Śloka 1 — Opening; āyurdāya from aṣṭakavarga — value of 0 and 1 rekhā

अथायुरष्टवर्गोत्थं वच्मि ते शृणु तन्मुने । रेखाभावे दिनं युग्मं सार्धैकं रेखया स्मृतम् ॥ १ ॥

Now I shall tell you the longevity that arises from the aṣṭakavarga; listen to it, O sage [Maitreya]. When there is no rekhā [in a rāśi], two days [are assigned]; with one rekhā, one and a half [days] are declared.

Śloka 2 — Values for 2, 3 and 4 rekhās

रेखाभ्यां दिनमेकं तु दिनार्धं तिसृभिर्मतम् । अह्नां सप्त दिनार्धं च वेदरेखाभिरादिशेत् ॥ २ ॥

With two rekhās, one day; with three, half a day is held [to be the measure]. With four rekhās (veda-rekhā) one should declare seven days and half a day [i.e. seven and a half days].

Śloka 3 — Values for 5, 6, 7 and 8 rekhās

पञ्चभिर्युग्मवर्षं च षड्भिरब्दचतुष्टयम् । सप्तभी रसवर्षं चाष्टाभिरष्टाब्दकं स्मृतम् ॥ ३ ॥

With five [rekhās], two years; with six, a set of four years; with seven, six years; and with eight, eight years are declared.

Śloka 4 — Summation over all grahas and halving to get the true aṣṭakavarga āyus

इत्थं समस्तग्रहजं मुने ! यच्चायुरागतम् । तस्यार्धं विदितं स्पष्टमायुरष्टकवर्गजम् ॥ ४ ॥

O sage [Maitreya]! Whatever longevity is thus obtained from all the grahas together — half of that is known to be the exact (spaṣṭa) longevity arising from the aṣṭakavarga.
