Chapter on the Results of the Third (Sahaja / Co-born) Bhāva — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 15
अथ तृतीय (सहज) भावफलाध्यायः
The complete Chapter on the Results of the Third (Sahaja / Co-born) Bhāva chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 15 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Opening address to Maitreya; benefics in/aspecting the 3rd give siblings
अथ मैत्रेय ! ते वच्मि फलं सहजभावजम् । सहजे सशुभे, दृष्टे सौम्यैर्वा भ्रातृमान् जनः ॥ १ ॥
Now, O Maitreya, I shall declare to you the results arising from the sahaja bhāva (third house). If the third bhāva is joined with benefics, or is aspected by benefics, the person is possessed of brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — 3rd lord with Mars aspecting or occupying the 3rd — happiness from brothers
सभौमो भ्रातृभावेशो भ्रातृभावमभीक्षते । भ्रातृक्षेत्रगतो वापि सुखं भ्रातुर्विनिर्दिशेत् ॥ २ ॥
If the lord of the bhāva of brothers, together with Mars (Bhauma), aspects the bhāva of brothers, or else is posited in the field (rāśi) of brothers, one should declare happiness from brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — The same two with pāpa-yoga or in a pāpa rāśi — destroyers of siblings
तौ पापयोगतः पाप-क्षेत्रयोगेन वा पुनः । उत्पाद्य सहजान् सद्यो निहतो नात्र संशयः ॥ ३ ॥
Those two (the 3rd lord and Mars), again, through conjunction with malefics, or through being placed in a malefic's rāśi, having produced the co-born, quickly destroy them — there is no doubt in this.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Feminine vs masculine grahas in the 3rd — sisters vs brothers
स्त्रीग्रहो भ्रातृभावेशो भ्रातृगः स्त्रीग्रहोऽथवा । भगिनी स्यादथो भ्राता पुंगृहे पुंग्रहो यदि ॥ ४ ॥
If the lord of the bhāva of brothers is a feminine graha, or if a feminine graha occupies the bhāva of brothers, there will be a sister; and if a masculine graha is in a masculine house (rāśi), there will be a brother.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Mixed grahas give mixed results; 3rd lord and Mars in the 8th afflicted
मिश्रे मिश्रफलं ज्ञेयं बलाबल-विवेकतः । सहजेशकुजौ रन्ध्रे पापैर्युक्तौ च वीक्षितौ ॥ ५ ॥
When there is a mixture (of feminine and masculine grahas), a mixed result is to be known, by discrimination of their strength and weakness. If the lord of the third and Mars are in the randhra (eighth) bhāva, conjoined with and aspected by malefics —
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Destroyers of siblings; 3rd lord or kāraka well placed gives sibling happiness
सोदरघ्नौ, केन्द्रकोण-स्वोच्च-मित्र स्ववर्गगे । भ्रातृपे कारके वापि, भ्रातृभावसुखं दिशेत् ॥ ६ ॥
— those two are destroyers of the co-born. But when the lord of the brothers' bhāva, or else the kāraka (Mars), is in a kendra, a koṇa, its ucca, a friend's house, or its own varga, one should indicate happiness of the bhāva of brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — 3rd lord or kāraka with benefics, or strong bhāva — increase of siblings
भ्रातृपे कारके वापि सौम्यैर्युक्तेऽथवेक्षिते । भावे वा बलसंयुक्ते भ्रातृवृद्धिः प्रजायते ॥ ७ ॥
If the lord of the brothers' bhāva, or else the kāraka, is joined with or aspected by benefics, or if the bhāva itself is endowed with strength, increase of brothers (and sisters) comes about.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Mercury in 3rd, Moon with 3rd lord, Saturn with kāraka — an elder sister first
भ्रातृभे बुधसंयुक्ते तदीशे चन्द्रसंयुते । कारके मन्दसंयुक्ते भगिन्येकाग्रतो भवेत् ॥ ८ ॥
When the bhāva of brothers is joined by Mercury, when its lord is joined by the Moon, and when the kāraka is joined by Saturn (Manda), there will be one sister born earlier (than the native).
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — One younger brother, the third dies; kāraka with Rāhu and 3rd lord in nīca
पश्चात् सहोदरोऽप्येक स्तृतीयस्तु मृतो भवेत् । कारके राहुसंयुक्ते विक्रमेशे तु नीचगे ॥ ९ ॥
Afterwards there will be one co-born as well, but the third will die. If the kāraka is joined with Rāhu, and the lord of the vikrama (third) bhāva is in its nīca —
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — No younger siblings but three elder; 3rd lord in kendra, kāraka in trikoṇa from it
पश्चात् सहोदराभावः—पूर्वं तु तत्त्रयं भवेत् । भ्रातृस्थानाधिपे केन्द्रे कारके तत्त्रिकोणगे ॥ १० ॥
— there will be an absence of co-born afterwards (younger), but earlier (elder) there will be three of them. If the lord of the station of brothers is in a kendra, and the kāraka is in a trikoṇa from it —
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Twelve co-born; two elder, and the third from oneself
जीवेन सहितेऽप्युच्चे वाच्या द्वादश सोदराः । तत्राग्रजद्वयं तद्वत् स्वस्माचापि तृतीयकः ॥ ११ ॥
— and moreover is in its ucca joined with Jupiter (Jīva), twelve co-born are to be declared. Among them two are elder-born; and likewise the third counted from oneself —
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — The 3rd, 7th, 9th and 12th siblings die; the remaining six are long-lived
सप्तमो नवमश्चैव द्वादशश्च मृतो भवेत् । ज्ञेयाः सहोदराः शेषाः षट् स्युर्दीर्घायुषान्विताः ॥ १२ ॥
— and the seventh, and the ninth, and the twelfth will die. The remaining co-born, six in number, are to be known as endowed with long life.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Mars with the 11th lord or Jupiter, Moon in the 3rd — seven co-born
लाभेशेन युते भौमे गुरुणा सहितेऽपि वा । सहजस्थानगे चन्द्रे सप्तसंख्याः सहोदराः ॥ १३ ॥
When Mars is joined with the lord of the lābha (eleventh) bhāva, or else is joined with Jupiter, and the Moon occupies the station of the co-born, the co-born number seven.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Moon in the 3rd aspected by a masculine graha — brothers; by Venus — sisters
सहजस्थानगे चन्द्रे पुंग्रहेणैव वीक्षिते । भ्रातरस्तत्र कविना भगिन्यः संयुतेक्षिते ॥ १४ ॥
When the Moon occupies the station of the co-born and is aspected by a masculine graha alone, there are brothers; when it is joined with or aspected by Kavi (Venus), there are sisters.
BPHS Adhyāya 15, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Sun, Saturn and Mars in the 3rd destroy elder / younger / both
अग्रजं दिनकृद्धन्ति मन्दः पृष्ठगतं तथा । उभयं भूमिजो हन्ति सहजस्थो विनिश्चयात् ॥ १५ ॥
The Sun (Dinakṛt), placed in the sahaja bhāva, destroys the elder-born; Saturn (Manda) likewise the one born behind (younger); and Mars (Bhūmija) destroys both — this is certain.
