The Chapter on Aṣṭakavarga — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 66
The complete The Chapter on Aṣṭakavarga chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 61 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka colophon — Closing colophon of the Aṣṭakavarga chapter
Thus, in the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, the chapter on the Aṣṭakavarga is concluded.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka colophon
Śloka 1-3 — Maitreya's question — a śāstra simple enough for the dull-witted of Kali-yuga
Maitreya said: Reverend one! You have declared it all — what is approved by many teachers, the fruit produced by the grahas, the bhāvas and the rest. But because their motions are intermixed [and so their results are blended], the settling of the grahas and of their fruits is exceedingly hard to accomplish — especially in Kali[-yuga], for people of little learning and of sinful conduct. Therefore tell me, from your own mouth, that śāstra which one of small intellect can grasp, by which the course of worldly life may be fully known and the span of life determined.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 1-3
Śloka 4 — Parāśara's assent
Parāśara said: Well asked by you, O brahman! I shall tell you the whole of it, for the benefit of the people. Listen, you, with close attention.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 4
Śloka 5-6 — The general rule already taught: bhāva results from benefic/malefic association and dignity
The bhāvas, from the lagna up to the twelfth (vyaya), give their fruits in accordance with their own designations; aspected by benefics, or joined with good [grahas], they are exceedingly auspicious — and the more so when those grahas stand in their own exaltation, own sign and the like. But bhāvas aspected by or conjoined with malefics that are themselves placed in debilitation or in an enemy's sign become givers of the other than welfare. [Thus the two limbs together: givers of welfare and of its opposite, respectively.]
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 5-6
Śloka 7 — Colophon on the preceding: this is the general teaching, following the earlier ācāryas
Thus has it been stated in general terms by the learned who know horā; and all this has been declared by me too, following the earlier ācāryas.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 7
Śloka 8-9 — Even Vasiṣṭha or Bṛhaspati cannot settle longevity — how much less ordinary men in Kali
O twice-born one! To determine with certainty the life-span, the course of worldly life, and even the very purpose of this śāstra — not even Vasiṣṭha or Bṛhaspati is able; what then of men of dull intellect? Especially in Kali-yuga this settling is not an easy thing.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 8-9
Śloka 10 — Horāśāstra is twofold: the general portion and the decisive portion
Horāśāstra is declared to be twofold: the general and the decisive. The general portion has been fully stated; now the decisive portion is told.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 10
Śloka 11-13 — The two marks — karaṇa (bindu) and sthāna (rekhā) — and the eightfold reckoning from Sun through lagna
Having first understood the karaṇa and the sthāna — which take the form of a dot and a line respectively — the discerning should in this way know the fruit of the aṣṭakavarga. Just as the auspicious and inauspicious fruit arising from the twelve bhāvas has been declared from the lagna (tanu), or likewise from the Moon, so should it be considered from the others as well. From the eight — the Sun and the rest together with the lagna — the inauspicious or auspicious [result] arising in every bhāva is to be known, thus, in due order.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 11-13
Śloka 14 — Definition: karaṇa = bindu (bad), sthāna = rekhā (good)
The karaṇa is declared to be of the form of a dot (bindu); the sthāna, likewise, is called a line (rekhā). The wise should know the sthāna as the giver of good fruit and the karaṇa as the giver of bad.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Drawing the aṣṭakavarga diagram: 14 north–south lines and 10 east–west lines
Lines running south-to-north to the number of Śakra (fourteen), and ten running east-to-west — one should draw them; thus [arises] a diagram containing a great many cells.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 15
Śloka 16-17 — Filling the diagram: bhāvas across the top row, the eight (7 grahas + lagna) down the side
In the first row of east–west cells one should set down the bhāvas; and across, in eight [cells], one should write out the grahas together with the lagna. There, having recognised — as has been stated — the sthāna that gives the auspicious or the karaṇa that gives the inauspicious, the knowing one should thereupon declare the fruit.
BPHS Adhyāya 66, śloka 16-17
Śloka 18 — Sun's aṣṭakavarga — number of bindus (karaṇas) per bhāva from the Sun
