The Chapter on Computing the Antardaśā — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 52
The complete The Chapter on Computing the Antardaśā chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 12 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — General formula for antardaśā length in Viṃśottarī-type (fixed-total) daśā systems
The [mahā]daśā, multiplied by the daśā-years [of the graha whose sub-period is wanted] and divided by the full life-span (paramāyus), gives a quotient in years and so on; that the knowing ones should understand as the antardaśā thus produced.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Order of the antardaśās and of the pratyantaradaśās
The first antardaśā is that of the daśā-lord himself; thereafter come those of the others in [their proper] order. Within the pratyantaradaśā too, exactly this same sequence is held [to apply].
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Antardaśā of grahas within the Chara and similar rāśi-daśās
The daśā divided by nine gives the bhukti, equal for [each of] the sky-goers. First comes the antardaśā of the daśā-lord; after that, of those that stand in the kendras and so on [in turn].
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Pratyantara in the same scheme; judgement by strength
And the pratyantaradaśā and the rest are to be known by the wise in this same order. The learned one should declare the result by discriminating strength and weakness.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Antardaśā of the rāśis in rāśi-daśās
The periods of enjoyment measured by the rāśi's allotted dāya are the twelve equal bhuktis; and from the antardaśās of the signs the pratyantara and the rest are to be known.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — Starting point and direction of counting the rāśi antardaśās
Of the rāśi that bears the daśā and the seventh from it, [one starts] from the stronger; and thus the wise one should count in direct order if [that sign] is odd, but in reverse order if it is even.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Special counting rule — movable vs. fixed daśā-rāśi
Now I shall state something further, a special point; hear it, O twice-born one. In a movable sign the procedure is as stated before; but in a fixed sign the signs taken sixth after sixth are prescribed.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 7
Śloka 8-9 — Dual signs; odd/even direction; definition of the pāka-rāśi
When [the daśā-rāśi] is a dual sign, [the reckoning proceeds] by the kendras of the lagna, of the fifth and of the ninth. Among movable, fixed and dual signs, when they are odd, [count] in direct order, O Muni; but in the even ones among those very [signs] it is to be known in reverse order — so it is agreed. In this way the rāśi that bears the daśā is called the pāka-rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 8-9
Śloka 10-11 — Definition of the bhoga-rāśi across successive cycles (paryāya)
In the first cycle the wise have declared that very [pāka-rāśi] to be the bhoga-rāśi as well. Here, by however much the pāka is distant from the first [cycle's pāka], by that same measure onward [from the pāka] should the knowing one reckon the bhoga there — in the daśās named chara, sthira and trikoṇa, O best of the twice-born.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 10-11
Śloka 12 — Judging pāka and bhoga; malefic association
Thus should the wise reckon the pāka and the bhoga with particular care. When the pāka and the bhoga are attended by malefics, they give mental anguish and bodily disease.
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 12
Śloka 13-14 — Antardaśā in the Naisargika, Piṇḍa and Aṃśa daśās — the pācaka shares
Among the Naisarga, Piṇḍa and Aṃśa daśās I now state the rule for the bhukti. The daśā-lord yields a full [share]; the graha joined with him yields half of that; one placed in a koṇa a third part; one placed in the vāhana or the randhra a fourth part; and one placed in the mada a seventh part. Where several [stand in one such place], the one endowed with strength [yields it].
BPHS Adhyāya 52, śloka 13-14
Śloka 15-16 — Reducing the pācaka shares to multipliers and computing the antardaśā
The grahas so placed, together with the lagna, are the 'cookers' (pācaka) there. Their fractional shares, brought to a common denominator and then freed of the denominator, [give the multipliers] from those shares. The daśā-years, multiplied [by these] and divided by the sum of the parts, then produce the antardaśā; and from that, the pratyantara and the rest.
