Chapter on the Results of the Sudarśana Cakra — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 74

The complete Chapter on the Results of the Sudarśana Cakra chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 32 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka unnumbered closing half-verse printed after ॥ — Verdict when Sudarśana-cakra and Aṣṭakavarga disagree — the stronger prevails

In case of disagreement, whichever should be the greater — one should declare that result, in accordance with (its) strength.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka unnumbered closing half-verse printed after ॥

Śloka 1 — Introduction — the Sudarśana Cakra declared by Brahmā

Now, O vipra (Maitreya), I shall declare to you that which was of old set forth by Vidhi (Brahmā) for the welfare of the worlds — the cakra renowned as the Sudarśana.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Purpose of the cakra — results of all bhāvas and of years etc.

By it the daivajña becomes able to declare distinctly the result of all the bhāvas and of the year and the rest; hear it, therefore, with a composed mind.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Construction of the cakra — three concentric circles, twelve spokes

Three circles well drawn from a single centre-point, and twelve spokes — that, O muni, is called the Sudarśana Cakra.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — First ring from lagna, second ring from the Moon

In the first circle the bhāvas are to be written together with the grahas [that occupy them]; in the circle above it, the bhāvas reckoned from the Moon, together with their grahas.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Third ring from the Sun; three rāśis fall in each bhāva

In the circle above that, [the bhāvas reckoned] from the Sun, with their grahas, in due order. Thus a triad of rāśis comes to belong to each bhāva.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — The composite lagna-bhāva of the cakra

Here the lagna-bhāva arises as joined with [the rāśis of] the Sun, the Moon and the lagna. Having so reckoned that as the lagna, [reckon] likewise the other bhāvas along with their grahas.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Judging by graha placement; Sun good only in the first bhāva

By force of the placement of the grahas one should declare the result of those bhāvas. The Sun is said to be auspicious in the tanu (first) bhāva; elsewhere he is declared inauspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Malefic in exaltation or own rāśi is not inauspicious

A malefic standing in ucca or in its own rāśi is not held to be inauspicious. Having examined the matter thus, one should declare the auspicious and inauspicious results of the bhāvas.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Strengthening and weakening of a bhāva

A bhāva joined by, or aspected by, its own lord or by benefics indeed grows strong; joined by or aspected by malefic grahas it necessarily becomes deficient.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Occupied bhāva judged by occupant; unoccupied by aspecting graha

The result of a bhāva that holds a graha is declared to be like the graha joined to it; but for one without a graha, O muni, that result is said to be like the graha aspecting it.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — Preponderance of benefics vs malefics

The auspicious or inauspicious result is to be pronounced according to the association of good and evil grahas: when benefic grahas preponderate the result is benign, and in the contrary case inauspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Weigh aspect and conjunction by degree

There, having observed the aspect and the conjunction of the grahas, one should always declare the result of the bhāva, O muni, according to their relative degree.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Bhāva with neither conjunction nor aspect — judge by its lord

Whatever bhāva is destitute of both conjunction and aspect, O dvija, its result is to be pronounced by the learned solely according to its lord.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Saptavarga preponderance overrides intrinsic nature

Even an evil graha, when good vargas preponderate, is held to give good results; and even a good graha, when evil vargas preponderate, gives inauspicious results.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Which vargas count as good and which as evil

The vargas of those [grahas] standing in an evil [graha's rāśi], in an enemy's rāśi, or in nīca are held to be inauspicious; the vargas falling in one's own house, in ucca, or in a good graha's [rāśi] give auspicious results.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Summing rule — weigh all bhāvas and grahas before pronouncing

Having in this way truly weighed the goodness or badness of all the bhāvas and of the grahas as well, one should thereafter pronounce the result.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Maitreya's question — why did the ancient ṛṣis judge from the lagna?

Maitreya said: If the result for those born arises from the Sudarśana Cakra alone, how is it that it was declared by the ancient ṛṣis by force of the lagna [alone]?

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Maitreya asks Parāśara to resolve the doubt

Great is this doubt of mine, and no other will remove it; you alone, O tiger among munis, are worthy to cleave it, of your grace.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — When Sun, Moon and lagna fall in different rāśis — use the cakra

Parāśara said: If the Moon and the Sun stand separately, in places other than the lagna, then the declaration of results from the Sudarśana Cakra is fully approved.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 19

Śloka 20 — When two or all three coincide — judge from the lagna

But if two of them, or all three, are in one place, then, having first duly arranged the grahas and bhāvas by force of the tanu (lagna), one should declare the result.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 20

Śloka 21 — Announcement of the bhāva-daśā system on the cakra

Now I shall declare, by way of the daśā, antardaśā and the rest of the bhāvas, the result arising for the year, the month and so on, from the Sudarśana Cakra itself.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 21

Śloka 22 — Lengths of bhāva daśā, bhukti and pratyantara

The measure of the daśā, bhukti and pratyantara of the bhāvas is to be reckoned respectively as one year, one month, and two and a half days.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 22

Śloka 23 — Assigning the yearly daśās and the varṣa-lagna

Beginning from the lord of the bhāva, one should assign the daśās of the bhāvas over the years; and, reckoning each such bhāva as the varṣa-lagna, [one should know] what arises from each bhāva [counted from it].

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 23

Śloka 24 — Reading the year's result; antardaśā = one month per bhāva

The best of calculators should know the result within each such year; for the measure of the antar[daśā] is one month for each bhāva.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 24

Śloka 25 — The māsa-lagna and the monthly result

Reckoning that bhāva as the māsa-lagna, and the others in order from it, one should declare the result arising in the month as produced by the bhāvas.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 25

Śloka 26 — Pratyantara of 2½ days; benefics in kendra, koṇa and 8th

In the same way, by [periods of] two and a half days, what arises in the pratyantara is to be known. Benefics in a kendra, a koṇa, or the eighth counted from the lagna [i.e. from the lagna in force at the start of the period being judged] are givers of good.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 26

Śloka 27 — Rāhu and a mass of malefics ruin the bhāva they occupy

In whatever bhāva Saiṃhikeya (Rāhu) stands, he necessarily brings loss to that bhāva; and where many malefics stand, that too is destructive of that bhāva.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 27

Śloka 28 — Malefics in 3, 6, 11 and benefics away from 6 and 12 at the start of a year or month

With malefics gone to the third, sixth and eleventh, and benefics gone to places other than the riṣpha (twelfth) and the ari (sixth) — thus at the beginning of a year or a month the result born of the bhāvas is auspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 28

Śloka 29 (first half only) — Repeating the bhāva-daśā cycle to cover the full āyurdāya

For the āyurdāya one should assign the daśās of the bhāvas by repetition of the daśā [cycle].

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 29 (first half only)

Śloka 29 (second half only, as printed on this plate) — Reading the Sudarśana-cakra for year, month and finer periods — transition to the verdict section

Having ascertained the result produced by the Sudarśana(-cakra) — the result that arises for the year and the rest (month, day, and so on) —

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 29 (second half only, as printed on this plate)

Śloka 30 — Combining Sudarśana-cakra results with Aṣṭakavarga results; verdict when the two agree

— and likewise (having ascertained) the result produced by the aṣṭakavarga, the discrimination of the result is to be made by means of those two together. When there is agreement in both cases alike, one should declare that result in its entirety.

BPHS Adhyāya 74, śloka 30
