Chapter on the Results of the Cara and other Rāśi Daśās — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 51

The complete Chapter on the Results of the Cara and other Rāśi Daśās chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 97 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Transition — Parāśara announces the phala of the cara/sthira rāśi daśās

Parāśara said: Those daśās beginning with the cara and sthira (rāśi daśās) which were declared earlier — their fruit, whether auspicious or inauspicious, I now tell you.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Master principle — judge each bhāva's daśā by the strength of its lord

In describing the fruits of the bhāvas from the lagna up to the twelfth (riṣpha), one should declare them as is fitting, purely according to the strength of each respective bhāva-lord.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Three grades of result by bhāva-lord strength

When the bhāva-lord is strong, the full fruit of that bhāva is declared. Likewise, when the strength is middling, a middling fruit; and when it is slight, one should assign only a slight fruit.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — Malefics in the 2nd and 8th from the daśā rāśi

O Vipra! When the rāśi that gives the daśā has its eighth (randhra) and second occupied by malefic grahas, that daśā gives sorrow.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — Malefics vs benefics in the 3rd and 6th from the daśā rāśi

With a malefic gone to the third and sixth (from the daśā rāśi), victory and the like are declared; but if benefic grahas occupy those places, defeat indeed results.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 5

Śloka 6 — Any graha in the lagna gives gain; benefic-joined daśā rāśi (protasis)

When either a benefic or a malefic is placed in the lagna, gain is certain. O Dvija, when the daśā-giving rāśi is joined by benefic grahas —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 6

Śloka 7 — Daśā rāśi in a benefic's kṣetra; benefic kṣetra with a malefic on it

— or lies in a benefic's kṣetra, then the daśā-fruit of that rāśi is auspicious indeed. But when a benefic's kṣetra is joined by a malefic, first there is good, and thereafter bad.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 7

Śloka 8 — Malefic kṣetra with benefic on it; malefic kṣetra with malefic on it

In a malefic's ṛkṣa joined by a benefic, there is happiness first and unhappiness thereafter. In a malefic's kṣetra joined by a malefic, that daśā gives sorrow of every kind.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 8

Śloka 9 — Benefic kṣetra with both benefics and malefics on it

O Dvija, when the daśā rāśi is a benefic's kṣetra and is joined by both malefics and benefics, hardship comes first and happiness afterwards — this arises without any doubt.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 9

Śloka 10 — Summary of kṣetra rule; benefics in the 2nd and 5th

In a benefic's kṣetra an auspicious result is to be pronounced, and in a malefic's ṛkṣa an inauspicious one. With a benefic in the second and the fifth, the king's affection and victory are assured.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 10

Śloka 11 — Malefic in 2nd/5th; benefic in 4th and 8th

But if a malefic graha is placed there, the fruit of that daśā is bad. A benefic in the fourth gives good and comfort, and a benefic in the eighth gives freedom from disease.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 11

Śloka 12 — Benefic in the 9th; the contrary and mixed cases

With a benefic in the ninth, there is growth of dharma and comfort through elders. In the contrary case the reverse occurs; and where there is a mixture, a mixed result is declared.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 12

Śloka 13 — Malefics on the daśā rāśi and the bhoga place; malefic in the 7th

When the pāka (the daśā rāśi) and the bhoga place are laden with malefics, there is bodily affliction and mental anguish. With a malefic in the seventh, distress to the wife is declared.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 13

Śloka 14 — Malefics in the 4th, 5th, 10th and 9th

(With a malefic) in the fourth there is loss of position; in the fifth, affliction to children; in the tenth, loss of reputation; and in the ninth, affliction to the father.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 14

Śloka 15 — Malefic in the 11th (rudra) from the pāka; benefics in the same houses

When a malefic has gone to the eleventh (rudra) from the pāka, affliction of every kind arises unobstructed. When benefics occupy the houses already named, one should accordingly pronounce comfort.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 15

Śloka 16 — Benefic in a kendra; judge also by natal and transit positions

When a benefic has gone to a kendra, there is gain that also confers victory over enemies. And by the positions of the grahas at the time of birth, and likewise from the transiting grahas —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 16

Śloka 17 — Weigh everything before pronouncing; rāśi occupied by or followed by benefics

