The Chapter on Ekādhipatya-śodhana (Reduction for Single Lordship) — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 68
The complete The Chapter on Ekādhipatya-śodhana (Reduction for Single Lordship) chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 6 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Order of operations: trikoṇa-śodhana first, then ekādhipatya-śodhana
Having in this way purified (reduced) the trikoṇa, the wise man should write down the resulting figure (phala) of the rāśis; thereafter, O twice-born one (Maitreya), he should carry out the purification that arises from [single] lordship.
BPHS Adhyāya 68, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Both kṣetras of one lord carry a value; both graha-less — subtract the smaller
Only when there are figures (phala) in both kṣetras [owned by one lord] should the intelligent man purify in this manner: in the other [rāśi], which is devoid of a graha, he should reduce it by the smaller [of the two figures].
BPHS Adhyāya 68, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Both rāśis occupied by grahas — no reduction; setting up the mixed case
When both [rāśis] are joined with grahas, no reduction whatsoever is ever to be made. When the one joined with a graha is deficient in figures and the one lacking a graha has the greater figure —
BPHS Adhyāya 68, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Mixed case: which of the two signs loses its value
— he should reduce in that other [rāśi], the one devoid of a graha, by the lesser [figure]. But when the [rāśi] having the greater figure is joined with grahas, then in the other [the graha-less one] he should discard the whole [figure].
BPHS Adhyāya 68, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Equality cases: both empty and equal; one occupied, one empty, equal
When both are devoid of grahas and the figures are equal, he should discard [both figures]. When one has a graha and the other has none and [their figures] are equal, the whole [figure] is to be reduced away in the graha-less one.
BPHS Adhyāya 68, śloka 5
Śloka 6 (first half-line only, unnumbered) — Karka and Siṃha are exempt — each has its own sole lord
Of the two rāśis Kuḷīra (Karka) and Siṃha, the kṣetra is separate and the figure is separate.
