south, one must then travel westward.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 111
Śloka 112 — Direction-phala: Mīna→Vṛścika and Dhanus→Makara
When it has gone from Mīna into Vṛścika, one meets with distress in the north; and when it has gone from Dhanus into Makara, there will be distress and peril.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 112
Śloka 113 — Direction-phala: Dhanus→Meṣa and Dhanus→Vṛścika
But from Dhanus into Meṣa, on a journey there is illness and the death of a relative; whereas when it has gone into Vṛścika there is happiness, wealth, and a wife and the like.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 113
Śloka 114 — Direction-phala: Siṃha→Karka; benefic/malefic modifier
When it has gone from Siṃha into Karka, the western quarter is to be shunned by the wise. With a benefic conjunction one should declare an auspicious result, but with a cruel one an inauspicious result.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 114
Śloka 115 — Kālacakrāṃśa phala — birth in Meṣa to Karka aṃśa
In the Meṣa (kriya) aṃśa one becomes a thief and a brave man; in the Vṛṣabha aṃśa, endowed with prosperity; in the Mithuna (yugma) aṃśa, possessed of knowledge; in the Karka (kulīra) aṃśa, he becomes a king.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 115
Śloka 116 — Kālacakrāṃśa phala — Siṃha to Vṛścika aṃśa
In the Siṃha aṃśa he is honoured by the king; in the Kanyā (aṅganā) aṃśa he becomes learned; in the Tulā aṃśa a royal minister; in the Vṛścika (ali) aṃśa the person is without wealth.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 116
Śloka 117 — Kālacakrāṃśa phala — Dhanus to Mīna aṃśa
In the Dhanus aṃśa he is joined with knowledge; in the Makara aṃśa a doer of evil; in the Kumbha aṃśa one whose occupation is trade; in the Mīna aṃśa possessed of wealth and grain.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 117
Śloka 118 — Malefics in the deha or jīva — death
If the deha, or else the jīva, is attended by the Sun, Rāhu, Mars, or Saturn — even by a single one of them there is death; what then need be said of a conjunction of many?
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 118
Śloka 119 — Graded malefic affliction of deha and jīva
When the deha is joined by malefics, disease; but when the jīva is joined by them, extreme fear. By two [malefics] mental anguish and illness; by three, an untimely death is declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 119
Śloka 120 — Four malefics; malefics in both deha and jīva
But by four there is death — herein there is no doubt whatever. And when the conjunction of malefic grahas is in both places, in the deha and in the jīva —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 120
Śloka 121 — Result of malefics in both; Sun and waning Moon
— there is fear from thieves and the like or from the king, and death too is certain. With the Sun [in deha or jīva], fear born of fire; with a waning Moon, fear from waters.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 121
Śloka 122 — Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Ketu in deha or jīva
With Mars, affliction from weapons; with Mercury, distress from wind-disorders is held [to occur]. With Saturn, the gulma disease in the body; and with Ketu (śikhin) too, fear from poison.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 122
Śloka 123 — Benefics in the deha or jīva
Mercury, or Jupiter, or Venus, gone into the deha or into the jīva, are givers of comfort and wealth, and likewise removers of disease and grief alike.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 123
Śloka 124 — General rule of benefic / malefic / mixed association
When [the deha or jīva] is there joined by benefics or by malefics, an auspicious or inauspicious result respectively is declared; when joined by mixed [grahas], a mixed result is to be stated. This is settled in every case.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 124
Śloka 125 — Daśā of a malefic's kṣetra vs a benefic's kṣetra
In the midst of the daśā of a malefic's kṣetra, the deha and the jīva are afflicted; but in the daśā of a benefic's kṣetra there is auspiciousness here — there is no doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 125
Śloka 126 — Mixed results from benefic-in-bad-rāśi and malefic-in-good-rāśi
A daśā falling in a bad rāśi but joined by a benefic graha, and one falling in a good rāśi but joined by a malefic graha, are respectively to be known by the wise as yielding mixed results for the native.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 126
Śloka 127 — Cakra-daśā of the lagna rāśi
Whichever rāśi stands in the lagna at the moment of a person's birth — in the Kālacakra daśā of that rāśi there is comfort free from illness.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 127
Śloka 128 — Benefic / malefic lagna rāśi; exalted grahas therein
If [that rāśi is] benefic, complete happiness; if cruel, the arising of disease in the body. If it is joined by grahas placed in their own ucca, he becomes a king honoured by the world.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 128
Śloka 129 — Cakra-daśā of the 2nd-bhāva rāśi
The result arising in the cakra-daśā of the rāśi occupying the wealth-bhāva: good food, the gaining of desired objects, and the arising of happiness from wife and sons.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 129
