Chapter on the Results of the Aṣṭakavarga — Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra, Adhyāya 70
The complete Chapter on the Results of the Aṣṭakavarga chapter of the Bṛhat-Pārāśara-Horāśāstra — all 44 verses, each in the original Sanskrit with VedicSpace's clean-room English translation, cited by śloka. Translated from the Chaukhamba (Devachandra Jha) edition and audited against the printed plates.
Śloka 1 — Invocation; what the Sun's aṣṭakavarga signifies
O brāhmaṇa (Maitreya)! With a collected mind, hear the results of the aṣṭakavarga. The self, one's own nature and strength, and all deliberation concerning the father — these are the results (read) from the Sun.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 1
Śloka 2 — Significations of the Moon's and Mars's aṣṭakavarga
Mind, and the clarity (serenity) of the intellect, and all deliberation concerning the mother — from the Moon. But the brother's inner strength, (his) qualities, and land should be considered by means of Mars.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 2
Śloka 3 — Significations of Mercury's and Jupiter's aṣṭakavarga
Trade, occupation and means of livelihood, and also friends — by Mercury. By Jupiter, bodily nourishment, and intellect, sons, and abundance of wealth.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 3
Śloka 4 — Significations of Venus's aṣṭakavarga
From Bhṛgu (Venus): the rites of marriage, the place of enjoyment, and the vehicle. Association with courtesans and with womenfolk should also be examined through Venus.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 4
Śloka 5 — Significations of Saturn's aṣṭakavarga
Longevity and the means of subsistence, pain and grief, great fear, the loss of everything, and death — all these should be examined by Manda (Saturn) alone.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 5
Śloka 6 — General method: yogapiṇḍa × bhāva rekhās ÷ 27 → nakṣatra of decline
One should multiply the yogapiṇḍa by the rekhās (the result-lines) of the bhāva in question, and divide by twenty-seven. When Ravi's son (Saturn) has arrived at the nakṣatra (counted off) by the remainder —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 6
Śloka 7 — Completion of the rule; the father's house defined from the Sun
— one should certainly declare a diminution in the result produced by that bhāva. The rāśi measured off by aṅka (nine) from the Sun's rāśi is declared to be the house of the father.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 7
Śloka 8 — Father's affliction: piṇḍa × father-house rekhās ÷ 27
The piṇḍa multiplied by the number of rekhās in that (father's) house, and divided by the number of the nakṣatras (twenty-seven) — when Ravi's son (Saturn) has gone to the nakṣatra measured by the remainder —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 8
Śloka 9 — Father's affliction or death, including the trine nakṣatras
— then without doubt, O chief of brāhmaṇas (Maitreya), one should declare affliction to the father. Or when (Saturn) has gone to the trine (nakṣatras) of that one, the father, or one who is equal to a father —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 9
Śloka 10 — Completion; alternate method — piṇḍa × father-house rekhās
— one should know his death, or else an excess of affliction. When the piṇḍa has been taken (multiplied) by the rekhās belonging to the aṣṭakavarga of the father's house —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 10
Śloka 11 — Alternate method: ÷ 12 → rāśi of the father's affliction
— and when it has been divided by twelve, then when Ravi's son (Saturn) has gone to the rāśi of the remainder, or when he has gone to the trine house of that one, one should declare affliction to the father.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 11
Śloka 12 — Death in an ariṣṭa daśā; Rāhu/Saturn/Mars in the 4th from the Sun
At the time of a daśā that gives ariṣṭa (misfortune), death itself (results) — there is no doubt. But when Rāhu, or Manda (Saturn), or the son of the earth (Mars) is in the fourth from the Sun, and it is without (ṛte) the aspect of Jupiter and Venus, the man is born pitṛhā — the printed word literally means "slayer of the father", but Jha glosses it as पितृहीन, i.e. he is deprived of his father (the father is lost).
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 12
Śloka 13 — Pitṛhā yoga; Saturn in the 9th from lagna or Moon
— then, in the absence of the aspect of Jupiter and Venus, the man is born a slayer of his father. Likewise, when the Sun's son (Saturn) has gone to the guru-sthāna (the ninth) from the lagna or from the Moon —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 13
Śloka 14 — Father's death by pāpa association/aspect and the 4th-lord's daśā
— and (that Saturn) is aspected by or conjoined with malefic grahas, one should declare the death of the father: (that death) occurs in the ariṣṭa-giving daśā of the lord of the sukha-bhāva (the fourth) reckoned from the lagna.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 14
Śloka 15 — Pitṛnidhana yoga — the son who performs the father's rites
He who is born (with his lagna) in the eighth from the father's birth-lagna, or (in whose lagna) the lord of that (eighth) is placed — he alone performs the rites due to the father, O best of the twice-born (Maitreya)!
