The complete Chapter on the Results of the Daśās chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 89 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka colophon (unnumbered) — Closing colophon of the chapter

Thus, in the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, the Chapter on the Results of the Daśās is concluded.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka colophon (unnumbered)

Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question — request for daśā results

Maitreya said: O Bhagavan, the manifold varieties of daśā have been declared by you, and I have listened to them. Now, of what kind is their result? Please tell it.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Two kinds of daśā-result: general and particular

Parāśara said: The result of a daśā is declared to be twofold — general and particular — arising from the intrinsic nature and the placement of the grahas; thus it is agreed by the sages.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Strength governs the result; dreṣkāṇa fixes the timing

The wise should know that the daśā-result of the grahas follows their strength. When the graha occupies the first dreṣkāṇa, one should declare the result at the commencement of the daśā.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — Middle and last dreṣkāṇa; reversal for retrograde

When it stands in the middle dreṣkāṇa, the result is to be stated for the middle of the daśā; when in the third, at the end. And for a retrograde graha this is reversed.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — General rule — auspicious daśā-lord conditions

But if at the commencement of the daśā the lord of the daśā is in the lagna, conjoined with or aspected by benefics, or is in its own rāśi, in ucca, or in a friend's rāśi, the result of that daśā is auspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — General rule — inauspicious daśā-lord conditions

But when it stands in a trika, or is combust, or is in a nīca or an enemy's rāśi, the daśā-result is declared to be bad. Now I shall state the results of the daśās.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Sun mahādaśā — auspicious placement (conditions, part 1)

When [the Sun] stands in any one of these — his mūlatrikoṇa, his own kṣetra, his own exaltation sign, or the exact exaltation point, a kendra, a trikoṇa, or the eleventh — and is there joined with the lords of the ninth and the tenth —

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Sun mahādaśā — strength conditions and first fruits

— when the Sun is endowed with strength, and is strong in his own varga as well: in that daśā there is great happiness, gain of wealth, and other auspicious things.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Sun mahādaśā — royal honour; sons if joined to lord of 5th

There is exceeding honour from the king, and the comfort of palanquins and the like. If [the Sun] is joined with the lord of the fifth, he also obtains the gain of sons.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Sun with lord of 2nd / lord of 4th

And if there be relation with the lord of wealth, one should declare affluence extending as far as elephants; if there be relation with the lord of the conveyance-house, one should declare three conveyances.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — Summary of the strong Sun's daśā

Through the king's pleasure the man becomes rich in mind and means, a commander of armies, happy, and furnished with clothes and conveyances — such is the result of the daśā of a Sun possessed of strength.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Sun mahādaśā — inauspicious placement (conditions)

When [the Sun] is in debilitation, in the sixth or eighth, in the twelfth, weak, joined with malefics, joined with Rāhu or Ketu, or joined with the lord of an evil house —

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Sun mahādaśā — evil fruits (part 1)

— in that daśā there is great affliction, destruction of wealth and grain, the wrath of the king, dwelling abroad, punishment by the king, and loss of money.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Sun mahādaśā — evil fruits (part 2)

Affliction by fever, loss of reputation, hostility with kinsmen and friends, fear of the father's destruction, and indeed inauspiciousness in the home.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Sun mahādaśā — evil fruits (part 3); benefic mitigation

Mental torment in the father's circle, and likewise hatred from people. But if the Sun is joined with or aspected by benefics, then in the middle of that [daśā] there is happiness now and then.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Malefic aspect gives wholly evil fruit; transition to the Moon

If [the Sun] is aspected by a malefic graha, the wise one should declare an evil result. Thus, in brief, the daśā-result of the Sun has here been told; now, following the Viṃśottarī, I shall state the daśā-result of the Moon.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Moon mahādaśā — auspicious placement (conditions, part 1)

When the full Moon, endowed with strength, is in his own ucca or his own kṣetra, or placed in a kendra, in the eleventh, or in a koṇa, and is joined with a benefic graha —

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Moon with strong lords of 10th/9th/4th — fruits

— and when joined with strong lords of the tenth, the ninth and the fourth, there is, from beginning to end, the coming of affluence, good fortune, wealth, grain and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — Moon daśā — auspicious domestic fruits

In the home there are auspicious ceremonies, a conveyance, audience with the king; there is accomplishment of the aim of whatever is undertaken with effort, and every kind of prosperity in the house.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 19

Śloka 20 — Moon daśā — fortune through friends and rulers

Fortune through friends and rulers, gain of dominion, great happiness, the satisfaction of the birth of sons and so forth, and a house crowded with cattle-wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 20