Śloka 130 — 2nd-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); benefic/malefic rāśi
There is skill in speech, good learning, and association with the good. In a benefic rāśi the result is thus; in a malefic rāśi it is otherwise.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 130
Śloka 131 — Cakra-daśā of the 3rd-bhāva rāśi
The result arising in the cakra-daśā of the rāśi occupying the brother-bhāva: happiness from a brother, valour, and steadfastness too, and abundant happiness.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 131
Śloka 132 — 3rd-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); benefic/malefic rāśi
Golden ornaments and fine clothing, and the arising of honour from the king. Such is the result in a benefic rāśi; in a malefic rāśi it is otherwise.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 132
Śloka 133 — Cakra-daśā of the 4th-bhāva rāśi
When the cakra-daśā runs of that rāśi which is in the fourth bhāva, then there is freedom from disease, the obtaining of wealth, and especially happiness from relatives.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 133
Śloka 134 — 4th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); benefic/malefic rāśi
Happiness born of fine garments and vehicles, and likewise that born of kingdom, land, and house. In a benefic rāśi auspiciousness is to be understood; in a malefic rāśi, the reverse of it.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 134
Śloka 135 — Cakra-daśā of the 5th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the son-bhāva, then there is happiness of wife, of kingdom, of sons, of friends, and of the body.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 135
Śloka 136 — 5th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); benefic/malefic rāśi
Advancement in good learning, fame, intellect, fortitude, and prowess. In a benefic rāśi all is auspicious; in a cruel rāśi, the reverse of it.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 136
Śloka 137 — Cakra-daśā of the 6th-bhāva rāśi
When the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the enemy-bhāva, then there is extreme fear arising from the king, fire, poison, weapons, and thieves.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 137
Śloka 138 — 6th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); cruel/benefic rāśi
Also the arising of illnesses such as pāṇḍu, gulma, and prameha. Such is the result in a cruel rāśi; in a benefic rāśi it will be part-auspicious and part-inauspicious.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 138
Śloka 139 — Cakra-daśā of the 7th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the seventh (dyūna) bhāva, then there is marriage, and happiness born of the gaining of wife and sons and the like.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 139
Śloka 140 — 7th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); full vs half result
Also unequalled fame, and the acquisition of cattle, crops, wealth, and fine garments. The result is full in a benefic rāśi, but in a cruel rāśi it is half of that.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 140
Śloka 141 — Cakra-daśā of the 8th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the death-bhāva, then one should declare sorrow born of the destruction of relatives, of wealth, and of position.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 141
Śloka 142 — 8th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); cruel/benefic rāśi
Also fear from enemies, distaste for food, and extreme destitution. In a cruel rāśi the whole of this result [occurs]; in a benefic rāśi half of it is declared.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 142
Śloka 143 — Cakra-daśā of the 9th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the fortune-bhāva, then there is constant happiness from wife, sons, house, and agriculture.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 143
Śloka 144 — 9th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); full vs half result
He is devoted to good works, of righteous mind, and there is meeting with holy people. This result is to be known as full in a benefic rāśi, but as half in a malefic rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 144
Śloka 145 — Cakra-daśā of the 10th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the kingdom-bhāva, then there is happiness of wife and children, honour from the king, and lordship.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 145
Śloka 146 — 10th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); full vs half result
Success in good works, increase of lordly wealth, and likewise the company of the good. This result is to be known as full in a benefic rāśi, but as half in a malefic rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 146
Śloka 147 — Cakra-daśā of the 11th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the gain-bhāva, then there is happiness arising from wife, sons, relatives, wealth, and clothing.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 147
Śloka 148 — 11th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); full vs slight result