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 15
Śloka 16 — Pitṛsukha yoga — the obedient son
When the lord of the sukha-bhāva (fourth) is placed in the lābha (eleventh) or in the lagna — and especially so reckoned from the Moon — or else when it has gone to the father's house (the tenth), the native is obedient to the father's will.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 16
Śloka 17 — Birth in the 3rd or 10th from the father's lagna
One born in the third rāśi from the father's birth (lagna) lives dependent on the father's wealth. One born in the father's karma-house (the tenth) is endowed with qualities equal to the father's.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 17
Śloka 18 — Surpassing the father; the general-results caveat
And when the lord of that (tenth) is situated in the lagna, the person becomes superior to his father. Here too the wise one should weigh up all the general results.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 18
Śloka 19 — Śūnya rāśi in the Sun's aṣṭakavarga — inauspicious month/year
Whichever (rāśi) is empty (of rekhās) in the Sun's aṣṭakavarga — in that month, or in that year, marriage, the binding of vows (upanayana and the like), and other auspicious undertakings are censured by the wise.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 19
Śloka 20 — Rekhā-rich rāśi — the auspicious month/year even under bad Sun or Jupiter
And likewise, O best of the twice-born (Maitreya), in the month or the year of a rāśi rich in rekhās, that (auspicious undertaking) is indeed enjoined — even should the Sun or Jupiter be a giver of bad results.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 20
Śloka 21 — Śūnya rāśi in the Moon's aṣṭakavarga
In the same way, in the Moon's aṣṭaka (aṣṭakavarga), in whichever rāśi there is emptiness — most particularly (there) — when the Moon is going through that rāśi one should on no account perform an auspicious act.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 21
Śloka 22 — Mother, mansion, village from the 4th from the Moon; the piṇḍa computation
From the fourth from the Moon is the deliberation about the mother, the mansion, and the village. One should multiply the piṇḍa by the result (rekhās) of the sukha-bhāva reckoned from the Moon, and divide by the nakṣatras (twenty-seven).
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 22
Śloka 23 — Mother's death or distress from the remainder nakṣatra/rāśi
When the Sun's son (Saturn) has gone to that remainder-nakṣatra, or to its trine nakṣatra, one should declare the death of the mother, or her distress; and likewise also when he is in the rāśi of the remainder after division by arka (twelve) — or in its trine rāśi.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 23
Śloka 24 — Mars's aṣṭakavarga — brothers; the brother's house
In the aṣṭakavarga of Bhauma (Mars) are to be considered the brother, (his) valour, and (his) fortitude. The rāśi that is the third (sahaja) from the rāśi occupied by Mars is held to be the house of the brother.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 24
Śloka 25 — Mars transiting the rāśi of high śodhita phala
In whichever rāśi, after the trikoṇa reduction has been performed, the result is abundant — when Kuja (Mars) goes there, there is wondrous happiness from land, from women, and from brothers.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 25
Śloka 26 — Weak Mars gives a long-lived brother; Mars in the depleted rāśi
If Bhauma (Mars) is devoid of strength, the brother becomes long-lived. Where the results are depleted (nil), when Āra (Mars) is there one should declare distress.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 26
Śloka 27 — Brother's distress: piṇḍa × 3rd-from-Mars rekhās ÷ 27 or ÷ 12
One should multiply the piṇḍa by the rekhās of the third rāśi from Kuja (Mars), and divide — by the nakṣatras (twenty-seven), and likewise by the arkas (twelve). When Ravi's son (Saturn) has come to the remainder-rāśi (or nakṣatra), or else —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 27
Śloka 28 — Completion — the trine positions too
— when he has gone to the trine of that, the wise one should plainly declare distress to the brother.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 28
Śloka 29 — Mercury's aṣṭakavarga — family, friends, maternal uncle
In the fourth from Mercury, and in the family (matters), one should consider the friend and the maternal uncle. When Jña (Mercury) has gone to a house rich in rekhās, there is excellent happiness for them.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 29
Śloka 30 — Distress to uncle/friends/family via the reduced Mercury aṣṭakavarga
