Chapter Describing the Results of the Rays (Raśmi) of the Grahas — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 73

The complete Chapter Describing the Results of the Rays (Raśmi) of the Grahas chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 25 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Raśmi (ray) counts of the seven grahas at exact exaltation

Listen with a one-pointed mind: I declare the rays (raśmi) of the sky-goers (the grahas). At its own ucca the rays are ten, nine, five, five, seven, eight, five, beginning from the Sun.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Zero rays at debilitation; proportional interpolation; the reduction step

At the nīca point [the rays are] zero (kha); in between, the rays are declared by proportion. Having subtracted the nīca point from the graha, if [the remainder] exceeds half [the zodiac], one should subtract it from the circle.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 2

Śloka 3 (first half) — Final formula for a graha's raśmi

Multiply [that remainder] by [the graha's] own [maximum] rays and divide by six; the results are its own rays.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 3 (first half)

Śloka 3 (second half) — Transition to the saṃskāra (refinement) of the raw raśmi

And here a refinement (saṃskāra) has been prescribed by many ācāryas, as follows.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 3 (second half)

Śloka 4 — Saṃskāra: ucca, own trikoṇa, svakṣetra, adhimitra

In ucca they are declared threefold; in one's own trikoṇa, doubled; in one's own rāśi (svakṣetra), multiplied by three and divided by two; and in the house of a great friend (adhimitra) also —

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Saṃskāra continued: adhimitra factor, mitra, śatru

— [there they are] multiplied by four (veda) and divided by three (rāma); then in a friend's rāśi, multiplied by six and divided by five; and if in an enemy's house, halved.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Saṃskāra concluded: adhiśatru, sama; loss of rays on combustion

In the house of a bitter enemy (adhiśatru), multiplied by two and divided by five; in a neutral [rāśi], no [change at all]. If the star-grahas (tārāgraha), excepting Venus and Saturn, are combust (astaṃgata) —

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 6

Śloka 7 (first half) — Combust grahas lose their rays; results follow the rays

— they become devoid of rays. Thus the result is held to depend on the rays.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 7 (first half)

Śloka 7 (second half) – 8 — Phala for a raśmi total of 1–5 and 6–10

If the ray-figure comes to between one and five, [such men are] poor, sorrowful and servants, even though born in the noblest family. Beyond that, up to ten, [they are] burden-bearers and destitute.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 7 (second half) – 8

Śloka 8 — Phala of a total raśmi-count of 1–5 and of above 5 up to 10

They are poor, afflicted with sorrow, and servants, even though born in an eminent family. Beyond that (i.e. above five), up to ten, they are bearers of burdens and destitute.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 8

Śloka 9 (first half) — Phala for 6–10 concluded

— and such men indeed become bereft of wife, sons and home.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 9 (first half)

Śloka 9 (second half) — Phala for a raśmi total of 11

When the rays amount to eleven, people have few sons and little wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 9 (second half)

Śloka 10 — Phala for raśmi totals 12 and 13

With twelve (kara-indu), [they are] of scant wealth, rogues, fools and feeble. When the rays amount to thirteen, [they are] thieves, penniless, and the lowest of their family.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — Phala for a raśmi total of 14

With fourteen (veda-indu), [one is] steadfast in dharma, a protector of his own kinsfolk, engaged in the occupation inherited from his lineage, wise, and held to be of abundant wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Phala for a raśmi total of 15

With fifteen rays, [one is] endowed with virtue and knowledge, foremost in his own lineage, and wealthy — so says the Lotus-born (Brahmā).

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Phala for raśmi totals 16 through 20

Above that, in due order, [they are] lords of their family, possessed of many servants, householders with large families, renowned, thronged with people, and full of happiness.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Phala for raśmi totals 21 and 22

Now, with twenty-one rays, [one is] the supporter of fifty people; but when they measure twenty-two (netra-dvi), the one born is a giver and full of compassion.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Phala for a raśmi total of 23, and for 24–30

When they equal twenty-three, [one is] possessed of happiness, prosperity and good character. Beyond that, up to thirty, [he is] wealthy and endowed with every strength.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Phala for 24–30 continued; and for 31–40

— dear to the king, of sharp intellect, and surrounded by many people. Above this, [they] are governors of provinces, up to forty (kha-veda) rays.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Scale of dependants for 31–40; and phala for 41–50

[They are] supporters of from one hundred up to a thousand [people]. Above this, [he is] a king, up to fifty rays.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Phala above 50 rays; and the general rule of application

But with rays greater than that, [he is] a universal sovereign, a lord of the earth. Likewise, according to the rays arising from the grahas at the time of birth —

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — Results to be declared with regard to jāti and lineage

— one should declare the result for those born, in conformity with their jāti and lineage: a brāhmaṇa [with abundant rays becomes] devoted to sacrifice, a kṣatriya a universal sovereign,

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 19

Śloka 20 (first half) — Varṇa-conditioned results concluded

— a vaiśya is to be known as [becoming] a king, and a śūdra as endowed with grain and wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 20 (first half)

Śloka 20 (second half) – 21 (first half) — Rays of a graha approaching ucca vs. approaching nīca

The rays of a sky-dweller (graha) that is moving toward its exaltation (tuṅga) give greater good results; but the rays of one moving toward its debilitation are held to give lesser results than that.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 20 (second half) – 21 (first half)

Śloka 21 (second half) – 22 — Colophon rule — no prediction without computing the rays

The result is not to be pronounced by the wise without knowledge of the rays; for it can be known only by means of the rays of the sky-goers. Therefore, having worked out the rays of the grahas, one should declare the result.

BPHS Adhyāya 73, śloka 21 (second half) – 22