Śloka 21 — Moon daśā — further fruits; Moon in the 2nd, exalted or own

There is gain of horses, palanquins and the like, and of white garments and such things. When the Moon is in the wealth-house, whether exalted or in his own kṣetra —

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 21

Śloka 22 — Moon in 2nd — wealth, fortune, honour, learning

— he obtains manifold gain of wealth, increase of fortune, great happiness, special honour from the king, and the gain of learning.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 22

Śloka 23 — Moon daśā — debilitated or waning Moon

If the Moon is debilitated or waning, there will be loss of wealth. If he is in the third and endowed with strength, there is sometimes comfort and sometimes wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 23

Śloka 24 — Weak Moon with malefics — bodily and domestic ills

If [the Moon] is weak and joined with malefics, there is dullness of the body, sickness of mind, affliction from servants, loss of money, and destruction at the hands of persons of the mother's circle.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 24

Śloka 25 — Weak, malefic-joined Moon in 6th, 8th or 12th

When the Moon, weak and joined with malefics, is in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, there is the king's enmity, grief of mind, and destruction of wealth, grain and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 25

Śloka 26 — Further ills; a strong Moon in a duḥsthāna gives mixed results

There is distress to the mother, torment of mind, dullness of body, and sickness of mind. But when the Moon, though ill-placed, is endowed with strength, there is sometimes gain and sometimes comfort, and sometimes dullness of body; and by propitiation good will come about therein.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 26

Śloka 27 — Announcement of Mars's daśā results

O Vipra, I shall now declare the good and bad fruit arising in the daśā of Mars, both when he is placed in his own rāśi, in exaltation and so on, and when he is placed in debilitation or an enemy's rāśi.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 27

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 28

Śloka 29 — Mars — full strength and benefic aspect: dominion and land

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 31

Śloka 32 — Mars — wife, sons, honour early; hardship at the close

The splendour of wife and sons, and honour from the king as well: he obtains happiness at the beginning of the daśā, but at the end of the daśā one should declare hardship.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 32

Śloka 33 — Mars — inauspicious placement

When the Earth's son is placed in debilitation or another evil house and is at the same time devoid of strength and joined with, or aspected by, malefics, that daśā is a giver of what is not desired.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 33

Śloka 34 — Transition to Rāhu and Ketu — their houses and daśā results

Aquarius and Scorpio, or according to some Virgo and Pisces, are held to be their houses. In their daśā there is much comfort and abundance of wealth, grain and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 36

Śloka 37 — Rāhu/Ketu well-placed — fruits (part 1)

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 37

Śloka 38 — Rāhu/Ketu — honour abroad; benefic and yogakāraka association

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 38

Śloka 39 — Rāhu/Ketu in kendra, koṇa, 11th, 3rd or a benefic rāśi

— or when placed in a kendra, a koṇa, the eleventh, or the third, or in a benefic rāśi: through the favour of a great king there comes every kind of wealth, bringing happiness.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 39

Śloka 40 — Honour from a foreign ruler; then Rāhu in the 8th or 12th

Honour from a Yavana ruler, and the arising of well-being in the home. But when Rāhu is in the eighth or the twelfth, the fruit in his daśā is a giver of hardship.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 40

Śloka 41 — Rāhu with malefics or mārakas, or debilitated

Śloka 42 — Rāhu afflicted — losses and bodily pain

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 42

Śloka 43 — Rāhu afflicted — mid and end of daśā

But in the middle of the daśā there is comfort, and the man is one who gains in his own country; at the end of the daśā he meets with hardship, fall from position, and anguish of mind.

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 43

Śloka 44 — Announcement of Jupiter's daśā results

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 47

Śloka 48 — Jupiter — royal favour, palanquins, welfare

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 48

Śloka 49 — Gain of family and food-giving; then afflicted Jupiter

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 52

Śloka 53 — Saturn — auspicious placements (conditions)

If Manda is in his own ucca, his own kṣetra, or a friend's kṣetra, or in mūlatrikoṇa, or in the ninth, or in the aṃśa of exaltation or in his own aṃśa —

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 53

Śloka 54 — Saturn in 3rd or 11th — honour, fame, learning

Śloka 55 — Saturn — rājayoga through royal favour

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 55

Śloka 56 — Saturn — marks of Lakṣmī's glance; family gains

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 56

Śloka 57 — Saturn in 6th, 8th, 12th, debilitated or combust

BPHS Adhyāya 48, śloka 59