— having weighed these, the daśā-fruit of each respective rāśi must certainly be pronounced. And whichever rāśi is occupied by benefics, or has benefic grahas behind it —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 17

Śloka 18 — Its daśā is good; benefics/malefics in the trikoṇa, 8th and 12th

— its daśā is declared to give good; in the opposite case, the reverse. By benefics and malefics placed in the trikoṇa, the eighth (randhra) and the twelfth (riṣpha), good and bad are respectively produced.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 18

Śloka 19 — The result is to be told as taught; bādhaka signs of the movable rāśis

In that daśā the result is to be told, and understood, exactly as has been stated. And for the rāśis Meṣa, Karka, Tulā and Makara (nakra), in order —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 19

Śloka 20 — Bādhaka-sthānas of the movable rāśis; malefic on the pāka-lord's sign or the bādhaka

— the bādhā-sthānas are, respectively, Kumbha, Vṛṣa (go), Siṃha and Vṛścika. And if in the rāśi occupied by the lord of the pāka, or in the bādhā-sthāna, a non-benefic —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 20

Śloka 21 — Malefic there gives grief and bondage; an exalted or own-sign graha there gives wealth

— is placed, there is great grief, calamity, imprisonment and diseases. But if in that (rāśi) there is a graha in its ucca or in its own ṛkṣa or house, there is good, comfort and the coming of wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 21

Śloka 22 — An empty daśā rāśi yields nothing

If that (rāśi — namely the one occupied by the pāka-lord, or the bādhā-sthāna named in v20–21) is empty of planets, there is discomfort; that rāśi's daśā yields no fruit.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 22

Śloka 23 — Rāhu in the bādhaka, 12th, 6th or 8th

When Rāhu is joined to the bādhaka, the twelfth, the sixth or the eighth (randhra), there is great fear; on setting out on a journey, the incurring of bondage, affliction from the king, and fear from an enemy.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 23

Śloka 24 — Sun, Mars, Rāhu, Saturn in the bhukti rāśi

If the Sun, Mars, Rāhu and Saturn are situated in the bhukti rāśi, then in the bhukti of that rāśi there is downfall, and great fear from the wrath of the king.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 24

Śloka 25 — Debilitated graha in a trikoṇa from, or joined to, the bhukti rāśi

If a graha in nīca is placed in a trikoṇa from the bhukti rāśi, or if a debilitated malefic joins that rāśi itself, there arises fear of death.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 25

Śloka 26 — Own-sign or exalted graha in the bhukti rāśi or its trikoṇa

When a graha standing in its own sign or exaltation is in the bhukti rāśi, or in a trikoṇa from it, then, when that bhukti-daśā arrives, the person indeed obtains happiness.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 26

Śloka 27 — Fruits of that favourable bhukti (continued)

(He obtains) lordship over a town or a village, the gain of sons, an inflow of wealth, welfare, abundant good fortune, the command of an army, and great advancement.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 27

Śloka 28 — Pāka-lord aspected by Jupiter and in an auspicious rāśi

If the lord of the pāka is aspected by Jupiter (jīva) and is placed in an auspicious rāśi, in its daśā there is acquisition of wealth and auspiciousness arising through a son.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 28

Śloka 29 — Enemy rāśis of the Sun and the Moon (start of the list)

The signs of Venus (sita) and of Saturn (asita), together with Mithuna (yugma), are the Sun's enemy rāśis. Vṛścika (kaurpi), Tulā and Kumbha (ghaṭa) are the Moon's; and the enemy rāśis of Mars (are next stated) —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 29

Śloka 30 — Enemy rāśis of Mars and of Mercury

— Kumbha (ghaṭa), Mīna, Mithuna (nṛ-yuk), Tulā and Kanyā. Next, for Mercury (jña), the rāśis Karka, Mīna, Vṛścika (ali) and Kumbha are held to be his enemies.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 30

Śloka 31 — Enemy rāśis of Jupiter and of Venus

The rāśis Vṛṣa, Tulā, Mithuna and Kanyā are Jupiter's enemies. Siṃha, Vṛścika (ali), Karka and Dhanus (cāpa) are Venus's enemy rāśis.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 31

Śloka 32 — Enemy rāśis of Saturn; instruction to apply this to antardaśā

Meṣa, Siṃha, Dhanus, Vṛścika (kaurpi) and Karka are Saturn's enemies. In this way let the learned dvija consider the antardaśā of the grahas.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 32