There is freedom from disease, honour from the king, and constant association with the good. This result is to be known as full in a benefic rāśi, but slight in a malefic rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 148
Śloka 149 — Cakra-daśā of the 12th-bhāva rāśi
If the cakra-daśā is of that rāśi which is in the twelfth (riṣpha) bhāva, then there is pain in the body, loss of position, and fruitlessness in effort.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 149
Śloka 150 — 12th-bhāva rāśi daśā (continued); cruel/benefic rāśi
Indolence, destitution, failure of undertakings, and pointless expenditure. This result is to be known as full in a cruel rāśi, and as greater (adhika) in a benefic rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 150
Śloka 151 — Cara daśā — definition and measure of the daśā years
From the lagna up to the twelfth (vyaya) there is the daśā of the rāśis named cara; and the wise have declared its measure to be the count from the bhāva up to the lord of that bhāva.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 151
Śloka 152 — Cara daśā — direction of counting by odd/even pada
In an odd pada the reckoning is in the direct order, in a non-odd (even) pada it is by reversal — this is to be known in computing the daśā years; a pada consists of three rāśis beginning from Meṣa.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 152
Śloka 153 — The two lords of Vṛścika and of Kumbha
Vṛścika has two lords, Mars and Ketu, it is held, O Muni; and of Kumbha, Saturn and Rāhu (phaṇin, the hooded one) are declared to be the lords.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 153
Śloka 154 — Cara daśā years for the two dual-lorded rāśis — case 1
Here I state the method of knowing the daśā for those two rāśis that have two lords. If both lords are conjoined in one place and are situated in their own rāśi —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 154
Śloka 155 — Cara daśā years for dual-lorded rāśis — twelve years; case 2
— then twelve years; otherwise the measure is reckoned as one and so on. But if one is in its own kṣetra and the other stands elsewhere —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 155
Śloka 156 — Take the lord placed elsewhere; case 3 — both elsewhere
— then, taking the lord that stands elsewhere, one should derive the daśā. If the two have both gone into another rāśi, then whichever of them is endowed with strength —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 156
Śloka 157 — Counting from the stronger lord; first rule of strength
— from that one alone the daśā is to be derived by the wise, in the direct or the reverse order [as appropriate]. In deciding strength, the one having a graha [with it] is stronger than the one without a graha.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 157
Śloka 158 — Second and third rules of strength
But when grahas are present in both, the one with the greater number of grahas is to be known as the stronger. If the graha-conjunction is equal, the determination of strength is made from the strength of the rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 158
Śloka 159 — Rāśi strength order; tie-break by greater years
It is to be understood that cara, sthira, and dvisvabhāva [rāśis] are always the stronger in that ascending order. If in such a case the strength of the two rāśis is equal, the stronger is the one that yields the greater number of years.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 159
Śloka 160 — One lord exalted — take that rāśi
And if one has gone to its own ucca while the other stands elsewhere, one should take the rāśi occupied by the exalted graha, setting the other aside.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 160
Śloka 161 — Add one year for an exalted graha, drop one for a debilitated
In the presence of a graha in its ucca one should insert one year; and in that same place, for a graha in its nīca, one should drop one year.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 161
Śloka 162 (first half only — plate ends here) — Concluding injunction to weigh all the foregoing
Having thus considered everything, one should declare the result within the daśā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 162 (first half only — plate ends here)
Śloka 162 — Cara daśā — definition and direction of reckoning
According as the ninth rāśi (bhāgya) from the lagna stands in an odd pada or a not-odd pada, [the reckoning proceeds] in direct or in reverse order. That daśā — [taken] for the embodied being — is always to be known by the discerning as the one named cara.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 162
Śloka 163 — Sthira daśā — year values 7/8/9 for cara, sthira, dvisvabhāva rāśis
Now, O Muni, I shall fully declare the daśā named sthira. In the cara and the rest, the years are, in order, reckoned as seven, eight and nine.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 163
Śloka 164 — Why it is called sthira; it starts from the Brahmā-graha's rāśi; direction of motion
Because of the fixity of its daśā-years, this daśā bears the name sthira. And this daśā runs from the rāśi occupied by the Brahmā graha, O best of the twice-born. In an odd [rāśi] it proceeds onward in direct order, but in a not-odd one in reverse order.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 164
Śloka 165 — Maitreya's question — what defines the Brahmā graha?
