Chapter on the Pacification-Rite for a Child Born under the Same Nakṣatra (as a Parent or Sibling) — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 90

The complete Chapter on the Pacification-Rite for a Child Born under the Same Nakṣatra (as a Parent or Sibling) chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 7 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Ekanakṣatra doṣa — birth in the janma-nakṣatra of a parent or sibling

If the birth falls in the janma-nakṣatra of the parents, or likewise in that of a brother, then the death of the two of them — that is, of the native and of that relative — or else of one of the two, will certainly follow; so it is settled.

Śloka 2 — Announcement of the rite + selection of the muhūrta day

I shall state the rite of pacification declared by the ancient ṛṣis — listen! (Let it be done) under an auspicious nakṣatra, on a good day free of the three: riktā (tithi), amāvāsyā, and avama (the decayed or omitted tithi), and the like.

Śloka 3 — Candra-bala / Tārā-bala requirement; installing the nakṣatra image

On such a day, endowed with Candra-bala and Tārā-bala, let the discerning one perform the pacification. (He should worship) a well-wrought image of the nakṣatra, set up in the Īśāna quarter —

Śloka 4 — Worship of the nakṣatra image on the kalaśa; covering with red cloth

— (in the Īśāna corner) of the fire; upon a kalaśa he should worship it with the nakṣatra-mantra. Then the knower of mantras, having covered it with a red garment, (should wrap) it, clothed as it is,

Śloka 5 — Agnimukha per one's own śākhā; 108 oblations

— he should wrap it, and perform the agnimukha by the procedure laid down in one's own (Vedic) śākhā. With that very mantra stated before he should offer one hundred oblations together with eight (i.e. 108).

BPHS Adhyāya 90, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Oblation-materials, prāyaścitta ending, and the sprinkling by the ācārya

(The offering is to be made) with fuel-sticks, sākalya and ghee, concluding with the prāyaścitta (expiatory oblation). Thereafter the ācārya should sprinkle (with the kalaśa water) the parents, or the brothers.

BPHS Adhyāya 90, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Feeding brāhmaṇas with dakṣiṇā; destruction of the nakṣatra-doṣa

Afterwards he should feed brāhmaṇas, preceded by the giving of dakṣiṇā. When this is done, the blemish arising from the (shared) nakṣatra is destroyed.