Having performed the reduction of Mercury's aṣṭakavarga, when Śani has gone to the remainder-nakṣatra, then one should pronounce distress to the maternal uncle, to good friends, and to the family.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 30
Śloka 31 — Jupiter's aṣṭakavarga — knowledge, sons, dharma
From the fifth from Jīva (Jupiter) is the deliberation about knowledge, sons, dharma and the rest. Where the result is greater, there is to be known happiness arising from sons and so forth.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 31
Śloka 32 — Number of children from the rekhās of the 5th from Jupiter
Whatever be the measure of the rekhās in the fifth house from Guru (Jupiter), of that same measure is the progeny — provided Jupiter is not in an enemy's house or in his nīca house.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 32
Śloka 33 — Alternative count from the 5th-lord's navāṃśa; the piṇḍa computation
Or else that (progeny) is held to be equal to the navāṃśas of the lord of the fifth. Having multiplied the piṇḍa by the rekhās of the fifth place, and (divided) likewise by the nakṣatras (twenty-seven) —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 33
Śloka 34 — Saturn's transit of the remainder rāśi harms children, learning, dharma
— and one should (also) divide by the ravis (twelve). Śani, gone to the rāśi of the remainder, is a giver of pain to the children; in the same way, gone to that nakṣatra, he is also a causer of loss to learning and to dharma.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 34
Śloka 35 — Venus's aṣṭakavarga cast into the rāśis
And having deposited Venus's aṣṭakavarga in the sky-coursing (rāśis) — in whichever rāśi the results are abundant, there indeed —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 35
Śloka 36 — Land, wealth, wife; the wife from the 7th from Venus
— the wise one should declare land, wealth, and a wife, in the direction belonging to each such (rāśi). From the jñāmitra (the seventh) from Venus, the obtaining of a wife is to be known by the best of the learned.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 36
Śloka 37 — Direction/country of the wife; her distress by the piṇḍa method
And (the wife is obtained) in the direction and in the country of that (seventh) house, or of its trine houses. By the multiplication of the piṇḍa, her distress is to be known just as before.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 37
Śloka 38 — Saturn's aṣṭakavarga — the death-rāśi and longevity
The eighth from the place occupied by Śanaiścara (Saturn) is held to be the rāśi of death. That is also the house of longevity; therefore longevity should be considered from it by the wise.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 38
Śloka 39 — Summing the rekhās from lagna to Saturn → year of illness and enmity
Beginning from the lagna and ending with Manda (Saturn), one should add the results together in one place. In the year equal to that sum of results, one should declare disease and enmity.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 39
Śloka 40 — The reverse sum, from Saturn to lagna
In the same way one should bring together in one place the results beginning with Manda (Saturn) and ending with the lagna. In the year equal to this sum, one should declare illness for the native.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 40
Śloka 41 — When both sums agree — distress equal to death
But in the year equal to both sums (alike), the affliction becomes equal to death. If in that (year) there is also the conjunction of an ariṣṭa daśā, one should declare death without doubt.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 41
Śloka 42 — Piṇḍa multiplied by the rekhās of the 8th from Saturn, divided by 27 — the nakṣatra of death
One should multiply the piṇḍa by the phalas (rekhās) standing in the eighth rāśi from Manda (Saturn). As before, one should divide by twenty-seven; when [Saturn] arrives at the nakṣatra [indicated by] the remainder —
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 42
Śloka 43 — Death also in the trine nakṣatras, and by the parallel division by twelve for the rāśi and its trines
— or else, when Manda (Saturn) has gone to a trine nakṣatra of that [remainder-nakṣatra], death occurs. In the same way, in the sign obtained when [the product] is cut down by the Suns (i.e. divided by twelve), and likewise in its trines, death occurs when [Saturn] has gone there.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 43
Śloka 44 — General rule — Saturn transiting rekhā-poor versus rekhā-rich rāśis
When Manda (Saturn) goes to a house devoid of phalas (rekhās), there is no auspiciousness whatsoever. When he goes to one having abundant phalas, one should assuredly declare an auspicious result.
BPHS Adhyāya 70, śloka 44
