Śloka 1 — Birth on kṛṣṇa-pakṣa Caturdaśī; the tithi divided into six parts — first part

पक्षेऽसिते चतुर्दश्यां जन्म चेदशुभं स्मृतम् । षड्भिर्भक्ते चतुर्दश्या माने तु प्रथमे यदि ॥ १ ॥

If birth occurs on the Caturdaśī of the dark fortnight, it is declared inauspicious. But if the measure (duration) of the Caturdaśī be divided by six, and [the birth falls] in the first [part] —

Śloka 2 — Results of birth in the first, second, third and fourth sixth-parts of the tithi

जनुर्भवेच्छुभं तर्हि द्वितीये चेन्मृतिः पितुः । तृतीये मातृमरणं चतुर्थे मातुलक्षतिः ॥ २ ॥

— then the birth is auspicious. If in the second [part], death of the father; in the third, death of the mother; in the fourth, destruction of the maternal uncle.

Śloka 3 — Results for the fifth and sixth parts; injunction to perform śānti

पञ्चमे वंशनाशः स्यात् षष्ठे सम्पत्तिसंक्षयः । अपि वाऽऽत्मविनाशः स्या-दतः शान्तिं समाचरेत् ॥ ३ ॥

In the fifth [part] there would be destruction of the lineage; in the sixth, the wasting away of wealth, or else the destruction of one's own self. Therefore let the śānti rite be performed.

Śloka 4 — Making the golden image of Śiva for the rite

शिवस्वर्णमयीं मूर्तिं यथाशक्ति विनिर्मिताम् । शुभस्रग्वसनोपेतां वृषारूढां मनोरमाम् ॥ ४ ॥

A golden image of Śiva, fashioned according to one's means, furnished with auspicious garland and garment, mounted upon the bull, delightful [to behold] —

Śloka 5 — Further iconography of the image; the wise man should worship it

भाले बालेन्दुलसितां नेत्रत्रयविभूषिताम् । वरप्रदामभयदां द्विभुजां पूजयेद् बुधः ॥ ५ ॥

— shining with the crescent moon upon the forehead, adorned with three eyes, granting boons and granting freedom from fear, two-armed: such [an image] the wise man should worship.

Śloka 6 — Invocation with Vāruṇa mantras; worship with the Tryambaka mantra; the pot in the SE corner

मन्त्रैस्तु वारुणैरावा-हनं ‘त्र्यम्बक’ मित्यतः । अभ्यर्चनं, ततस्तद्व-न्मन्त्रैराग्नेयकुम्भतः ॥ ६ ॥

The invocation [of the deity] is with the Vāruṇa mantras; thereafter the worship is with the 'Tryambaka' [mantra]; then, likewise with those same mantras, [beginning] from the pot [set] in the āgneya (south-east) quarter —

Śloka 7 — Worship, recitation of the two sūktas, japa, and abhiṣeka of Śiva

समारभ्यार्चयेद् भक्तो जपेत् सूक्तद्वयं पुनः । क‘द्रुद्रे’तिजपं कुर्या-दभिषेकं शिवस्य च ॥ ७ ॥

— beginning [from there] the devotee should worship; then he should recite the two sūktas; he should perform the japa beginning 'kad rudrāya…', and [then] the abhiṣeka of Śiva.

Śloka 8 — Worship of the grahas; the materials for the homa

ग्रहाभिपूजनं-भक्ति-पूर्वकं कारयेत्तथा । समिद्घृतचरून् तद्वत्तिलान् माषान् ससर्षपान् ॥ ८ ॥

Likewise he should have the worship of the grahas performed with devotion; and so too [are to be prepared] the fuel-sticks, ghee and caru, sesame, black gram, together with mustard seeds —

Śloka 9 — 108 or 28 oblations in the blazing fire; sesame cast with the Tryambaka mantra

जुहुयाज्प्रज्वलिते जात-वेदस्यष्टोत्तरं शतम् । अष्टाविंशतिसंख्यं वा तिलान् ‘त्र्यम्बक’तः क्षिपेत् ॥ ९ ॥

— he should offer [them] into the blazing fire (jātavedas) one hundred and eight times, or twenty-eight times; and he should cast sesame seeds [into the fire] with the 'Tryambaka' mantra.

Śloka 10 — Homa for the grahas with the vyāhṛtis; abhiṣeka of the child and the parents

ग्रहाणां हवनं तद्वत् कुर्याद् व्याहृतिभिस्ततः । अभिषिञ्चेत् सुतं चापि पितरौ स्याच्छुभं तदा ॥ १० ॥

Likewise he should perform the homa for the grahas, and thereafter [offerings] with the vyāhṛtis. He should then sprinkle (consecrate) the son and also the parents; then there will be auspiciousness.

Śloka 11 — Feeding brāhmaṇas and giving dakṣiṇā; the resulting welfare

ब्राह्मणान् भोजयेद् भक्त्या दक्षिणामपि कर्मणः । कर्मान्ते शक्तितो दद्यात् ततः क्षेममवाप्नुयात् ॥ ११ ॥

He should feed brāhmaṇas with devotion, and at the conclusion of the rite he should give the dakṣiṇā for the rite according to his capacity; thereby he will obtain welfare.