Śloka 33 — Rājayoga-giving grahas, grahas between benefics, benefics in 2/3/4

Those grahas which confer rājayoga, those which stand between benefics, and that rāśi from which good grahas occupy the second, third and fourth — these give good results.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 33

Śloka 34 — Rājayoga fruit; a malefic between two benefics turns benefic

In its daśā one should declare good, arising from rājayoga and the like. Even a malefic that has gone between two benefics is held to be a giver of good.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 34

Śloka 35 — A benefic's daśā falling within an auspicious daśā; benefic in the trikoṇa

A benefic's daśā that falls in the midst of an auspicious daśā is excellent. And that (rāśi) which has a benefic standing in its trikoṇa — its daśā too is a giver of good.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 35

Śloka 36 — Auspicious start and end of a daśā; divide each rāśi's period

If the beginning and the end (of a daśā) fall in friendly and benefic rāśis, the result is auspicious. Thus, for each rāśi in turn, one should apportion the years and so forth and pronounce the result.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 36

Śloka 37 — Benefic in the trikoṇa from the daśā's commencement

A benefic in a trikoṇa from the commencement brings good. In an auspicious rāśi, with an auspicious commencement, the daśā becomes exceedingly fine.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 37

Śloka 38 — Malefic in an auspiciously-begun rāśi; judge by the commencement

If a malefic falls in a rāśi whose opening is benefic, the daśā is nonetheless good at its commencement. When the commencement is auspicious — what need is there to say more? — one should assign the result according to the commencement.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 38

Śloka 39 — Malefic rāśi or weak/debilitated lord at the commencement

O Muni, if the commencement falls in a malefic's rāśi, or if its lord is powerless or is in debilitation and the like, one should assign a reversal of fortune at the beginning and at the end of that daśā.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 39

Śloka 40 — Rāśi connected with debilitated grahas (protasis)

That rāśi in which a debilitated graha is placed, or which has a debilitated one in its trikoṇa, or whose lord is himself in debilitation, or which has any connection with debilitated grahas —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 40

Śloka 41 — Its result — reversal of fortune, loss of wealth and crops, disease

— O best of the twice-born, it assuredly produces a reversal of fortune. There will be destruction of wealth, crops and the like, and fear of disease in the body as well.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 41

Śloka 42 — Own signs of Rāhu and Ketu

For Rāhu the set of four beginning with Kumbha, and for Ketu the set of four beginning with Vṛścika, are their own ṛkṣas. A daśā that commences there gives good in that daśā.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 42

Śloka 43 — A good-promising graha in a māraka; daśā ending aspected/joined

That in whose daśā one would declare good — if it is itself placed in a māraka position; or the rāśi in which the daśā terminates, if that be aspected by or joined with —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 43

Śloka 44 — Venus or Moon there gives loss of wealth from royal wrath; end in an enemy sign or with Rāhu

— Venus or the Moon, then there will be loss of wealth through the wrath of the king. And the same if the daśā ends in an enemy's kṣetra, or in one aspected by or joined with Rāhu.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 44

Śloka 45 — Exception — not applicable in Saturn's pāka or in Makara

O best of the twice-born, this result is not to be reckoned in Saturn's pāka; nor is this result to be reckoned when the daśā-giving rāśi is Makara (nakra).

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 45

Śloka 46 — End of Rāhu's daśā

At the close of Rāhu's daśā there is loss of all one's possessions, death or bondage, or banishment from the country; or else one meets with great suffering.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 46

Śloka 47 — Malefic in the trikoṇa from it; general instruction

If a malefic has gone to a trikoṇa from that, one should predict sorrow with certainty. In this way let the wise man declare all the good and the bad with assurance.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 47

Śloka 48 — When a rāśi occupied by Rāhu etc. becomes the daśā-giver

O Maitreya! If a rāśi occupied by Rāhu and the rest becomes the daśā-giver, then at that time too the foregoing must be considered with care.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 48

Śloka 49 — Daśā beginning or ending in a māraka; Rāhu there too

If the beginning or the end of a daśā falls in a māraka, it is not good. And if Rāhu is in that very place, there is confinement and destruction of property.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 49