Maitreya said: O Bhagavan, the Brahmā graha which has just now been mentioned to me by you — its defining marks you are pleased, of your grace, to make clear.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 165
Śloka 166 — Brahmā graha — first definition: strong lord of 6/8/12 in an odd rāśi, or one behind the stronger of lagna/7th
Parāśara said: Among the lords of the sixth, the eighth and the twelfth, whichever is strong and stands in an odd rāśi [is Brahmā]; and so too whichever strong one, [reckoned] from the lagna or the seventh, stands behind that.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 166
Śloka 167 — Brahmā graha — 8th lord from ātmakāraka; and the exclusion of Śani, Rāhu and Ketu
Or the lord of the eighth from the kāraka is Brahmā, or even a graha placed in that eighth. If Brahmā-hood should fall upon Tamas [Rāhu/Ketu] or upon the son of Arka [Śani], then the graha standing behind that one is Brahmā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 167
Śloka 168 — Tie-break among multiple Brahmā candidates — greater degrees, then greater strength
But when Brahmā-hood belongs to many, the graha having the greater degrees is to be known [as Brahmā]. And when the degrees are equal, the one of greater strength becomes the Brahmā graha, O Muni!
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 168
Śloka 169 — Yogārdha daśā — years are half the sum of the cara and sthira daśās
In the Yogārdha, the measure of the daśā is equal to half the sum of the two [the cara and the sthira]. This one is begun by the wise from whichever of the lagna and the seventh is the stronger.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 169
Śloka 170 — Kendrādi daśā — start from the stronger of lagna/7th, then kendras in order of strength; also from the ātmakāraka
From whichever of the lagna and the seventh is the stronger rāśi, [the daśās] of the signs proceeding by kendra and the rest [follow], according to their strength — of the rāśis [reckoned] also from the ātmakāraka —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 170
Śloka 171 — Kendrādi daśā — years reckoned as in cara daśā, counting to the graha's own sign
— such is the order of the daśās of the grahas, indeed, as proclaimed by the Munis. The daśā-years are as in the cara [daśā], counting up to the own-sign of the sky-dwellers [the grahas].
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 171
Śloka 172 — Year-count for grahas lording two rāśis — take the larger of the two counts
For a graha that lords two rāśis, the counting is thus to be made up to both; of the two, the greater number gives the daśā-years — this holds for the kāraka as well.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 172
Śloka 173 — Kāraka daśā — order from the ātmakāraka, years = distance lagna → kāraka
The Kāraka daśā is to be known [as running] in order beginning from the ātmakāraka. Whatever number results from the lagna up to the kāraka, the daśā equals that.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 173
Śloka 174 — Maṇḍūka daśā (= the old Trikūṭa) — start from the stronger of lagna/7th
And this very daśā called Maṇḍūka was formerly remembered under the name Trikūṭa. From whichever of the lagna and the seventh is the stronger rāśi — if it be odd, then in direct order —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 174
Śloka 175 — Maṇḍūka daśā — reverse order in even signs; years as in sthira daśā
— but in a not-odd [rāśi] the daśā is always to be known by the wise by the reverse. The measure of years of the daśā called Maṇḍūka is the same as that of the sthira daśā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 175
Śloka 176 — Śūla daśā — declared for knowing death; starts from the stronger of the 8th from lagna and the 8th from the 7th
Some declare the Śūla daśā for the sake of knowing death. Of the two eighth houses — from the lagna and from the seventh — whichever of those rāśis is the stronger [is the starting point].
