The Chapter on Trikoṇa Reduction (Trikoṇaśodhana) — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 67

The complete The Chapter on Trikoṇa Reduction (Trikoṇaśodhana) chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 5 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.

Śloka 1 — Order of operations — build the aṣṭakavarga, then reduce by trikoṇa

In this manner, having constructed the aṣṭakavarga of the lagna and of the grahas, one should first carry out the trikoṇa-reduction in all the rāśis.

BPHS Adhyāya 67, śloka 1

Śloka 2 — Definition of the four trikoṇa groups (part 1 of 2)

O twice-born one! Cāpa (Dhanus), Siṃha and Meṣa are declared to be a trikoṇa; and likewise Vṛṣa, Kanyā and Mṛgāsya (Makara); and also Kumbha, Mithuna and Tulā.

BPHS Adhyāya 67, śloka 2

Śloka 3 — Fourth trikoṇa group; write the aṣṭakavarga totals beneath the rāśis

And Karka, Vṛścika and Mīna are mutually trikoṇa. Beneath all the rāśis one should write the figure produced from the aṣṭaka(varga).

BPHS Adhyāya 67, śloka 3

Śloka 4 — The reduction rule; the zero exception

Whatever is the least among the trikoṇa (rāśis), an amount equal to that should be subtracted in all three. If in any one of the bhāvas there is zero, that trikoṇa should not be reduced.

BPHS Adhyāya 67, śloka 4

Śloka 5 — All-equal case; hand-off to ekādhipatya-śodhana

When there is equality in all the houses (of the trikoṇa), the one who knows should subtract the whole of it. Thereafter the wise should carry out the reduction for ekādhipatya (single lordship).