Śloka 50 — Rāhu at the start of a daśā; Rāhu in the 2nd

When Rāhu is in whatever rāśi marks the commencement of a daśā, there is ruin; loss of the home is declared. Rāhu in the second (dhana) gives distress to wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 50

Śloka 51 — Moon and Venus in the 12th; Mars and Ketu there

If the Moon and Venus are in the twelfth, the king's wrath is certain. If Mars and Ketu are there, there is violent injury, or great suffering from fire.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 51

Śloka 52 — Moon and Venus in the 2nd give sovereignty

O Vipra! If the Moon and Venus are situated in the second (dhana), they confer sovereignty. This result pertaining to the second applies both at the daśā's beginning and at its end.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 52

Śloka 53 — Transition to argala; a graha in the śubha-argala

Thus has the result arising from the bhāvas together with their argala been declared by the good. Whichever (bhāva) has a graha, malefic or benefic, standing in its śubha-argala —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 53

Śloka 54 — The lagna aspected by that graha becomes strong; viparīta-argala

— the lagna aspected by that aspecting graha is rendered strong. But if a graha placed in the viparīta-argala should aspect it —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 54

Śloka 55 — Reversed result; benefic aspect gives good

— then in the daśā of that bhāva the result becomes reversed. When it is aspected by a benefic, declare good without any hesitation, O best of the twice-born.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 55

Śloka 56 — Bhāva connected with its benefic lord or an exalted graha

In whichever bhāva a connection with a benefic lord or with an exalted graha is seen, in the daśā of that bhāva there is incomparable acquisition of wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 56

Śloka 57 — Bhāva lord in or aspecting its own ṛkṣa

Whichever bhāva's lord occupies its own ṛkṣa, or else aspects it — in the daśā of that bhāva there is constant and great income of wealth.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 57

Śloka 58 — Lord in the 12th from a bhāva; malefics in its trikoṇas

Whichever lord is placed in the twelfth (riṣpha) from a bhāva — that bhāva's daśā gives loss of wealth. And from whichever bhāva malefics occupy the trikoṇas, there too an accumulation of inauspiciousness.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 58

Śloka 59 — Consequences; 12th/8th lords and Sun, Mars, Saturn in the trikoṇas

There will arise suffering for the father, loss of a son, and great mental anguish — namely, from whichever bhāva the lords of the twelfth (antya) and of the eighth (mṛti), or the Sun (ina), Mars (kuja) and Saturn (arkaja), occupy the trikoṇas.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 59

Śloka 60 — Rāhu and Ketu in the trikoṇas

When Rāhu and Ketu stand in the trikoṇas, there arise affliction to children, loss of wealth, wandering in foreign lands, hardship, and fear on every side.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 60

Śloka 61 — Malefics, debilitated or combust grahas in the 6th and 8th

From whichever bhāva malefics, or grahas that are debilitated or combust, occupy the sixth (ari) and eighth (mṛti) — from that comes fear on account of the king, of enemies and of disease, declared to be unbearable.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 61

Śloka 62 — Malefic in the 4th from a bhāva; Mars there

From whichever bhāva a malefic has gone to the fourth, there is destruction of land, fields, houses and cattle; and if Mars is there, the house is consumed by fire.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 62

Śloka 63 — Saturn, Sun or Rāhu in that fourth

If it be Saturn (arkaja), there is piercing pain in the heart; if the Sun, the wrath of the king arises; if Rāhu, there is loss of all one's possessions, and fear born of thieves, poison and the like.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 63

Śloka 64 — Rāhu in the 10th; benefics in the 10th, 11th and 9th

From whichever bhāva Rāhu has gone to the tenth (karma), that bhāva's daśā yields merit and pilgrimage. And from whichever bhāva benefic grahas occupy the tenth (karma), the eleventh (lābha) and the ninth (tapas) —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 64

Śloka 65 — Their fruit; exalted benefics in the 5th, 7th and 6th

— (that daśā) gives sound learning, wealth, meritorious deeds, fame, dharma and the aims of human life. And from whichever bhāva benefic grahas standing in their own exaltation occupy the fifth (suta), the seventh and the sixth (śatru) —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 65

Śloka 66 — Their fruit; conjunction of the lords of 1, 4, trikoṇa, 11 and 10

— (there is) genuine happiness from wife, children and the rest, and the highest honour from the king. And where the lords of the lagna (tanu), of the fourth (ambu), of the trikoṇa, of the eleventh (āya) and of the tenth (rājya) are joined together —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 66