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 176
Śloka 177 — Śūla daśā — direction of reckoning; years as in sthira; death in a strong māraka's daśā
Beginning from that, [the reckoning is] in direct order if it is odd, and in an even one it would be by the reverse. The daśās are equal [in years] as in the sthira; death [is indicated] when the māraka is strong.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 177
Śloka 178 — Trikoṇa daśā — begins from the strongest of the lagna-trikoṇa rāśis, reckoned like cara
Among the rāśis occupying the koṇas of the birth-lagna, beginning precisely from the strongest rāśi, the daśā — reckoned as in the cara — is to be known as the one born of the trikoṇa.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 178
Śloka 179 — Trikoṇa daśā — direction of reckoning; years counted up to the lord
In an odd [rāśi] one should set them out in direct order, but in a not-odd one by the reverse. Here the daśā-years are proclaimed by the learned as [counted] up to the lord.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 179
Śloka 180 — Dṛg daśā — sequence: 9th, then signs aspected by it; then 10th, then signs aspected by it
[The daśā] of the ninth from the lagna [comes first]; after that, those arising from the houses aspected by it; and then that of the tenth (āspada), and thereafter those arising from the houses aspected by that.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 180
Śloka 181 — Dṛg daśā — the 11th and its aspected signs; years as in sthira; the name explained
Then that of the eleventh (lābha), and again those born of the kṣetras aspected by it. The years are as in the sthira. Since this one has arisen by force of dṛṣṭi, it is the Dṛg daśā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 181
Śloka 182 — Dṛg daśā — direction in which the aspected signs are picked up, by modality and parity
For cara and for sthira signs the aspect [-reckoning] is by reverse order and by direct order respectively. In a dual sign (dvibha), thus: in direct order if it be odd, but in reverse order if even.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 182
Śloka 183 — Rāśi daśā (tanvādi) — definition and the bhayāta/bhabhoga computation
The daśā of the signs beginning with the lagna, sign by sign, is held to be the Rāśi daśā. The bhayāta, multiplied by twelve and divided by the bhabhoga —
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 183
Śloka 184 — Rāśi daśā — add to lagna, divide by twelve, start there in odd/even order
— the resulting quotient, in rāśis and so on, is to be joined to the lagna; then it is to be divided by twelve. From that rāśi the daśā is to be known by the wise, in direct or in reverse order according as it is odd or not-odd. Here too the daśā years are to be understood by the learned as in the sthira.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 184
Śloka 185 — Elapsed and remaining years of the running daśā (bhukta / bhogya)
The daśā-years multiplied by the elapsed degrees and divided by thirty — that is to be known as the elapsed [portion] in years and so on; the portion still to be enjoyed [is known] by subtracting it from the total measure.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 185
Śloka 186 — Pañcasvara daśā — lay out the five vowels and the consonants ka to ha below them
First one should set down, precisely in order, the group of five vowels beginning with 'a'; below the vowels one should write the letters from 'ka' to 'ha', omitting ṅa, ña and ṇa.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 186
Śloka 187 — Pañcasvara daśā — the grid is filled five by five in horizontal rows; why ṅa/ña/ṇa are dropped
[They are written] in horizontal rows precisely in order, five and five by division. The letters ṅa, ña and ṇa have not been stated, for they do not occur at the beginning of a name.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 187
Śloka 188 — Pañcasvara daśā — substitutes for ṅa/ña/ṇa; the starting vowel is that of the name's first letter
If they do occur, then they are to be taken as ga, ja and ḍa respectively. In whichever vowel [row] the first letter of one's own name falls, from that one the reckoning begins.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 188
Śloka 189 — Pañcasvara daśā — five daśā lords of twelve years each; antardaśās within
The daśā-lords are the five [vowels] in order, each held equally to be of twelve years. And the antardaśās and the rest, of the vowels, are to be known within those daśās.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 189
Śloka 190 — Varṇadā-daśā — announcement
Now, O Vipra, I declare before you the daśā named Varṇadā, by the knowledge of which people become able to pronounce upon the fruit of the āyurdāya (the allotment of lifespan).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 190
Śloka 191 — Varṇadā — counting from Meṣa or Mīna according to odd/even lagna
For those born in an odd or in a non-odd (even) lagna, the wise one (should reckon) from Meṣa and from Mīna respectively, having counted out the janma-lagna and likewise up to the horā-lagna.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 191
Śloka 192 — Varṇadā — the two numbers; sājātya vs vaijātya
