Śloka 1 — Maitreya's question: which yogas cause poverty

विविधा वित्तदा योगा उदिता भवताऽधुना । कथ्यतां भगवन् ! योगा ये स्युर्दारिद्र्यकारिणः ॥ १ ॥

Maitreya said: Manifold wealth-giving yogas have now been declared by you. Tell me, O Bhagavan, which are the yogas that produce poverty.

BPHS Adhyāya 43, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Lagneśa in the 12th and 12th lord in lagna, joined/aspected by a māraka lord

लग्नेशे रिष्फगे रिष्फाधिपे लग्नगते सति । मारकेशयुते दृष्टे निर्धनो मनुजो भवेत् ॥ २ ॥

When the lord of the lagna is in the riṣpha (12th) bhāva and the lord of the 12th is placed in the lagna, and (these) are conjoined with or aspected by a māraka lord, the person becomes destitute.

Śloka 3 — Lagneśa in the 6th and 6th lord in lagna with a māraka lord

लग्नपे रिपुगे लग्नगते रिपुपतावपि । मारकेशयुते दृष्टे जातः स्यान्निर्धनो नरः ॥ ३ ॥

When the lord of the lagna is in the ripu (6th) bhāva and likewise the lord of the 6th is placed in the lagna, and (they are) conjoined with or aspected by a māraka lord, the person born is destitute.

Śloka 4 — Lagna and Moon with Ketu, lagneśa in the 8th, with a māraka lord

लग्नेन्दू केतुना युक्तौ, लग्नेशे निधनं गते । मारकेशयुते दृष्टे जातो वै निर्धनो भवेत् ॥ ४ ॥

When the lagna and the Moon are joined by Ketu, and the lord of the lagna has gone to the nidhana (8th) bhāva, being conjoined with or aspected by a māraka lord, the one born is indeed destitute.

Śloka 5 — Papa-joined lagneśa in a trika, 2nd lord in the 6th rāśi or nīca

षष्ठाष्टमव्ययगते लग्नेशे पापसंयुते । वित्तपेऽरिभगे नीचे राजवंश्योऽपि निर्धनः ॥ ५ ॥

When the lord of the lagna, conjoined with a malefic, is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and the lord of wealth (2nd lord) is in the 6th rāśi or in nīca, then even one born of a royal line is destitute.

Śloka 6 — Lagneśa with a trika lord, malefic-aspected or with Śani, unaspected by benefics

लग्नेशे त्रिकनाथेन युक्ते पापेक्षितेऽथवा । मन्दान्विते तत्र सद्भिरदृष्टे निर्धनो जनः ॥ ६ ॥

When the lord of the lagna is conjoined with a lord of a trika (6th, 8th, 12th) and is either aspected by a malefic or else joined there by Manda (Śani), and is unaspected by the benefics, the person is destitute.

Śloka 7 — 5th lord in the 6th and 9th lord in the 12th, aspected by a māraka lord

मन्त्रेशो धर्मनाथश्च रिपुरिष्फस्थितौ क्रमात् । दृष्टौ चेन्मारकेशेन जातः स्यान्निर्धनो नरः ॥ ७ ॥

If the lord of counsel (the 5th lord) and the lord of dharma (the 9th lord) are situated respectively in the ripu (6th) and the riṣpha (12th), and are aspected by a māraka lord, the person born is destitute.

Śloka 43.8

पापग्रहे लग्नगते राज्यधर्माधिपौ विना । / मारकेशयुते दृष्टे जातः स्यान्निर्धनो नरः ॥ ८ ॥

When a malefic graha occupies the lagna — excepting the lords of the rājya (10th) and dharma (9th) bhāvas — and it is joined by or aspected by the lord of a māraka bhāva, the man born will be without wealth.

त्रिकाधिपा यत्र भावे तदीशाश्च त्रिके स्थिताः । / क्रूरेक्षितयुताश्चापि जातो दुःखी च निर्धनः ॥ ९ ॥

In whichever bhāva the lords of the trika stand, if the lords of those bhāvas in turn stand in a trika, and are moreover aspected by or joined with cruel grahas, the one born is sorrowful and without wealth.

Śloka 43.10

चन्द्राक्रान्तनवांशेशो मारकेशयुतो यदि । / मारकस्थानगो वापि निर्धनो जातको भवेत् ॥ १० ॥

If the lord of the navāṁśa occupied by the Moon is joined with the lord of a māraka bhāva, or else himself occupies a māraka-sthāna, the native becomes without wealth.

Śloka 43.11

लग्नेशतन्नवांशेशा-वरिरन्ध्रव्ययस्थितौ । / मारकेशयुतौ दृष्टौ जातोऽसौ निर्धनो नरः ॥ ११ ॥

When the lord of the lagna and the lord of the lagna's navāṁśa are both situated in the ari (6th), randhra (8th) or vyaya (12th), and are joined by or aspected by the lord of a māraka bhāva, that man born is without wealth.

Śloka 43.12

शुभस्थानगताः पापाः पापस्थानगताः शुभाः । / धनार्त्तो जायते बालो भोजनेन प्रपीडितः ॥ १२ ॥

When the malefics occupy the auspicious sthānas and the benefics occupy the inauspicious sthānas, the child born is distressed for wealth and tormented even in the matter of food.

Śloka 43.13

त्रिकाधीशयुताः खेटाः कोणनाथेक्षणोज्झिताः । / दशापाके तु ते ज्ञेया वित्तनाशविधायकाः ॥ १३ ॥

Those grahas that are joined with the lords of the trika and are bereft of the aspect of the koṇa lords are to be known, at the ripening of their daśā, as bringers of the destruction of wealth.

लग्नाद् वा कारकाद् वापि रन्ध्रे रिष्फे द्विजोत्तम ! । / कारकाङ्गपयोर्दृष्ट्या निःस्वो जातो भवेद् ध्रुवम् ॥ १४ ॥

O best of the twice-born! When the randhra (8th) and riṣpha (12th), reckoned either from the lagna or from the kāraka, are aspected by the kāraka and by the lord of the lagna, the one born becomes destitute — of that there is no doubt.

Śloka 43.15

कारकात् कारकेशस्तु लग्नतो लग्नपोऽन्तिमम् । / पश्येतां चेन्नरस्तर्हि व्ययशीलो न संशयः ॥ १५ ॥

If the lord of the kāraka, reckoned from the kāraka, and the lord of the lagna, reckoned from the lagna, both look upon the last bhāva, then the man is of spending disposition — there is no doubt of it.

Śloka 43.16

सबाधकान् निःस्वयोगान् वच्मि सम्प्रति ते मुने । / वित्तस्थौ कुजसौरी तु कथितौ धननाशकौ ॥ १६ ॥

O muni! I now declare to you the destitution-yogas together with their obstructing factors. Mars and Saturn placed in the vitta (2nd) bhāva are declared to be destroyers of wealth.

Śloka 43.17

बुधेक्षितौ महावित्तं कुरुतो नियतं द्विज ! । / निःस्वतां कुरुते तत्र रविर्नित्यं यमेक्षितः ॥ १७ ॥

But if those two are aspected by Budha they assuredly produce great wealth, O twice-born! There, the Sun, when aspected by Yama (Saturn), always produces destitution.

Śloka 43.18

महाधनयुतं ख्यातं शन्यदृष्टः करोत्यसौ । / एवमेव फलं सौरौ वित्तस्थेऽर्केक्षिते वदेत् ॥ १८ ॥

That same [Sun], when unaspected by Śani, makes the native renowned and possessed of great wealth. Exactly the same result should be declared when Saturn stands in the vitta (2nd) bhāva aspected by the Sun.