Śloka 67 — Increase of those bhāvas; Jupiter, Venus or a trikoṇa lord

— then there is increase of each of those respective bhāvas, resting upon the strength of that yoga. And wherever Jupiter (ijya), or Venus (bhārgava), or the lord of a trikoṇa is placed —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 67

Śloka 68 — Their fruit; exalted grahas or a trikoṇa lord in the 4th

— there is auspiciousness, wealth and possessions of many kinds, and the worship of the gods and of the brāhmaṇas (the earth-gods). And from whichever bhāva grahas standing in their own exaltation, or the lord of a trikoṇa, occupy the fourth (turya) —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 68

Śloka 69 — Their fruit; the Moon in that fourth

— there is the acquisition of a village and of vehicles, and wealth in cattle as well. If the Moon is there, gain arises from abundant grain and its produce.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 69

Śloka 70 — Full Moon there; Venus there

With a full Moon there, there is the gain of buried treasure and of gems, jewels and the like. If Venus is there, there is the pleasure of drums, instrumental music and song.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 70

Śloka 71 — Jupiter in the 4th; lords of 1, 9 and 10, or exalted benefics

If Jupiter is in the fourth, there is the acquisition of golden palanquins and the like. And where the lords of the lagna, of the ninth (tapas) and of the tenth (rājya), or good grahas placed in exaltation, are found —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 71

Śloka 72 — Their fruit; closing instruction on bhāva-daśā judgement

— there is success in every undertaking, and prosperity of the royal bhāva. In this manner, only after due discrimination, should one declare the daśā-fruit of each respective bhāva.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 72

Śloka 73 — Each rāśi-and-graha daśā yields results according to its eighteen states

Each individual ṛkṣa-and-graha daśā yields results of many kinds according to its own qualities, which are eighteen (dhṛti) in number. Such, O Dvija, is the view of the good.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 73

Śloka 74 — The eighteen states, part 1 — exaltation and own signs

In ucca, in paramocca, or in the degree before it or after it; or in the mūlatrikoṇa rāśi, in its own rāśi, in the sign of a great friend (adhimitra) —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 74

Śloka 75 — The eighteen states, part 2 — friends, neutrals, enemies, debilitation

— in the rāśi of a temporary friend, and likewise in the rāśi of a neutral or of an enemy; in the house of a great enemy (adhiśatru); in nīca; in the region above the point of debilitation —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 75

Śloka 76 — The eighteen states, part 3 — vargas, kendra and koṇa

— also below the point of debilitation; in the paramāṃśa of debilitation; in its own varga; in a debilitation-varga and in an enemy's varga; in a sign accompanied by a cruel graha; in a koṇa or a kendra sign —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 76

Śloka 77 — The eighteen states, part 4 — planetary war and combustion; the governing principle

— and of one so placed, and of one defeated in planetary war, and of one gone to combustion: the daśā-pāka result of the graha follows its own inherent qualities.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 77

Śloka 78 — A graha in ati-tuṅga or below it yet very strong

Whichever graha has gone to ati-tuṅga (past its exact exaltation point), or is below it yet endowed with exceeding strength — its daśā is called Sampūrṇā, and confers kingdom, enjoyment and happiness.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 78

Śloka 79 — pūrṇā daśā — exalted and strong graha

In that [sampūrṇā daśā] there is the sport of Lakṣmī and a rise in every kind of lordship. Next, the daśā of a graha placed in ucca and possessed of strength is held to bear the name 'pūrṇā' (full).

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 79

Śloka 80 — pūrṇā gives lordship but also grave disease; setup for riktā

It gives supreme lordship, but it also gives grave disease. Of a sky-goer (graha) standing in the sign of its extreme debilitation and devoid of strength —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 80

Śloka 81 — riktā daśā; avarohiṇī daśā

— the daśā is 'riktā' (empty), giving inauspicious results, disease, loss of wealth and death. But of a graha standing midway between the deepest exaltation and the debilitation, [the daśā is] 'avarohiṇī' (descending).

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 81

Śloka 82 — madhyamā daśā; ārohiṇī daśā

Of a graha placed in a friend's sign or in an exaltation sign, the daśā is 'madhyamā' (middling) and gives wealth. Of one placed in the interval between debilitation and exaltation, the daśā is 'ārohiṇī' (ascending).