Thus, by the direct and the reverse order, two numbers arise. Therein, according as (both are) odd or (both) even, there is homogeneity (sājātya); otherwise heterogeneity (vijātīyatā).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 192
Śloka 193 — Varṇadā — sum or difference, then re-count
When they are homogeneous, their sum is taken; when heterogeneous, their difference is desired. If that (result) is odd, (count) in the order from Meṣa; if it is even, in the reverse order from Mīna onward.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 193
Śloka 194 — Varṇadā rāśi defined; daśā starts from the stronger of horā-lagna and lagna
Counting in this way, the rāśi arrived at is the one called Varṇadā. Of the horā-lagna and the (janma-)lagna, whichever is the stronger — from that the daśā (is begun).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 194
Śloka 195 — Varṇadā — direction of the daśā sequence and the length of each daśā
It proceeds by the distinction of direct and reverse order according as (that rāśi) is odd or not-odd. However many rāśis distant the Varṇadā stands from the lagna, of just that many years (is its daśā). — Thus, from the daśā-years of the twelve bhāvas, the daśā (sequence) is to be formed.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 195
Śloka 196 — Yoginī-daśā — the eight yoginīs named (first five)
Now is set forth the Yoginī-daśā as spoken by Śambhu (Śiva): Maṅgalā, Piṅgalā, Dhānyā, Bhrāmarī, and Bhadrikā;
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 196
Śloka 197 — Yoginī-daśā — remaining three yoginīs; Moon and Sun assigned
Ulkā, Siddhā and Saṅkaṭā — thus the Yoginī-daśā is eightfold. From Maṅgalā was born the Moon; from Piṅgalā, the Sun.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 197
Śloka 198 — Yoginī-daśā — Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn assigned
From Dhānyā, indeed, the preceptor of the gods (Jupiter); from Bhrāmarī, the son of Earth (Mars); from Bhadrikā, the son of the Moon (Mercury); and from Ulkā, the son of the Sun (Saturn).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 198
Śloka 199 — Yoginī-daśā — Venus and Rāhu; the computation from the birth nakṣatra
From Siddhā, the son of Bhṛgu (Venus); from Saṅkaṭā, the graha of darkness (Rāhu). Then the birth nakṣatra, joined with fire (i.e. increased by three), is divided by the Vasus (eight).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 199
Śloka 200 — Yoginī-daśā — the remainder selects the yoginī; daśā-years 1..8
The yoginīs beginning with Maṅgalā are reckoned from the remainder, counting from one onward. Their daśā-years are remembered as running, in order, from one, each greater by one. — The elapsed and the yet-to-be-enjoyed portions and the rest are to be worked out from the bhayāta and bhabhoga of that (nakṣatra).
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 200
Śloka 201 — Piṇḍa-, Aṃśa- and Naisargika-daśā — daśā years equal the computed āyus
Whatever piṇḍa-, aṃśa- and naisargika-āyus of the grahas has been computed, that is (also) the years of their daśās; they are indeed of just that measure.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 201
Śloka 202 — Piṇḍa/Aṃśa/Naisargika-daśā — order of the daśās
Of the lagna, the Sun and the Moon, the daśā of the strongest is the first. Thereafter come the daśās of the strong (grahas) occupying the kendras and the rest.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 202
Śloka 203 — Aṣṭavarga-daśā
One should pronounce the results of the daśās by the strength of the aṣṭakavargas. These daśās are remembered by the wise as the Aṣṭavarga-daśā.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 203
Śloka 204 — Sandhyā-daśā — one twelfth of the full lifespan per rāśi
The twelfth part of the full lifespan is declared to be its sandhyā, the juncture. The years of the daśās are of that measure, reckoned in the order of the rāśis beginning from the lagna.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 204
Śloka 205 — Pācaka-daśā within the Sandhyā-daśā — the computation
The sandhyā is to be multiplied by six and divided by thirty-one; the result is to be placed in the first cell, and half of it in three cells.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 205
Śloka 206 — Pācaka-daśā — the remaining eight cells; twelve divisions
Having written a third part in the eight cells, one should pronounce the result thereof. In this way one should construct the pācakas in the twelve divisions.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 206
Śloka 207 — Tārā-daśā — reckoned like Viṃśottarī from the strong kendra graha
The Tārā-daśā, which some learned men have declared to be like the Viṃśottarī, is to be reckoned from the strong graha standing in a kendra; its results correspond to its (each tārā's) name.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 207
Śloka 208 — Tārā-daśā — the nine tārās named
Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kṣema, Pratyari, Sādhaka, Vadha, Maitra, and likewise Atimaitra — nine tārās are proclaimed.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 208
Śloka 209 — Closing transition — bhukti divisions to follow
O Muni, the various divisions of the daśās have been told at length. And hereafter I shall fully declare the sub-divisions, the bhuktis, of these.
BPHS Adhyāya 47, śloka 209
