The complete Chapter on the Effects of the Fifth (Progeny) Bhāva chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 32 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Opening of the fifth-bhāva chapter; lagneśa and pañcameśa in the 5th

Now I declare the fruit of the fifth bhāva; hear it, O twice-born one! When the lord of the lagna and the lord of the fifth are both seated in the fifth bhāva —

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Full happiness from sons; sonlessness when the 5th lord is in a duḥsthāna

— or when they are placed in a kendra or a koṇa, there is full happiness arising from sons. When the lord of the fifth (sutéśa) has gone to the sixth, the eighth or the twelfth, there is sonlessness.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Combust / afflicted / weak 5th lord — no son, or the son dies

If the lord of the fifth is combust, oppressed by malefics, and weak, no son is born to him; and even if one is born, he meets with death.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — 5th lord in the 6th, lagneśa with Mars — death of the first child

When the lord of progeny is in the sixth house and the lord of the lagna is joined with Mars, the first-born child dies, and the wife becomes a kāka-vandhyā (a woman who bears but one child).

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Debilitated 5th lord in a trika; Ketu and Mercury in the 5th

If the lord of progeny stands in nīca and is posted in the trika beginning with the sixth, and if Ketu and Mercury are in the fifth, the wife becomes a kāka-vandhyā.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Debilitated 5th lord not aspecting the 5th, with Saturn and Mercury there

Where the lord of the fifth, gone to debilitation, does not aspect the house of progeny, and where Saturn and Mercury are stationed (in the fifth), kāka-vandhyā-hood is obtained.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — 9th lord in the lagna, debilitated 5th lord, Ketu-Mercury in the 5th — son only with difficulty

If the lord of the ninth abides in the body-house (lagna), the lord of the fifth is debilitated, and Ketu and Mercury are in the fifth, one should declare a son (obtained) only through hardship.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — 5th lord in a trika, or debilitated, or in an enemy's house, yet in the 5th

If the lord of the fifth is placed in the trika beginning with the sixth (the 6th, 8th or 12th), or else, being debilitated or occupying an enemy's sign, is placed in the fifth — one should declare a son obtained only with great effort.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Adopted sons — 5th in Mercury's or Saturn's sign with Saturn and Gulika

When the house of progeny is a sign of Mercury, or again of Saturn, and it is joined or aspected by Saturn together with Māndi (Gulika), then the sons are of the 'given' (adopted) sort and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Sun and Moon in one rāśi and one aṃśa — reared by three mothers or two fathers

When the lord of the fifth stands in a movable rāśi, the Moon is joined with Rāhu, and Saturn has gone to the house of progeny, one should say the child is begotten of another.

When Jupiter is in the eighth from the Moon, the Moon is in the eighth from the lagna, and these are aspected or joined by malefic grahas, the one born is sprung from a paramour.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Exalted 5th lord in the 2nd or a trikoṇa with Jupiter — good fortune through sons

If the lord of the house of progeny is in his own exaltation and, counted from the lagna, occupies the second or a trikoṇa, and is joined or aspected by Jupiter, he attains the good fortune of sons.

BPHS Adhyāya 17, śloka 16