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 82

Śloka 83 — adhamā daśā — debilitated or enemy navāṃśa

But of a graha standing in the navāṃśa of its debilitation or of an enemy, the daśā is 'adhamā' (lowest), bestowing manifold dangers, affliction, distress and much terror.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 83

Śloka 84 — the named daśās deliver per their names; Jupiter–9th-lord sambandha

The daśās just named give, in their own ripening, results matching their names. A relation (sambandha) of Jupiter with the lord of the ninth — one arising from conjunction, from aspect, from mutual kendra position, or from sharing a house —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 84

Śloka 85 — the Jupiter–9th-lord relation aids even another graha's daśā; the bhāgya-increasing graha

— becomes an augmenter of good fortune even during the daśā of some other graha. But that sky-goer (graha) which stands at birth as a producer of increase of fortune —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 85

Śloka 86 — retrograde grahas give full result only when direct; sambandha and yoga empower weak grahas

— gives its full result only after abandoning retrogression. In just this way the wise have declared that grahas otherwise incapable [of giving results] become result-giving through relation (sambandha) and through yoga.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 86

Śloka 87 — kendra / paṇaphara / āpoklima grading of daśā results — full, half, quarter

And the daśā of these [grahas], when they occupy a kendra and the rest, is declared by the wise to be result-giving in full, by half, and by a quarter respectively.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 87

Śloka 88 — śīrṣodaya and ubhayodaya signs — when in the daśā the result falls

Grahas standing in śīrṣodaya (head-rising) rāśis give their results at the beginning of their own dāya (daśā); those occupying ubhayodaya (both-ways-rising) rāśis give results in the middle of the daśā.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 88

Śloka 89 — pṛṣṭhodaya signs; friendly antardaśās give good results

And those occupying pṛṣṭhodaya (back-rising) signs are fruitful at the close of the daśā. In the bhukti of natural and of temporal friends one should declare good results.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 89

Śloka 90 — hostile antardaśās give bad results; the twelve rāśi antardaśās counted from the daśā-lord's sign

For those otherwise situated (i.e. natural or temporal enemies), bad results are declared. From the rāśi occupied by the daśā-lord onward, as far as the twelve rāśis —

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 90

Śloka 91 — rāśi-antardaśā order; own-lord or friendly-lord rāśi gives good results

— the bhukti of the rāśis within the daśā is to be known in order by the learned. Among them, whichever rāśi is occupied by its own lord or by a friend, in that one the result is auspicious.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 91

Śloka 92 — trika-placed or afflicted antardaśā rāśi — loss, quarrel, death, disease

[A rāśi] standing in a trika — counted, like the rest of this sequence, from the rāśi occupied by the daśā-lord (v90) — or joined with a malefic or with a graha placed in its debilitation or enemy rāśi: in that one, loss of wealth, quarrel, death, disease and fears are declared.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 92

Śloka 93 — aṣṭakavarga bindus grade the growth or decline of that rāśi/bhāva

Increase and decline for that rāśi and bhāva are declared, respectively, according to abundance or emptiness of bindus in its own aṣṭakavarga.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 93

Śloka 94 — reckoning the twelve bhāvas afresh from the rāśi in each bhāva (bhāva-lagna technique)

By reckoning tanu (the first) and the rest of the bhāvas from the rāśi standing in each several bhāva, one should declare the auspicious and inauspicious results of the native's sons and the rest.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 94

Śloka 95 — dhātu-mūla-jīva significations wax and wane by benefic/malefic daśā

And those dhātu (mineral) and the rest that were declared for the rāśis and the grahas — their accumulation and diminution are to be known according as the daśā is of a benefic or of a malefic.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 95

Śloka 96 — summary rule for reading every graha's bhukti

From association with benefic, malefic and hostile [grahas], and from conjunction with good and bad grahas — in this way one should declare the bhukti-result of each and every graha in its own turn.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 96

Śloka 97 — closing instruction — extend the method to antardaśā and beyond within each rāśi

Thus, having reckoned within each rāśi the antardaśās of the [twelve] rāśis and so forth, the learned should declare the native's results in particular detail.

BPHS Adhyāya 51, śloka 97
